Language Use in Mathematics Textbooks Written in English and Spanish

Bertoch, Kailie Ann 01 December 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Research has suggested that although mathematics is a universal language, the notation, algorithms, and language in which it is taught varies from country to country. The literature has addressed the challenges associated with understanding the language of mathematics in English. Variable is a topic of mathematics where the literature has documented students' difficulty understanding the language of mathematics. Part of that difficulty is attributed to the fact that mathematics and English each have their own register and at times the differences in these registers conflict. This study examined the introduction and use of variable in the middle school textbooks of three English speaking countries and three Spanish speaking countries. The results of this study are that textbooks rarely make any attempt to use bridging language, and do not explain to students how they are using variable when they use it. The results of this study also show that the language used to talk about variable is similar English (Spanish) speaking countries.

The Sex Offender Registry in Collin County, Texas: a Descriptive Analysis of Sex Offenders

Valenzuela, Priscilla 12 1900 (has links)
The primary goal of this study was to analyze the characteristics of current registered sex offenders in Collin County, Texas, as well as to compare age and gender of the victims of these offenders in order to know who sex offenders primarily target in these crimes. The study also sought to discover geographic patterns of where the registered sex offenders reside for the purpose of keeping communities aware. Participants consisted of 175 registered sex offenders (N = 175) in Collin County, Texas, found on Collin County's and the Texas Department of Public Safety's online public registries. The findings demonstrate that there were significant trends among the sex offenders, their victims, location of residence, and housing complications as a result of progressing sex offender laws. Treatment programs and the reintegration of offenders in the community were also addressed. The meaning of the results in this study can aid in the development of safety and prevention strategies, provide an understanding about the utilization of sex offender registries, and can benefit law enforcement to predict the movement of current sex offenders, along with knowing where to find other potential offenders.

Maryland Sex Offender Registry and Sex Offender Recidivism: Time Series Correlational Study.

Fundack, Ashley L 01 January 2019 (has links)
Federal and State law in a northeastern US state requires all adjudicated sex offenders to register on the state's sex offender registry (SOR) for the purpose of protecting the citizens of the state from predatory sex offenders and reducing sexual recidivism. This study tests the assumption, based on deterrence theory, that registration on the SOR is necessary as a deterrent to future sexual offending by sex offenders. Data from the Maryland Sex Offender Registry in two counties in a northeastern US state pertaining to a total of 1,985 registered sex offenders were analyzed to see geographic differences of offender, and state sexual crime data over a 24 year period from 1991-2016 was analyzed using multiple regression. Independent variables included completeness of information on the MSOR registry profile; recidivism, re-arrest rates, and violence against women were the dependent variables. The analysis revealed that offenders in Baltimore County the more rural part were more likely to provide not valid addresses or addresses that are out of compliance with state and federal regulations for the SOR. Analysis also revealed that there was statistical significance in the recidivism rates of sex offenders in Maryland after the implementation of the Sex Offender Registry. This supports previous published research findings that SOR registration has no deterrent effect on recidivism. Implications for positive social changes include reducing the number of false positives, improving the quality of life for sex offenders, better allocation of public resources, and increased safety for citizens through better assessment of risk factors.

Hälsofrämjande och jämlika insatser för individer med schizofrenidiagnos / Health promotional and equal interventions for individuals with diagnosis of schizophrenia

Ly, Li, Svedlund, Sandra January 2016 (has links)
Background: Patients with diagnosis of schizophrenia experienced a reduced life expectancy of up to 25 years as compared to people in general. Health promotion interventions concern behavior affecting interventions intended to improve the living habits of patients with diagnosis of schizophrenia. In this work, the psychiatric nurse had an important role in taking into consideration the resources of the patient. The literature indicated a difference between men and women what regarded nursing. Aim: To investigate health promotion interventions between genders for patients with diagnosis of schizophrenia. In addition, to identify predicting factors for the achievement of health promotion interventions. Method: The study design was retrospective cross-sectional. Data registered 2014 and 2015 in the national quality registry for psychosis care were analyzed statistically. The sample had a size of 5554 individuals. Results: Logistic regression analysis indicated that to be a man, have systolic hypertension and lack occupation were statistically significant variables that together affected whether or not patients had received health promotion interventions during the last twelve months, chi-squared test indicated no difference between men and women. However, chisquared test indicated that to be below 55 years of age, to have high school education and occupation were predicting factors for health promotion interventions. Conclusion: Being a man seemed to predict health promotion interventions, however systolic hypertension and lack of occupation were predicting factors together with being a man. Gender specific advice could be of help to the psychiatric nurse in the initial valuation of the needs of the patient.

Analysis of Windows 8 Registry Artifacts

Stormo, Jeremy M 20 December 2013 (has links)
Microsoft’s series of Windows operating systems represents some of the most commonly encountered technologies in the field of digital forensics. It is then fair to say that Microsoft’s design decisions greatly affect forensic efforts. Because of this, it is exceptionally important for the forensics community to keep abreast of new developments in the Windows product line. With each new release, the Windows operating system may present investigators with significant new artifacts to explore. Described by some as the heart of the Windows operating system, the Windows registry has been proven to contain many of these forensically interesting artifacts. Given the weight of Microsoft’s influence on digital forensics and the role of the registry within Windows operating systems, this thesis delves into the Windows 8 registry in the hopes of developing new Windows forensics utilities.
