M.Cur. / The aim of the intensive care nurse is to give quality nursing to the critically ill surgical patient within the context of the family, as set out in her scope of practice. Various factors, however, affect the intensive care nurse's actions so that she does not achieve the aim. The persons close to the critically ill patient and the intensive care nurse form part of the patient's social external environment. Both of them are therefore important when facilitating health in the critically ill patient. The aim of this study is to explore and describe the experience of mutual interaction between the person close to the critically ill patient and the intensive care nurse and subsequently to create guidelines with regard to the intensive care nurse's handling of the person close to the critically ill patient during the patient's stay in an intensive care unit. The study is done by means of an exploratory, descriptive and contextual design by using the phenomenological method of interviewing. The participants were selected by purposive sampling according to selection criteria and represent various cultures. Nine persons close to the critically ill patient and six intensive care nurses comprised the participating population.

M.A. (Educational Psychology) / A research team from the Department of Educational Sciences of the Rand Afrikaans University has recently engaged in a project to evaluate the concept "Adulthood". The aim with this project is to formulate guide-lines (directions) which could be used in the education of all children in South Africa. Each member of the team has done research on a specific facet of adulthood. This scription focuses on religiousity as a facet of adulthood with the purpose of determining whether or not religiousity is essential for adulthood in a new South Africa. Politicians, businessmen and teacher trainers were amongst the respondents asked to complete the questionnaire. The respondents were chosen to be as representative as possible of all groups and decision makers in South Africa. The results of the empirical research show that in general a reasonably high premium is placed on religiousity as a facet of adulthood. Based on this fact one can recommend that the inclusion of religiousity in the curriculum of most schools in a new South Africa, should seriously be considered. The following specific findings have been made: - No significant differences have been found in the judging of religiousity as a facet of adulthood between men and women, married people and those with different marital statuses, lecturers at colleges and universities and between people of different age groups, family sizes and income groups. The above mentioned groups all consider religiousity as a necessity for adulthood. - However, significant differences have been detected in the views of the following: religious groups, language groups, trade groups, qualification groups and residential area groups. Groups of the Christian religion are positive about religiousity being a part of adulthood; other-believers are not as positive and unbelievers are entirely negative. Afrikaans-speaking people feel much stronger about religiousity than English-speaking people and other languagegroups; the latter still being more positive than English-speaking people. People with mere standerd 10 certificates or even lower scholastic qualifications consider religiousity more important than better qualified people do. People living in rural areas are more positive towards religiousity as a facet of adulthood than suburban people and urban people. It is thus quite clear that the positive and negative attitudes towards religiousity of different groups, should be given attention before the practical implementation of religious education in schools can be considered. To conclude: it is necessary to state that aspects such as devotion towards a religion, obtaining direction and goals from it, seeking knowledge about it and finding peace in it are aspects which must be emphasised.

A theoretical model and empirical technique for the study of problem solving processes

(Psychology) / This study took place within the field of cognitive psychology, at the interface between the differential and experimental traditions, thereby contributing towards an emerging trend of theoretical synthesis. A structural model of problem solving processes was developed and a methodological design strategy for the measurement of cognitive processes followed. Indications for further research in the area were made. The major predictions of the model were tested empirically with a multitrait-multimethod design. This required the development of a battery of psychometric tests based on task analytic procedures. These tests were administered to a sample of 117 white middle class, school-Ieavers. The data obtained was statistically analysed according to a linear structural equation modeling technique using confirmatory factor analytic procedures. The results show support for the construct validity of the processing tests in terms of convergent and discriminant validity and therefore also for the proposed structural model of problem solving processes and the underlying hypothesis that the structure of information processing can be differentiated.

