Exploring Ultraviolet B Radiation in the Landscape

Cox, Victoria S.K. 18 April 2013 (has links)
Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from the sun is the chief cause of skin cancer and is also involved in the development of Vitamin D in humans. This poses an interesting challenge, especially for people living in locations at mid to high latitudes. Through an integrative research review and controlled testing the amount of UVB humans receive in the landscape has been explored. Two existing computer models along with personal dosimeter badges were used to evaluate how much UVB students at a school in Waterloo, Ontario received under various conditions in February, 2013. Results showed that it is possible to get the equivalent of 1000 I.U. of vitamin D in February in Waterloo under ideal weather conditions, but not in most conditions. With this information, a guide has been created to optimize UVB for outdoor spaces in all seasons that children may use in northern climates. The design guide includes a summary of the geophysical variables that affect how much UVB reaches the earth’s surface and key concepts to understand including the difference between diffuse and direct radiation. This study provides evidence-based research in the area of climate responsive landscape architecture. / Landscape Architecture Canada Foundation

Adapting the web : Analysis of guidelines for responsive design

Johansson, Eric January 2019 (has links)
Smartphone usage is higher than ever and the number is steadily increasing, but not all websites on the Internet are adapted for use on smartphones. This study set out to find common and proven guidelines from the current scientific literature and create a guide on how to best adapt a desktop website to be optimized for use on smartphones. Areas of research were usability, readability and energy saving. A literature review of the body of data on the subject was reviewed and the result was put in a list of guidelines. The guidelines were used to compare the desktop version versus the smartphone version on 5 frequently visited websites.    The result was summarized with a score for each website and their respective solution for displaying components on small screens was noted. A prototype website was constructed in two versions: one responsive and one unresponsive. The prototype website’s different versions were then tested by a group of testers. The result of the tests concluded that the guidelines raised user satisfaction and readability. Sufficient energy saving metrics could not be extracted in the way design and usability was tested and had to be excluded from the testing.    The list of guidelines showed that there are solutions for solving readability, usability issues  and energy-saving issues on smartphones. The testing concluded that there was an increase in text readability and usability of the website when the guidelines were implemented. Further testing of energy saving must be conducted to test the validity of the remaining untested  guidelines.

Responsive images in HTML5 : A standardized solution in markup language

Esmailzade, Philip January 2018 (has links)
Due to the varied climate of devices used today, the web must accommodate to every use case via responsive design. The problem is that images are often forgotten when implementing fluid design, resulting in slower loading of pages and more data sent than necessary. This thesis aims to explore through a literary study which valid standardized responsive image solutions there are using HTML5 and how to implement them. The empirical study of this thesis will be an experiment conducted to find answers on what the benefits are and what you must consider when implementing responsive image solutions. The experiment consists of collecting data from three different websites implementing various degrees of responsive image solutions. We conclude from the literary study that there are currently two valid standardized responsive image solutions in HTML5 in the form of the ‘picture’ element and the ‘srcset’ attribute. We find that the increased size of data stored on disk and the increased complexity of the markup and images must be considered when implementing responsive image solutions. The benefits of the technique will show in terms of decreased loading times of the page and less data sent over the network. We also concluded that a clearer focus and more context was achieved on the images implementing art direction.

Att inreda ett intranät : En rapport över framtagandet av en ny design för ett intranät / To decorate an intranet : A report on the production of a new design for an intranet

Forslin, Ninni January 2012 (has links)
This report describes the the production within the project of creating a redesign of an intranet template for the digital full-service agency Circuit in Stockholm. This intranet template represents the intranets the company produces and is used as a demonstration of the services for new clients. Due to many updates and additions of functionalities in the newest delivered intranets, Circuit wants to update their template version and as a part of that work creating a new design for it. The deliveries in this project was several final Photoshop-sketches which described the design in detail, and initiated front-end implementations using frameworks for responsive design.

