To this we present the followiong order: the concept of evil through philodophical assumptions; to present how evil appears in the book A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess and pointing out how evil is represented by the character- protagonist. / A partir da definição de mal e da caracterização da personagem esta dissertação propõe uma analise do mal como conceito moral que forma o caráter da personagem. Para isso obedecemos a seguinte ordem: conceituar e mal através de premissas filosóficas; apresentar como o mal aparece na obra A laranja mecânica de Anthony Burgess e apontar como o mal é representado através da personagem – protagonista.

Trata-se de um romance sobre as dificuldades da ind?stria liter?ria e o quanto os escritores da ?poca est?o ou n?o inseridos na cultura econ?mica em que vivem. A era Vitoriana foi um tempo de transi??es, a era de Charles Darwin e Herbert Spencer, e das inevit?veis mudan?as sociais causadas pelas inova??es trazidas pela ci?ncia, os estudos sociais e as revolu??es que se seguiram a partir destas. Apesar de sua cautela inicial, o povo vitoriano tinha sede por descobertas, mesmo que elas causassem inseguran?a. O desejo de entender o mundo que os cercava, como haviam chegado at? ali e o que o futuro reservava formaram a base para os estudos modernos que s?o relevantes at? hoje. O principal foco do texto ? entender como os personagens fict?cios de Gissing lidam com esse mundo de mudan?as, de mercado competitivo, pobreza e aliena??o social. Cada um deles reflete parcialmente as ideias e opini?es pessoais do autor em v?rias intensidades partindo da resigna??o at? a revolta convicta contra a press?o do mundo moderno por uma literatura r?pida, barata e f?cil. A parte instigante se d? quando notamos o qu?o pessimista e mesmo agressivo Gissing ? em rela??o a sua pr?pria profiss?o dentro de seu mundo ficcional. / The present dissertation deals with George Gissing?s novel New Grub Street, written in England in 1891. It is a novel about the hardships of the literary industry and how much writers are connected or disconnected with the economical culture they live in. The Victorian age was the age of transition, the age of Charles Darwin and Herbert Spencer and of the inevitable social changes which came with the innovations brought up by science, social studies and the revolutions that followed. Despite some initial reserve, Victorian people were eager for innovation, even though newness also caused uneasiness. The wish to understand the world that surrounded them, how they got there and what the future reserved formed the basis for modern studies which are relevant until today. The main focus of the text is how Gissing?s fictional characters deal with this world of changes, the competitive market, poverty and social alienation. Each of them reflects partly the author?s own professional and personal choices and opinions in many different shades that come from resignation to utter revolt against the modern pressure for fast, cheap and easy literature. It is puzzling though to notice how pessimistic and even aggressive Gissing is towards his profession inside his imaginative world.
