Shear Wave Velocity Analysis by Surface Wave Methods in the Boston Area:

Liu, Siyu January 2017 (has links)
Thesis advisor: John E. Ebel / Thesis advisor: Alan L. Kafka / As the best seismic indicator of shear modulus, shear-wave velocity is an important property in engineering problems in near-surface site characterization. Several surface-wave methods have been developed to obtain the subsurface shear-wave velocity structure. This thesis compared three surface-wave methods, Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves (SASW) (Nazarian et al., 1983), Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) (Park et al., 1999), and Refraction Microtremor (ReMi) (Louie, 2001), to determine which method gives the best estimation of the 1-D shear-wave velocity profile of near-surface soils. We collected seismic data at three sites in the greater Boston area where there are direct measurements of shear-wave velocities for comparison. The three methods were compared in terms of accuracy and precision. Overall, the MASW and the ReMi methods have comparable quality of accuracy, whereas the SASW method is the least accurate method with the highest percentage differences with direct measurements. The MASW method is the most precise method among the three methods with the smallest standard deviations. In general, the MASW method is concluded to be the best surface-wave method in determining the shear-wave velocities of the subsurface structure in the greater Boston area.

Chlodoueci Aduentus : foi et politique en Gaule

Valente, Sylvie 20 December 2012 (has links)

Fault Mapping with the Refraction Microtremor and Seismic Refraction Methods Along the Los Osos Fault Zone

Martos, Justin Riley 01 November 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The presence of active fault traces in proximity to any new infrastructure project is a major concern for the design process. The relative displacements that can be experienced in surface fault rupture during a seismic event must be either entirely avoided or mitigated in some way. Blind faults present a significant challenge to engineers attempting to identify these hazards. Current standards of practice employed to locate these features are time consuming and costly. This work investigates the geophysical methods of refraction microtremor (ReMi) and seismic refraction with regard to their applicability in this task. By imaging a distinct lateral variation in the shear wave velocity (Vs) profile across a short horizontal distance, these methods may provide a means of constraining traditional investigation techniques to a more focused area. The ReMi method is still very new, but holds key advantages over other geophysical methods in its ease of application and ability to achieve good results in highly urban settings. It is one of the few geophysical techniques that does not suffer in the presence of high amplitude ambient vibrations. The seismic refraction method is here applied in an attempt to corroborate data obtained through the ReMi analysis procedure. Sensitivity, precision parametric studies are carried out in order to learn how to best apply the ReMi method. Both tests are then applied at a previously trenched fault trace to determine whether the data can be matched to the subsurface information. Finally, the methods are deployed at a location with an inferred fault trace where little to nothing is known about the subsurface. The precision study indicates a coefficient of variation for the ReMi method on the order of 7%. At the known fault trace both methods generally agree qualitatively with available subsurface data and each other. Using the ReMi method, a marked shift is observed in the Vs profile laterally across the fault trace. In the case of the inferred fault trace, the same type of lateral variation in the Vs profile is observed using the ReMi method. The seismic refraction at this site does not agree with the ReMi data, but seems reasonable given the visible geomorphology. Receiver arrays placed in close proximity to the inferred fault trace recorded erratic signals during seismic refraction testing, and displayed abnormal response modes after transforming the ReMi data to frequency-slowness space. These anomalies may possibly be attributed to the presence of abnormal subsurface structural geometry indicative of faulting.

Venezia, Bibl. Naz. Marciana, lat. XII 45 (4165) / Intellectual networks between France and Italy (9th-10th c.) : focus on the Gesta Berengarii imperatoris and their glosses : critical edition, translation, commentary of the panegyric of Berengar I and the annotations of the ms. Venezia, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, lat. XII 45 (4165)

Duplessis, Frédéric 12 September 2015 (has links)
The Gesta Berengarii imperatoris are an anonymous panegyric consisting of 1.090 verses and written around 915-916 in honour of Berengar I of Italy. The text is entirely retained in one manuscript (Venezia, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Lat. XII 45), that is accompanied by numerous glosses which can be partly attributed to the author himself. The following thesis offers an edition and a commentary of the panegyric and its glosses, along with the first translation in French of the poem. Particular attention has been given to the sources of the text and its glosses. This study reveals that the poet-glossator of the Gesta has been greatly influenced by the productions of the schools of West Francia, and more particularly the ones from the school of “Auxerre”. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the knowledge of this Carolingian scholar while outlining the author’s European intellectual network. A study of three other manuscripts linked to this intellectual exchanges network (Paris, BNF, lat. 7900A, München, BSB, Clm 14420, Venezia, Bibloteca Nazionale Marciana, Lat. XIII 66) helps bring these results into perspective and traces the history of the intellectual exchanges between Verona, the Lombardy and the north-east of France from the end of the 9th century to the beginning of the 10th century.
