A Quantitative Study of Quality of Experience (QoE) for Decreasing and Increasing Network Performance.Dhungana, Ramesh, Shahi, Deepak January 2011 (has links)
Currently, user satisfaction is becoming one of the major concerns for the service provider in accommodating user demand. This paper evaluates the user’s perception (Quality of Experience, QoE) of the increasing and decreasing response times (Quality of Service, QoS), in particular a login to web login page by the implementation of Mean Opinion Score (MOS). By comparing the results to user perception of web login performance, we show that the users perceive web login for increasing and decreasing RTs in different ways. So, we conduct interview among specific users applying increased and decreased RTs in particular web login to rank the users satisfaction level. Study of the two results for RTs of the web login page is presented.

Quality of Service is a measure of the performance of a particular service. Quality of Experience is a subjective measure of user’s perception of the overall performance of network. The high demand for internet usage in everyday life has got people concerned about security of information over web pages that require authentication. User perceived Quality of Security Experience depends on Quality of Experience and Response Time for web page authentication. Different factors such as jitter, packet loss, delay, network speed, supply chains and the type of security algorithm play a vital role in the response time for authentication. Internet has dominated the modern communication and information exchange and it is growing enormously day by day. Initially it is designed to off?er various applications like World Wide Web (WWW), Electronic Mail (E-Mail) and File Transfer (FTP). WWW has become very popular and today, Web traffic constitutes 70-80% in global Internet traffic. Web traffic generates by the end users, when they request for a web page. The web page transfers between various Web servers via different service networks to the end users. Web traffic has become very significant in the present world and the service providers have to offer best service to the customers. Quality of Service (QoS) is a measure of describing the performance of the service. Quality of Experience (QoE) explains the user perceived performance and it is subjective in nature. QoE influences the user satisfaction level, so QoS has to ensure to promote better QoE. User perceived QoE depends on page download time and it is an important parameter in evaluating the performance of web service. In this work we try to correlate the web page download times at both application-level and network-level. In particular, when there is a considerable delay in the network, we tried to correlate the application perceived download time with network-level download time. We explained the difference between application and network download times and how it varies with the applied delay. This work also shows how the download times at both levels are related to each other and their coefficient of correlation. / Internet har dominerat modern kommunikation och informationsutbyte och den växer enormt varje dag. Webbtrafik har blivit mycket betydande i dagens värld och tjänsteleverantörerna har att erbjuda bästa service till kunderna. Quality of Service (QoS) är ett mått för att beskriva utförandet av tjänsten. Kvalitet på Experience (QoE) förklarar användaren uppfattat utfall och det är en subjektiv karaktär. QoE påverkar hur nöjda användarna, så QoS måste se till att främja bättre QoE. Användare uppfattas QoE beror på sidan ladda ner tid och det är en viktig parameter vid utvärdering av prestanda av webbtjänsten. I detta arbete försöker vi att korrelera webben gånger sidan ladda ner på både program-nivå och på nätverksnivå. I synnerhet när det finns en betydande fördröjning i nätet, försökte vi att korrelera ansökan upplevda tid för nedladdning med nät-nivå nedladdning tid. Vi förklarade skillnaden mellan applikationer och nätverk gånger hämta och hur den varierar med den tillämpade dröjsmål. Detta arbete visar också hur hämtningstider på båda nivåerna är relaterade till varandra och deras korrelationskoefficient.

