Excessive ROS can lead to the situation known as oxidative stress, or imbalance of oxidants and antioxidants. Systematic review was performed on PD and oxidative stress to investigate the hypothesis that the canine PD suffers oxidative stress and this varies with the degree of the disease. To this end, we selected 22 dogs with PD, all adults, of different races and genders. The control group was made up of the same dogs, 30 days after periodontal treatment, all without any changes in physical and laboratorial examination. To evaluate oxidative stress was measured the full blood antioxidant capacity (TAC), plasma antioxidant, the total concentration of plasma oxidant (OCD), oxidative stress index, oxidative metabolism of circulating neutrophils (superoxide production by cytochemical test of reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium - NBT) and plasma lipid peroxidation (concentration of thiobarbituric reactive species - TBARS). Studies linking oxidative stress and PD are still rare in dogs, and humans with periodontitis has more oxidative stress compared to the control group. Oxidative stress in dogs PD was confirmed in peridontites (TAC decrease and increased neutrophil superoxide production), but these changes did not differ as to the degree of injury and were not significant in gingivitis. Resumo:A doença periodontal (DP) é a patologia mais comum da cavidade oral em cães é inflamatória, crônica e infecciosa, sendo responsável pela produção de espécie reativa de oxigênio (ERO). O excesso de ERO pode levar à situação denominada estresse oxidativo, ou seja, desequilíbrio dos oxidantes e antioxidantes. Foi realizada revisão sistemática sobre DP e estresse oxidativo para investigar a hipótese de que na DP canina há estresse oxidativo e que este varia com o grau da doença. Para tal, foram selecionados 22 cães com DP, todos adultos, de diferentes raças e sexos. O grupo controle foi constituído pelos mesmos cães, 30 dias após o tratamento periodontal, todos sem quaisquer alterações no exame físico e laboratórial. Para avaliar o estresse oxidativo foi quantificada a capacidade antioxidante total do sangue (TAC), antioxidantes plasmáticos, a concentração total de oxidante plasmático (TOC), o índice de estresse oxidativo, o metabolismo oxidativo dos neutrófilos circulantes (produção de superóxido pelo teste citoquímico de redução do tetrazólio nitroazul- NBT) e a peroxidação lipídica plasmática (concentração de espécies reativas ao tiobarbitúrico - TBARS). Estudos relacionando o estresse oxidativo e DP ainda são escassos na espécie canina, sendo que humanos com periodontite apresentavam maior estresse oxidativo comparado ao grupo controle. O estresse oxidativo na DP canina foi confirmado nas peridontites (decréscimo de TAC e maior produção neutrofílica de superóxido), porém tais alterações não diferiram quanto ao grau da lesão e não foram significativas nas gengivites.
