One of the difficulties that these projects are having is the lack of knowledge about the regional offer of seedlings of native species. This study aims to evaluate the nurseries and seedling production of species from the Atlantic Forest in the state of Rio de Janeiro, as well as analyze the Brazilian legislation about production of forest seeds and seedlings. To conduct the study on legislation, researches were made in internet sites of federal agencies. The legal instruments found were discussed, considering the political and historical context of each era. For evaluation of nurseries and seedling production, was used data from the "Diagnostic of Seeds Collection and Seedlings Production in Rio de Janeiro", coordinated by the Secretariat of State for the Environment ? SEA-RJ, in partnership with other institutions. The study was conducted in the state of Rio de Janeiro from February to April 2010. In the diagnostic were included the nurseries producing seedlings of Atlantic Forest species, regardless of the amount, purpose and destination of then. The field work consisted of visits to the 70 nurseries surveyed, in which was applied an structured questionnaire addressing various topics related to the nursery and the seedling production, requested a list of the species produced, performed the photographic record of the nursery and marked its geographic coordinates. It was noted that the new legislation concerning forest seeds and seedlings established requirements for producers in order to guarantee for the consumer the identity and quality of what is produced. However, some issues need to be reviewed and best formulated aiming at reducing the "distance" between legislation and the reality of the producer of forest seeds and seedlings. The 70 nurseries are concentrated in some cities and regions, not covering the state as a whole. Regarding the administrative structure, the nurseries of the state, are mostly small sized, administered by public agencies and many of them lacks infrastructure for seedling production. Only 5 of 70 nurseries are registered to the RENASEM / MAPA as required by the current legislation. The seedlings are produced with low diversity of species, predominance of plastic bags as recipients and little technical and managerial control over the production. The data shows that the activity still have a lot to develop in the state, being necessary public policies aiming reinforce the existing nurseries, stimulate Atlantic Forest restoration plantations and, consequently, the demand for native forest seedlings / No Estado do Rio de Janeiro cresce cada vez mais a demanda por projetos de restaura??o florestal. The goal of this research was to evaluate different tube volumes in seedling production, utilizing biosolid as the substrate, within the following species; Ceiba speciosa, Pseudobombax grandiflorum, Dalbergia nigra and Lafoensia glyptocarpa,. The experiment consisted of the seedling production stage and a development evaluation stage in the field. The treatments utilized were 55, 110, 180 and 280 cm? tubes. The seedling production phase was done under entirely randomized design composed of four replications of the 12 seedlings. The field phase was also done under entirely randomized design due to the seedling formation period, which was in different periods for each species. The 280 cm? tube provided the best seedling quality, regardless of the species, when the biosolid was utilized as substrate. Despite this, for the species Pseudobombax grandiflorum, Dalbergia nigra and Lafoensia glyptocarpa, it is possible to utilize the 180 cm? tubet for seedling formation while maintaining similar quality / Um dos principais problemas encontrados na forma??o de povoamentos visando ? restaura??o florestal ? a qualidade das mudas.

Control practices of the invasive plant species based on natural conservation may add to recovery measures, thus reducing the costs and increasing their efficiency. The aims of this study were to investigate relationships between different soil types and the occurrence of thatch (Imperata brasiliensis) plants in two different areas on the IFRJ Pinheiral Campus (Pinheiral-RJ); and to evaluate the use of forage legumes and their efficiency in the control of the invasive vegetation, associated to the use of direct seeding and planting of seedlings in reforestation activities. Eight trenches were evaluated in two toposequences, through characterization of soil properties and dry mass of shoots and roots of thatch sampled in four soil layers, respectively 0-7, 7-14, 14-28 and 28-35 cm. The eight soil profiles were also classified according to the Brazilian system. There were evaluated the heights, diameters and survival of seedlings of five forest species, subject to two forms of planting, tillage and seedlings, and two planting densities of sunn hemp legumes, pigeon pea and pork beans, as well as the efficiency of these plants in reducing the weed competition. The soil properties did not influence the behavior of the dry mass of the thatch, and the difference between the dry weight of roots and shoots between the two toposequences is possibly due to shading by existing eucalyptus stand in the second area. The legume plants combination did not differ regarding the influence on the native species, neither on the weed control. There was significant difference only when compared the average of the four treatments. Possibly, the use of different legumes planting forms and conducting more experiments could show an increase in their efficiency. The planting method using seedlings of the forest species differed significantly and it was more efficient than the direct planting of the seeds, showing to be the most suitable for the local situation.