The liberation characteristics of Greenside No. 2 seam coal

Bibliography: pages 116-119. / In South Africa, ever increasing quantities of fine (-0,5 mm) coal are being produced as a result of the increased use of mechanised mining methods. Very few mines beneficiate the fines; in most cases they are discarded. However the fine size of this material suggests that it should be well liberated, with the potential to produce a low ash product. This thesis forms part of an ongoing research program examining the use of flotation to beneficiate coal fines to produce a low ash product. Coal is a highly heterogeneous material, consisting of a number of both organic (maceral) and inorganic (mineral) components with different physical and technological properties. Therefore in order to evaluate and interpret flotation results, an understanding of the liberation characterist ics of both the organic and inoganic components is required. This thesis presents a liberation study on fine coal from the Greenside Colliery, a typical colliery in the Witbank Coalfield which is the most important source of South African low ash coal. The study was performed by mining a run of mine coal sample to varying degrees of fineness (from 30 % finer than 150 micron to 90 % finer than 150 micron), screening, and assessing the liberation of each size fraction. These results were compared to those obtained from a sample of naturally arising fines (thickener underflow). Liberation was assessed by float and sink analysis, and for this purpose a new technique was developed that enables rapid and accurate float and sink analysis of coal down to a few micron in size. Petrographic analyses were performed to determine the liberation of the organic coal components.

Towards a geography of leisure: control, resistance and transformation within the South African city

Includes bibliographical references. / For geographers concerned with understanding the social dynamics of space, an investigation of leisure patterns and processes is vital. Studies of leisure will provide geography with a powerful focus for deconstructing the social forces operative within the urban landscape, and thus the construction of a detailed understanding of socio- spatial dialectics. This thesis analyses the state of leisure geography and identifies the issues central to theoretical development within this field. Of primary importance in this study is the contention that geographers have seldom been concerned with issues within the realm of leisure, and that their insights have been limited, given that these are frequently based on conservative discourses. A structuralist paradigm is advocated as the foundation for formulating a progressive framework for leisure studies. Such a framework, however, must be sensitive to the complex dialectics of agency and broader social constraints if it is to move beyond the determinism of past structuralist analyses of leisure. By attending both to issues of structural control and the importance of individual agency, it is possible to challenge the focus upon resource distribution that has dominated geographical enquiries in the realm of leisure. With reference to the history of South African recreation experiences and the broad principles of apartheid policy, it is shown that investigations of leisure need to include an appreciation of resource utilisation. In this way, the efforts and energies of communities can be recognised. The advantage of this is that a more empowering critique of leisure patterns and processes can be established. In order to demonstrate the value of such an approach, the thesis ends with a case study of leisure opportunities within a low-income residential area in Cape Town. More traditional, conservative analytical frameworks would have been unable to make visible the dynamics of resistance and control that are identified here. This thesis is informed by the wish to link academic enquiry to practical interventions into the sphere of leisure. The dialectics of control, resistance and transformation are manifested in both tangible geographical space and in intangible issues of resource utilisation. The implications of this reality are explored with reference to state, capitalist and community agendas.

Towards improving research among cost and management accounting academics at universities of technology : a study of South Africa and Germany

Submitted in fulfillment of the Master of Technology Degree in Cost and Management Accounting, Durban University of Technology, 2012. / The research outputs of Accountancy academics in South Africa seem to lag far behind those of their counterparts abroad (West, 2006:121, see also Chan, Chen and Cheng, 2005). Van der Schyf (2008:1) concurs that departments of Accounting at South African universities have established a culture that is removed from research, and that this is in contrast to the nature of a university. A matter of concern is that only a few institutions make up the national research output (De Villiers and Steyn, 2009:43) and especially universities of technology (UoTs) seem to lag behind traditional universities with regard to research output, as a consequence of a lack of emphasis on postgraduate qualifications and published research in the pre-merged technikons and the merged institutes of technology (Singh, 2011:1191). This becomes challenging with regard to the New Funding Framework (South Africa, 2004) which provides funding based on research outputs. Given the above, the aim of this study was to investigate research output among Cost and Management Accounting academics at universities of technology in SA and toward universities of applied sciences in Germany by examining their attitudes toward research, their qualifications and the structure of their master’s programs. Underpinned by Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory, this study used a mixed methods approach to gather both qualitative and quantitative data from Cost and Management Accounting (CMA) academics at South African universities of technology and Accounting academics at German universities of applied sciences. Analysis of data revealed that academics in both countries showed a positive attitude towards research and obtaining postgraduate qualifications. Despite the absence of a German research funding policy comparable to the South Africa, similar factors seem to influence academics in their research activities in both countries. These include time available for research; support systems and intrinsic motivators. South African respondents showed a lack of qualifications among their staff which reflected on their research skills and therefore, output. Based on the findings, this study makes recommendations to CMA departments at South African universities of technology and Accounting departments at German universities of applied sciences toward improving of research output.