The web user usually expects a better Quality of Service (QoS) from the Internet Service Provider (ISP) for the best Quality of Experience (QoE). User satisfaction and feedback is one of the most important factors for the service providers to determine their QoS and improve the network performance. Service providers are more interested in QoE to provide a better service to their users to maintain their customers in the competitive market. Since there is no much study work conducted in the QoE on web browsing, only a few studies are available for getting user feedbacks. So the ISP is facing a difficulty in the assessment of the user experience in the real time network. Network level performance can be measured by the ISP for QoS and user feedback can be measured for QoE. There is no study available on relating both the QoS and QoE. Relating the network level performance and the user perception is a difficult task for the service providers. In this study we have correlated both the network level traffic performance and user experience. In our experiment the user QoE is tested by applying various off times applied to some specific packets. Our main aim is to evaluate the network level performance and correlate it with the user feedback. Later, on focusing the network level performance network traffic is analyzed for different sessions with off times applied in DNS response, Base file response and Object response. We have discussed in the results by correlating the different sessions of off times that we applied and user feedback MOS. We have also discussed the relation of the network off time in the network with the number of requests sent from client to server and the number of flag bits like SYN & ACK, FIN & ACK and RST flags between the client and server. In this study we also discussed about the user feedback and how the user suffers on varying long response time. Over the years, there has been an exponential increase in the capabilities of networks, evolving from wired networks to wireless, and finally moving towards 4G networks. This evolution has brought forth many ways in which a user can access any service, particularly accessing the Internet. From emailing and social networking to file transferring, users are on a constant venture to exploit the advantages as much as possible. Predictions show that the demand will only increase with increasing number of mobile devices and subscribers. It becomes clearer that there will be rapid growth in the demand for more energy-efficient mobile devices. However, due to relatively slow increase in the battery technologies, the mobile users' expectations were not being met. This thesis highlights few interesting points on the energy consumptions by the most common Internet browsing tasks. It then presents the measurements of energy consumption on using various network connection technologies namely Ethernet, Wi-Fi and 3G to access the Internet. The obtained data from the experiments were then analyzed to arrive at an idea on the difference in energy consumptions across various browsing tasks and access technologies. Later, it involves a survey through which critical observations with respect to power efficiency and QoE are collected. The study concludes with a picture that would help users have an insight on the technologies that they may wish to choose to connect to the Internet. It helps manufacturers understand and consider the affect of an interface on the power consumption. It also helps researchers bring better solutions of designing the network interfaces. The aim would be to reduce the energy consumption by the product components rather than struggling to design powerful batteries to meet the increasing power demands from the network components. A wise choice of networking technologies is or what is may be required to gain better energy efficiency.

Towards Optimal Quality of Experience via Scalable Video CodingNi, Pengpeng January 2009 (has links)
To provide universal multimedia experience, multimedia streaming services need to transparently handle the variation and heterogeneity in operating environment. From the standpoint of streaming application, video adaptation techniques are intended to cope with the environmental variations by utilizing manipulations of the video content itself. Scalable video coding (SVC) schemes, like that suggested by the standards H.264 and its SVC extension, is highly attractive for designing a self-adaptive video streaming system. When SVC is employed in streaming system, the produced video stream can be then easily truncated or tailored to form several sub-streams which can be decoded separately to obtain a range of preferable picture size, quality and frame rate. However, questions about how to perform the adaptation using SVC and how much adaptation SVC enables are still remaining research issues. We still lack a thorough understanding of how to automate the scaling procedure in order to achieve an optimal video Quality-of-Experience for end users. Video QoE, depends highly on human perception. In this thesis, we introduce several video QoE studies around the usability of H.264 SVC. Several factors that contribute significantly to the overall QoEs have been identified and evaluated in these studies. As an example of application usage related factor, playback smoothness and application response time are critical performance measures which can benefit from temporal scalability. Targeting on applications that requires frequent interactivity, we propose a transcoding scheme that fully utilizes the benefits of Switching P and Switching I frames specified in H.264 to enhance video stream's temporal scalability. Focusing on visual quality related factors, a series of carefully designed subjective quality assessment tests have been performed on mobile devices to investigate the effects of multi-dimensional scalability on human quality perception. Our study reveals that QoE degrades non-monotonically with bitrate and that scaling order preferences are content-dependent. Another study find out that the flickering effect caused by frequent switching between layers in SVC compliant bit-streams is highly related to the switching period. When the period is above a certain threshold, the flickering effect will disappear and layer switching should not be considered as harmful. We have also examined user perceived video quality in 3D virtual worlds. Our results show that the avatars' distance to the virtual screen in 3D worlds contribute significant to the video QoE, i.e., for a wide extent of distortion, there exists always a feasible virtual distance from where the distortion is not detectable for most of people, which makes sense to perform video adaptation. The work presented in this thesis is supposed to help improving the design of self adaptive video streaming services that can deliver video content independently of network technology and end-device capability while seeking the best possible experience for video. / Ardendo småföretagsdoktorand

