The Health Right Of Refugees In Turkey

Toksabay, Burcu 01 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The main objective of this thesis is to analyze the access of refugees to the right of health in Turkey. There are significant problems in the access of refugees to the available health services and there are no special health services designed to meet the needs of the refugees. Through field research in a city where refugees are settled, the problems related with the access to health services by refugees were examined. In a qualitative study design, this piece of research involved in depth interviews with health professionals, representatives of the NGOs working with refugees and refugees to understand the problems associated with the access of refugees to health services and the dynamics of the clinical encounter between the health professionals and refugees. The study has found that refugees cannot reach sufficient and appropriate health services in Turkey and their fundamental right of access to the right to health is not realized in practice. Moreover, it was found that the provision of health services is riddled with many difficulties, such as the lack of professional translators, the stereotypes common among health professionals about refugees. The legislation about health services and health insurance should be revised in a way to cover all asylum-seekers and to provide special health services for refugees such as comprehensive medical screenings on arrival and trauma and psychological counseling.

Ozlatimoghaddam, Maryam 01 February 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This study attempts to better understand gender relations in the process of resettlement among families of Afghan forced migrants in Turkey. In addition it tries to gain an insight into whether those gender relations have been changed by this migration. In order to ascertain these possible changes a field study including participant observation, in depth interviews and interviews with experts was conducted in a city in Central Anatolia to which Afghan migrants are assigned. Since 2007 Afghan asylum-seekers represent a new event in Turkey. They have admitted the right to seek asylum in Turkey very recently. Furthermore, as their population has risen to become the third largest of the non-European asylum seekers in Turkey / there is a need for more research about them and the associated issues. The research findings demonstrate patterns of changes concerning gender relations. Changes can be explained by using the concepts of liminality. Those changes sometimes accommodated emancipation for women / alongside this the opposite occurred too. Liminality produced different patterns of gender relations.

Framing Violence: The Hidden Suffering and Healing of Sudan's 'Lost Girls' in Cairo, Egypt

Johnson, Ginger Ann 01 January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation examines the specific forms of embodied suffering war and its refugee aftermath brings to female Sudanese refugees currently living in post-revolution Cairo, Egypt in order to illustrate the suffering and healing enacted within everyday life. These women, displaced from the Second Sudanese Civil War, are what I label Sudan's `Lost Girls.' The theoretical framework I employ in order to discuss their lives is a critical medical anthropology perspective based on the mindful body. I engage anthropological literature on the body in order to better understand the embodied suffering, sexual violence, and refugee aftermath of war. My research seeks to do this through distinctly gendered analyses and equally importantly, visual analyses. The research draws on historical news data collected through content analysis, contemporary qualitative data collected during fieldwork in the form of observation and interviews, with a particular emphasis on photovoice methodology. The work proposes that the humanizing aspect of emotions revealed by Lost Girls' photography of their everyday lives in urban Cairo allows for critical analysis of the many and varied ways in which women's `ordinary' experiences of war have been hidden, the implications of this for international responses to their suffering, and areas for exploring new, non-emergency refugee policies based on more ethnographically informed, gendered contextualizations of `extraordinary' violence.

Bemötande av patienter med posttraumatiskt stressyndrom i vården : En litteraturstudie / The meeting of patients with posttraumatic stress disorder in health care : A review

Sipek, Caroline, Gustafsson, Karl January 2015 (has links)
When people are exposed to strong negative strains they can develop post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD. PTSD can manifest in both combatants and civilians. These groups of people are found as veterans or refugees in non-warring countries like Sweden and generally require a greater amount of healthcare in both psychiatric and somatic care than the average person due to PTSD´s high co-morbidity. In order to treat these patients properly healthcare personnel need to be aware of how to meet patients with PTSD. Aim: To highlight factors that influence the meeting between healthcare personnel and people with PTSD in healthcare. Methods: The articles used in this studies result where qualitative and were found using the electronic databases CINAHL, MedLine and PubMed. The data was compiled using a qualitative content analysis with an inductive method.  Results: This study found three major categories that effected the meeting between patients with PTSD and health care personnel; factors related to the relationship with the patient, factors related to health care and sociocultural factors. The meeting between healthcare personnel and patients with PTSD was affected by the patient’s attitudes to care, backgrounds and experiences. A good interaction between healthcare personnel and patients formed the basis for a working relationship. Conclusion: There is a lack of studies that investigate the meeting of patients suffering from PTSD and health care personnel. Patients risk unnecessary suffering when the meeting with healthcare personnel fails. Clinical significance: This study will hopefully help lay the foundation for further research in this subject and the development of health care plans dedicated to raise the awareness of the importance of a good meeting.

Olive oil, salt and pepper, onions, tea, bread, and sometimes tomatoes : economic conditions among Iraqi refugee women living in urban areas of Jordan

Arar, Rawan Mazen 04 January 2011 (has links)
This study explores economic conditions among Iraqi refugee women living in urban areas of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan through open-ended interviews. The research aims to address coping mechanisms Iraqi refugee women use to adapt to their financial situation. The goal is to review the proactive efforts women make to turn family units from traditional consumers (buying goods) to producers (making goods) in order to find financial stability. The study incorporates three overarching themes: First, it establishes Iraqi refugee women’s financial status by surveying economic security and employment opportunities. Second, the study investigates how living in urban areas of Jordan affects Iraqi women’s economic status. Thirdly, the study explores how Iraqi refugee women approach their financial situation. How have Iraqi women taken steps to exercise control over their financial lives and improve their economic situation as refugees? The objective of this project is to promote women’s empowerment by creating an open dialogue about Iraqi women’s struggles and to highlight the steps that women take to improve their situation. The study suggests steps that can be taken to aid Iraqi refugees. / text
