The Renovation Process and Student Achievement as Measured by Performance on the Virginia Standards of Learning Assessments in Mathematics and Reading at the Eighth Grade Level

Mayo, John L. 02 May 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to look at the possible influence the renovation process had on student achievement as measured by performance on the Standards of Learning (SOL) in the areas of mathematics and reading at the eighth grade level in the Commonwealth of Virginia. For purposes of this study a descriptive research methodology was used to determine the possible influences the renovation process had on student achievement. To conduct such research, Standards of Learning (SOL) test scores in the areas of mathematics and reading, from middle schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia were used one year prior to the renovation process, during the renovation process, and one year after the renovation process. Depending on the complexity of the renovation, SOL test scores were collected from two to four years during the renovation process. Demographic variables were analyzed to ascertain stability of the student populations over the period of time. Variables such as ethnicity, socio-economic factors, and highly qualified teachers served as demographic variables. These variables were used to control the status of each school student population over the period of the stages of the renovation process. The main research question for this study was: Does the renovation process of a school building influence student achievement? This research question was supported by two sub-questions that guided the study. The first sub-question examined the differences in student scores as measured on the SOL assessment at the eighth grade level in mathematics prior to, during, and after the renovation process. The second sub-question examined the differences in student scores as measured on the SOL assessment at the eighth grade level in reading prior to, during, and after the renovation process. Findings from the study indicated that a statistically significant relationship did not exist between the means of student scores when compared over the three stages of the renovation process, in mathematics and reading. A statistically significant relationship, however, was found when comparing the mean student scores in reading before and after the renovation process. Based on the reading findings, this study indicates that building conditions play a vital role on student achievement. / Ed. D.

School Facility Renovation and Student Achievement

Norman, Dana Burton 04 March 2014 (has links)
This dissertation examines school renovation and student achievement. The study focuses on the relationship between a complete renovation of a school facility and its influence on student achievement before, during, and after the renovation process. This is a replication study of previous research, Mayo (2012), which focused on middle schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia that were identified as a complete renovation project during the years of 2004-2010. This study utilized the procedures and the descriptive research methodology established in the Mayo (2012) study. Which allowed for the same three demographic variables (minority, socioeconomic, and teacher quality) to be addressed. The only modification made was the selection of a new grade level (K-5) focusing on elementary schools. The research question posed in this study, Does the complete renovation process, which includes structural, plumbing, electrical, and heating and air conditioning changes of a school building, influence student achievement? Out of 514 school construction projects listed by the Virginia Department of Education during 2004-2010, 89 were classified as renovation projects. Out of the 89, only 39 met the criteria of elementary schools servicing fifth grade students. The 39 elementary schools were then further reviewed, and 15 met the criteria of fulfilling the four components of a complete renovation; structural, plumbing, electrical, and heating/air conditioning. The findings of the 15 schools identified as being a complete renovation showed no statistical significance between the variables and were not statistically significant when comparing the fifth grade mathematics and reading student performance to each stage of the renovation process. / Ed. Från Polishus till Bostäder : En Fallstudie / From Police House to Residence Building : A Case Study

Wällersten, Alice January 2022 (has links)
Building sustainably is something that is becoming increasingly more common within the real estate and construction industry. To take advantage of already existing materials, cultural values and adapt to the building in front of you is becoming increasingly obvious for all parties. In 2016 the company Riksbyggen launched their new project - Brf NEO. Brf NEO is located in Malmo, Sweden. Riksbyggen promised to conduct a sustainable renovation process on the old police station building standing in Davidshallstorget. The old police station building has served as a police station for 80 years but would now be transformed into a residence building. The renovation process of the old police station is what this essay will focus on. This essay aims to examine the building process of the old police house located at Davidshallstorg in Malmö from a sustainable point of view. The focal point is the building process and the recycling and reuse of building materials and construction techniques. This essay is a case study focusing on the project Brf NEO conducted by Riksbyggen. The method chosen for this essay is a qualitative method with three semi-structured interviews with key-parties. The information in this essay is based upon these three interviews together with secondary information from the companies’ websites, websites such as Boverket and other relevant literature.  The result of this essay shows a well-performed building process with sustainability constantly at the centre. The essay pinpoints what makes this building process sustainable and thoroughly examines the preservation of building materials and construction techniques.

Hållbara investeringar på gårdsmiljön i Stockholms stad : Allmännyttans investeringar ur ett socioekonomiskt och ekologiskt perspektiv / Stockholm city’s sustainable investments on courtyards and surroundings : Public housing investments from a social and ecological standpoint

Cardenas Sanchez, Reynaldo January 2020 (has links)
The council in the city of Stockholm has for the last 5 – 10 years gradually been implementing new guidelines regarding public housing management and how its subsidiaries should work to achieve a sustainable development. This study therefore aims to clear some of the questions regarding how named companies work towards sustainable development and city goals while improving courtyards and the immediate surroundings of the buildings.T he study has consisted of several interviews with representatives of Stockholm’s main public housing companies. Furthermore, has information been gathered from the company’s websites, previous reports and public housing institutions containing economic and financial reports. The report concludes that the public housing companies that are part of the study have changed their working methods considerably. With more focus on ecological and social standpoints, these changes are been applied all the way from the planification stage to the implementation of new investment strategies. By involving tenants in the investment process some of the companies have managed to maximize the benefits from concluded projects and reach higher levels of customer satisfaction. Furthermore, some of the companies have received larger investment budgets making it possible to increase their inversion capabilities. However, the companies are also insecure about how future projects will be managed if additional internal budget restrictions are applied, especially because it might aggravate their possibilities to hire competent staff. This supposes a risk of worsening the communication abilities in the organizations between the planning departments and the management divisions of the companies.
