Ineradicable Pasts: The Force of Historical Trauma in Robert Penn Warren's Flood and Bessie Head's A Question of Power

Gooden-Hunley, Lisa Rene 07 May 2016 (has links)
This project examines how fiction writers of the U.S. South and South Africa have grappled with the negotiation of the after-effects of national and individual trauma and how their texts implicate the reader in the suffering being represented. Chapter I seeks to make a connection between the theories of Freud, Cathy Caruth, and Dominick LaCapra as they relate to narrative representation of trauma and the position of the reader. Chapter II discusses Robert Penn Warren’s Flood through the lens of melancholia and trauma theory, showing how Warren depicts the elusive force of historical trauma through a protagonist charged with narrativizing an experience that resists articulation. Chapter III examines the notion of madness and the inward turning of suffering as discussed in scholarship on Head’s A Question of Power, arguing that through a punctum-like element, Head shows the transmission of intergenerational trauma in spite of an inward turning of suffering.

Våld, äckel och amoralitet som en del av svensklärarens litteratururval : En litteraturdidaktisk studie av den engagemangväckande och didaktiska potentialen i John Ajvide Lindqvists roman Lilla stjärna (2010) / Violence, revulsion, and amorality as a part of the Swedish teacher’s literature selection : A literary didactic study of engagement and the didactic potential in John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel Little Star (2010)

Back, Fredrik January 2024 (has links)
John Ajvide Lindqvist is one of Sweden’s most prominent authors of horror fiction. Despite the fact that his texts appear in a number of learning materials and didactic contexts, research is limited when it comes to how his texts can be used in teaching. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to deepen the understanding of how Lindqvist's novel Little Star (2010) can be discussed as a possible literature selection in the subject of Swedish in upper secondary school. The study examines the ways in which the novel could engage the reader. It also discusses how the novel could raise issues related to core values, possibly promoting empathy and an understanding of others, as well as distancing oneself from violence and oppression. The study suggests that the novel's use of ambivalence, explicit depictions of violence and questionable morality could deter some students, but also create reader engagement and encourage ethical reflection. One conclusion is that Little Star could constitute a beneficial literature selection, provided that the teacher uses mindful pedagogical strategies while teaching.