The multimedia domain is undergoing a rapid development phase with transition in audio, image, and video systems such as VoIP, Telepresence, Live/On-Demand Internet Streaming, SecondLife, and many more. In such a situation, the analysis of multimedia systems, like retrieval, quality evaluation, enhancement, summarization, and re-targeting applications, from various context is becoming critical. Current methods for solving the above-mentioned analysis problems do not consider the existence of humans and their affective characteristics in the design methodology. This contradicts the fact that most of the digital media is consumed only by the human end-users. We believe incorporating human feedback during the design and adaptation stage is key to the building process of multimedia systems. In this regard, we observe that affect is an important indicator of human perception and experience. This can be exploited in various ways for designing effective systems that will adapt more closely to the human response.
We advocate an affect-based modeling approach for solving multimedia analysis problems by exploring new directions. In this dissertation, we select two representative multimedia analysis problems, e.g. Quality-of-Experience (QoE) evaluation and Image Enhancement in order to derive solutions based on affect-based modeling techniques. We formulate specific hypothesis for them by correlating system parameters to user's affective response, and investigate their roles under varying conditions for each respective scenario. We conducted extensive user studies based on human-to-human interaction through an audio conferencing system.We also conducted user studies based on affective enhancement of images and evaluated the effectiveness of our proposed approaches. Moving forward, multimedia systems will become more media-rich, interactive, and sophisticated and therefore effective solutions for quality, retrieval, and enhancement will be more challenging. Our work thus represents an important step towards the application of affect-based modeling techniques for the future generation of multimedia systems.

Mobile operators face a scenario characterised by new challenges such as growing data consumption, a slowdown in subscriber growth and reduced revenues due to the success of OTT providers. To remain competitive, mobile operators must offer affordable services and think on strategies to retain current customers. Quality of Experience (QoE) is a well-established methodology for measuring and understanding the overall level of customer satisfaction with a service and has been presented as a way to improve telecommunication services. Even though QoE can be used to solve problems such as customer loyalty and optimisation of network resources in mobile networks, there is a great lack of knowledge on how mobile operators can take advantage of QoE and its potential benefits. This thesis explores the incorporation of QoE in mobile networks to improve their service offering from a technical, regulatory and business perspective.The technical level focuses on the definition of the mechanism to integrate QoE in the operation of mobile networks. The second part of this study has been focused on the regulatory framework on Net Neutrality. Finally,the third part of this thesis focuses on the identification of potential business scenarios and models based on the incorporation of QoE in mobile networks. An important conclusion is that due to the nature of the challenges faced by the mobile industry, a QoE analysis cannot be limited to a technical discussion. A technical solution can be the first step to the first step to overcoming industry challenges. However, it is important that a technical decision comes along with an informed analysis of the regulatory conditions and the business implications of the proposed solution. On the other hand, mobile operators require new methods that integrate technical, market and business considerations to improve their service offer. A method analysed in this dissertation is a Customer Experience Management (CEM) platform. In the modern society, mobile is gradually going to become all about video streaming. The main reasons of video growth are mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets which enable people to have access to videos they would like to watch at anywhere and anytime. However, due to the large video data size and intensive computation, video processing leads to a huge power consumption. Mobile system designers typically focus on hardware-level power optimization techniques without considering how hardware performance interfaces with viewer experience. In my research, I investigated how viewing context factors affect mobile viewing experience. Furthermore, a viewer-aware intelligent mobile video system was designed to optimize power efficiency automatically in real-time according to the viewing context and maintain the same viewing experience. Our research opened a door for developments of future viewer-aware mobile system design, accelerating low-cost mobile devices with longer battery life.