However, studies on the growth response of native forest tree species to biosolids fertilization are still very incipient. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of sewage sludge biosolids on the growth of seven Atlantic Forest tree species, commonly used in restoration plantations. In a field experiment in Serop?dica, RJ, was evaluated the effect of four doses of biosolids (0, 2, 4 and 8 L per planting pit) and a treatment with mineral fertilization on the growth of seven tree species. During 19 months, growth (height and diameter at soil height - DNS) and survival of the species Schinus terebinthifolius Radd were monitored. (Aroeira), Lafoensia glyptocarpa KOEHNE (mirindiba), Inga laurina (Sw.) Willd. (Ingla-laurine), Senna multijuga (Rich.) (Pau-cigarra), Genipa americana (Vell.) Brenan (genipapo). In a second planting, under the same treatments, the species Peltophorum dubium (Spreng.) Taub (dry flour) and Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong (black ear) were monitored for 9 months. At the end of the monitoring period, the crown diameter and macronutrient leaf contents were also evaluated. The dose of up to 4 L of biosolid did not compromise the survival of the plants in the field. However, under the mineral fertilizer treatment, all plants of S. multijuga, 80% of I. laurina and 67% of plants of L. glyptocarpa, probably due to the effect of fertilizer salts on soil water potential Conjugated to the occurrence of a drought period after planting. The increase of the biosolid dose corresponded to a linear increase of the growth of the DNS of S. terebinthifolius, and of the growth in height, DNS and cup diameter of P. dubium. However, application of the 8 L dose of biosolids reduced up to 50% growth of S. multijuga. The species I. laurina, G. americana and E. contortisiliquum showed no response to biosolid application. Mineral fertilization significantly reduced the growth of S. terebinthifolius (p <0.05) and a similar trend was observed for G. americana, L. glyptocarpa and P. dubium (p <0.17). However, this same treatment increased the height growth of E. contortisiliquum by 70% in relation to the non-fertilized control. In general, the treatments did not significantly alter the macronutrient contents of the evaluated species. A clear exception was the increase of the Ca content in plants of L. glyptocarpa that received biosolids, and the increase of the N content in P. dubium treated with mineral fertilization. It is concluded that the different native forest species present different responses to the biosolid application. The dose of 4 L of biosolid was the only one that had no negative effect or promoted the growth of the Atlantic Forest tree species evaluated. It is recommended that similar studies be carried out on other soil types with other species in order to refine the recommendation of the use of biosolids in forest restoration plantations. Finally, caution is suggested in the use of mineral fertilizers for plantations with native species, as this practice may result in mortality or slow the growth of some species. (aroeira), Lafoensia glyptocarpa KOEHNE (mirindiba), Inga laurina (Sw.) Willd. (ing?-laurina), Senna multijuga (Rich.) (pau-cigarra), Genipa americana (Vell.) Brenan (jenipapo). As esp?cies I. laurina, G. americana e E. contortisiliquum n?o apresentaram resposta ? aplica??o de bioss?lido.

