Are Women more risk averse than men? : An analysis of the Swedish Premium pension choices

Hartell, Emma January 2007 (has links)
The subject of men and womens attitude difference towards risk has been thoroughly dis-cussed in previous research. However, with the individual allocation choices came an op-portunity to study this subject and to draw conclusions from a fair and representative sample for the first time. The reason is that the entire population choose and did so at ap-proximately the same time, and were given access to the same information prior to choos-ing. With this new system came therefore the opportunity for each individual to invest a portion of their pension. The information, distributed to each individual prior to choosing, contained the risk index and also the origin of the fund and these variables are tested in the empirical analysis in the thesis. Hence, the purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether women are more risk averse than men, using the individual allocation choice as analysis. The results indicated no difference between men and women indicating that there is no statistical evidence that women are more risk averse than men when it comes to individual financial decisions. However the origin of the fund has a larger impact on women in the sense that they have a tendency to be more home biased than men. However, the home biasedness seems to be a variable highly affected by e.g. place of employment. With the obtained result I can concur with previous researches that claim that women are not more risk averse than men.

Qualitative risk analysis on wave energy technologies

Bliss, Nice Sam January 2020 (has links)
Wave energy as an industry is yet to emerge as a reliable energy technology. As of now, no wave energy device is said to be a commercial success. Survival in the harsh ocean environment, the low frequency of waves and the variability of wave resources are the basic challenges that a wave power concept or a developer has to overcome. In addition to these challenges, there are number of other barriers such as economic and regulatory risks which hinder the development. A number of concepts or devices have failed one after another, to be commercially successful. Many of the failures were due to economic reasons and others were due to technical or environmental factors. Mistakes or failures can be repeated if they are not shared within the industry. This thesis attempts to identify the barriers to wave energy concepts and to analyse them qualitatively.  Efforts have been taken to include the previous instances of failures and their causes so as to avoid them in future. The data was collected through literature review of published papers, reports, news articles and through a survey which was distributed among  experts in the industry and academia.  It can be seen that one barrier can trigger others and that they are interconnected. In the same way, solving one barrier can clear the others too. The risks faced by wave energy technologies are identified, analysed and some mitigation methods are discussed.

Asset pricing and risk evaluation in the housing market : An empirical analysis of the Swedish housing market / Tillgångsvärdering och riskbedömning av bostadsmarknaden : en empirisk analys av den svenska bostadsmarknaden

Matiakis, Panagiotis January 2019 (has links)
During the recent years, the Swedish housing market has developed into a topic of major interest, both domestically and internationally. The sky-rocketing prices, the uprising demand together with the housing shortage, and the market bubble ongoing debate, have resulted in the discussion of risk being more relevant than ever before. Literature is vast and knowledge is still gained, as recent research is seeking for answers about where the market is headed towards. This study intends to provide a new perspective regarding risk as a factor in the housing market. Based on the classical portfolio theory, an asset pricing approach in the Swedish housing market is presented. By applying modern quantitative methods, this thesis analyses the results of several models in the Swedish housing market and tries to establish a relationship between different market segments and the overall market. The goal is to determine: (1) the risk factor reflected by the market segments towards the overall market, (2) the evolution of the risk factor through time, (3) the way the market segments affect and cause each other, and finally (4) the response of the market segments against market shocks. The results provide a new insight on the risk factor and the mechanics defining the Swedish housing market. This could work as a useful tool in a new approach regarding the real estate market analysis, from a developer’s perspective.
