Based on the French perspective of Discourse Analysis, the present work addresses film text as materiality – verbal and imagery- on which the discursive processes awaken meanings. In this process, we approach the discourse of Brazilian cinema on the slum and its inhabitants. Thus, the work aims to map the different discursive formations built by movies such as "Rio 40 degrees" (1955), "Five times favela" (1962), "City of God" (2002) and "Alemão" (2014) . The goal is to comprehend the functioning of all theses discourses on the favelas, through the analysis provided by both “New Cinema” and in “Retomada Cinema”, as well as postRetomada Cinema - all strends of Brazilian cinema - addressing their continuities and ruptures. Therefore, our object is speech, although other issues such as the relationships between cinema and memory, and the one between culture and identity formation should be considered.