Disserta??o (Mestrado) ? This specie is offering great risk to the biodiversity of the site, since it has a high invasive potential and competitive ability and can inhibit natural regeneration and delay the succession for centuries. Therefore the aim of this study was to define techniques for promoting Pteridium aquilinum population control and induce natural regeneration, as well as to evaluate the response of some fast growing species exposed to increasing doses of limestone with potential to be used in the restoration of this area. The first study was conducted in an area dominated by bracken, using a randomized block design arranged in a factorial 3 x 2. It consisted of three control techniques (mechanized mowing, glyphosate and paraquat), removing or not litter from the plots. They were allocated 10 x 10 m plots into 3 blocks. After six months the bracken coverage percentage and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) incident on the ground were evaluated,, as well as the number of regenerating individuals and diversity for each treatment. The results indicated that the chemical control both glyphosate as paraquat promoted greater reduction of bracken and the removal of litter favored the entry of individuals and increased diversity. The second study was conducted in a greenhouse at Federal University of Vales do Jequitinhonha and Mucuri - UFVJM under a randomized block design with three replications. The treatments consisted of raising the base saturation of the substrate 50, 70 and 90% beyond the control treatment (no correction). The substrate used was collected in the first study area with maximum bracken roots, corrected by the amount of certain limestone for each treatment and distributed in pots of 10 dm?, where the seedlings of four tree species were planted: Anadenanthera colubrina (angico), Enterolobium contortisiliquum (orelha de macaco), Inga sessilis (ing?) Platycyamus regnelii (pau pereira). The variables were diameter and seedling height and dry mass of bracken. The angico species and orelha de macaco were sensitive to soil acidity, being responsive to the increase in base saturation. The species ing? and pau pereira are more tolerant to soil acidity conditions, but they also had better development with liming. Bracken showed an increase in dry matter with increasing base saturation, showing that liming is not an appropriate practice for controlling these species.

Disserta??o (Mestrado) ? It was also verified the influence of different compositions of substrates and levels of solar reduction under the emergence of seedlings and growth of seedlings via sexual propagation and the viability of the technique of minicache in the asexual propagation of R. grandis, submitted to different concentrations of the regulator of indolebutyric acid (IBA) growth. Seed collection occurred in 18 matrix trees established in flooded Forest Mills located in Biribiri State Park, Diamantina, MG, and all experiments were conducted in Forest Nursery and Seed Laboratory belonging to the Integrated Center for the Propagation of Forest Species ( CIPEF-UFVJM). The morphological and biometric characterization of fruits and seeds was by naked eye observations and measurements using a universal caliper. In order to observe the physiological behavior, freshly harvested seeds of this species were stored in paper bags in the open air and germinated and tested (%) periodically. The morphofunctional characteristics were observed in the laboratory and in the greenhouse by means of a developmental process (from root protrusion, emergence until the first protophyte). Three compositions of substrates and three levels of shading were used to test the effect of these combinations on the quality of R. grandis young seedlings. The height, collection diameter, number of leaves , total chlorophyll and dry biomass. Finally, the base of apical cuttings from young saplings rescued in the natural environment of R. grandis, were emerged in four concentrations of IBA and evaluated at 90 days, measuring the increase in height and diameter, survival (%), rooting (% ), calogenia (%) and sprouts (%). It should be noted that for all experiments, the basic principles of experimentation (repetition, randomization and local control) were met using different experimental designs. Different tools for statistical analysis were also used to aid in decision making. The fruit of R. grandis is simple, dry, capsule type, dehiscent, with an average length of 16.24 mm and an average width of 8.57 mm. The seed is ellipsoid with presence of sarcotesta, presenting an average length of 7.40 mm and an average width of 4.57 mm. R. grandis presents recalcitrant seeds, the emergence is of the Fanero-epigene-foliaceous type, and the development process for the seed becomes a complete seedling delonged for at least 50 days. The substrates composed of different proportions of vermiculite, rice husk and Bioplant ?, associated with shading 30 and 50% were responsible for promoting R. grandis seedlings of better quality. The technique of vegetative propagation by minicutting is feasible, since there was a 100% survival and a high percentage of rooting even for the treatment without addition of AIB.