A Study on the Transition of the Adaptive into Responsive Web Design Methods on Smart Devices

Al-Ogaili, Rasha, Al-Ogaili, Zaid January 2017 (has links)
In the fast-paced technological revolution, technology has formed itself differently to facilitate the way to users to get their needs. As a matter of fact, people nowadays rely to a great extent on the smart devices as one of the essential creations of technology. They tend to access any website or web-application(s) through these devices fast and easily. Thus, paying enough attention to the design of any website or web-application is a major issue. This thesis project discusses the Responsive and Adaptive Design Methods as two important methods in terms of Websites and Web-Design. The methods have been theoretically discussed and explained to present the essential differences between them. Moreover, MyMusiC website has been implemented to show the differences between these methods practically. The prominent difference between the Responsive and Adaptive de-signs of the website makes it easy for the users to figure out the difference between the two design methods in terms of accessibility and ease of navigation. The results showed that the Responsive design is more user-friendly and more preferred by the users than the Adaptive design, as the users tend to use their smart devices first when they want to access a website than the computers.

The true nature of collaboration : what role does practice play in collaboration between designers and African craft producers?

Rhodes, Sarah January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this research is to examine the role of practice in collaboration between designers and African craft producers in order to develop a different methodology for future exchanges that can be more sustainable and equitable. It looks to determine how craft and design practices can act as tools for communication and exchange, to examine how to foster meaningful collaboration when the relationship of those involved is inequitable and to develop a co-creation methodology for practice, capitalising on the differing skills, experiences and cultures of those involved. The research explores collaboration through making with two Cape Town based, craft businesses - Imiso Ceramics and Kunye - investigating the interactions that occur between the collaborators. A critical contextual review reveals the majority of such partnerships are instigated from the top down with an emphasis on product development. This study proposes that the focus is shifted to one that is human-centred, where the process of collaboration between the people involved is foregrounded. By strengthening the collaborative relationships and giving all participants an equal voice, the process becomes more productive, with product development an inherent result. Using a practice based, participatory design methodology, the work draws on the African notion of ubuntu, which speaks of people's interconnectedness. Applying the cross-disciplinary practices of all three collaborators, products are developed, provoking a dialogue that challenges the designer's role in the developing world. The research culminates in an exhibition of the journey, conversations, issues and outcomes that occurred throughout. The exhibition provides an opportunity to provoke a conversation with the stakeholders, listening to their experiences and gaining their feedback on the work presented. Practical exercises for participatory design in future cross-cultural, cross-disciplinary contexts are presented.

Lundgren, Tobias January 2016 (has links)
In a world where the using of applications to simplify task has been more popular in both business and private. The need of an custom-made solution will be very interesting. But it is not enough in many cases, for satisfies its purpose. Sometimes the application also has to achieve good performance and work on multiple devices in a proper way. This thesis investigate what parameters that can used to analyze performance by mea- sure the page load time and what methods that can be used to achieve good performance. This thesis also investigates how we can get our application to adapts varying screen sizes on different devices.

Web Design for Multiple Platforms in Microsoft SharePoint 2013

Claug, Erik January 2013 (has links)
As mobile devices become more common when surfing the web there is an increasing demand of making web sites adjusted to other devices than computers. One common platform on the web is Microsoft SharePoint. In this report I look into one method of how to develop web sites that work on multiple devices in Microsoft SharePoint. I will be looking into different techniques as separate web sites compared to responsive web design. By exploring the approach of mobile first I try to find a working solution of techniques. I also look into another method that is suggested in a book and look into how Bootstrap could be used in the process. I will also look into content to identify what content need to be adjusted between different devices. I find that navigation is an important part of a web site and look into different methods of handling navigation on mobile devices. By analyzing different techniques and looking into what content is going to be adjusted a solution is proposed where the navigation is adjusted in a responsive design. The design is converted into a SharePoint masterpage and then fixed using stylesheets and JavaScript. The solution works on a web site with a complex site structure since it focuses on how to adjust the navigation.
