Adults’ Perceptions of their Childhood Media Role ModelsErlandson, Kayley Karen January 2014 (has links)
The media’s effects on children have been frequently discussed, but the effects that childhood media has when individuals reach adulthood is not fully understood. Current research in this area has mostly focused on present day media figures, not past role models. Studying media role models retroactively shows the power of messages that people receive when they are children. This study used data collected from 18 undergraduate students through interviews (6 males, 12 females) to investigate three research questions regarding gender’s role in choosing a media role model, the articulation of gender identity during discussion of media role models, and how assessments of childhood media role models change over time. Findings that could lead to potential future research include the underlying hegemonic masculinity, where men are accessing their power in society through fictional characters’ masculine traits, and the influence of shared experience of media when choosing a childhood media role model.

The role of the University of Zululand Science Development Centre on pupils' perception of scienceMfusi, Leonard Velenkosini Mbhekeni January 1999 (has links)
A dissertation submiited to the Faculty of Education in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Education in the Department of Comparative Education at the University of Zululand, 1999. / This study is an investigation into the significant role of the University of Zululand Science Development Centre on pupils' perception of Science. It attempts to establish whether the Science Development Centre is effective in achieving its objectives, namely to:
i. Investigate the perceptions of science held by pupils who visit the University
of Zululand Science Development Centre (UZSDC).
ii. Determine whether specific difficulties or problems experienced by pupils in
learning science were alleviated after attending the University of Zululand
Science Development Centre (UZSDC).
iii. Determine whether the University of Zululand Science Development
Centre(UZSDC) helps create a more positive attitude towards science and
science careers.
The sample was drawn from four schools in the Empangeni-Richards Bay and Babanango area. Questionnaires were administered to Secondary school pupils who were doing science (N=88) from two different grades, that is, grade 10 and 11. Data were statistically analysed to establish frequencies and percentages.
The major findings of the study are: (1) that the University of Zululand Science Development Centre does play a significant role in promoting positive perceptions of science in secondary school pupils. Perceptions of learners showed that:
i. The majority of learners perceived science as valuable knowledge in solving
daily problems in society and worth while careers.
ii. An interest in science and positive feelings towards learning science were
expressed
iii. Predominant view of learners indicated that the time spent at the centre was
limited for them to gain enough knowledge and skills to solve individual
problems in science.
Recommendations of this study are based on pupils' perception of the value of science and interest in pursuing of science careers.

Easing the transition to the maternal roleBrouse, Anne Jenise January 1985 (has links)
This study was conducted to determine if a nursing intervention designed to teach primiparas about their infants' behaviors and abilities would ease their transition to the maternal role. Data were collected at three days and three weeks postpartum from a relatively homogeneous sample of 16 control mothers and 15 experimental mothers. The intervention was presented to each experimental participant on the third postpartum day. Effectiveness of the intervention was determined by measuring maternal anxiety, using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Speilberger et al., 1970) and concern about infant care and adjustment to the maternal life style, using the Postnatal Research Inventory (Schaefer & Mannheimer, 1960) revised by Ellis and Hewat (1982). Additional data were also collected from hospital records, a demographic questionnaire, and an informal interview conducted at three weeks postpartum. Although the outcome measures demonstrated no statistically significant differences, the conclusions support the need for a predictive framework which would help nurses identify mothers who may have difficulty during role transition and therefore may benefit from role supplementation. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Nursing, School of / Graduate
