Relationship Between Video Games and Recovery From Work: A Comparison of Different Genres and Leisure Activities

Gass, Jessica A 01 January 2022 (has links)
Work stress can have a negative impact for both individuals and organizations, warranting research on how to recover from it. This research analyzes how the relationship between video games and work recovery differs depending on the genre of the video game played. In addition, these relationships are compared against the relationships between the recovery experiences and other leisure activities. Participants were asked to provide information on how often they play video games and engage in other leisure activities. In addition, two different measures of the four components of work recovery (psychological detachment from work, relaxation, mastery experiences, and control) were included. The data was analyzed using a multivariate regression framework. Based on the literature review, it was predicted that different genres of video games will relate differently with the different recovery experiences, and video games will relate differently with the different recovery experiences compared to the other leisure activities. Results showed that the different video game genres did relate differently to the experiences of work recovery, but not in the predicted directions. The overarching goal of this study is to further the literature on the possible benefits of video game use and to provide a basis for further research on video games and work recovery.

We are all going through recovery: College students and their family members navigate the recovery process

Pylate, Leah Bethany Poole 01 May 2020 (has links)
A strong social support network can be important to an individual’s recovery from addiction of alcohol, drugs, or another addictive behavior. A Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) can provide college students an opportunity to attend college with a network that supports the choice to remain free from addictive substances and other addictive behaviors. While research has established a CRP can serve a purpose on the college campus, less is known about the connection of a CRP and the role of family in recovery. The following study reviews the role of family from the perspective of Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Model of Human Development with emphasis on the family system to describe what behaviors of the family support or hinder the recovery process and how the college student impacts the family through the recovery process. By reviewing a southeastern CRP and reviewing the research regarding the behaviors and relationships of the family in the recovery process, a foundation for future work with college students was established.

Evaluation Of Propane Fueled Chp Systems For Small Commercial Applications

Ramsay, Justin Byron 13 December 2008 (has links)
This thesis evaluates the effects of Combined Heating and Power (CHP) systems with a Propane fueled spark ignited engine as prime mover used in a small commercial building. The system was evaluated in five different U.S. cities. The most common operating modes, thermal load following (FTL) and electric load following (FEL) were evaluated, and an optimized operating mode was developed and investigated. The optimized operating mode is a hybrid (FHL) of FEL and FTL operation. Methodology for the derivation and application of these models is presented. Also, the economic effects of Diesel and Natural Gas were investigated. The results for all five cities and all three operating modes were gathered and compared with a conventional system. Comparisons were made based on cost, primary energy consumption, and carbon dioxide emissions. It was concluded that the feasibility of CHP had great potential, but is highly dependent upon the location of the system.
