Essays on Rollover Risk, Bank Loans, and Financial Regulation

Li, BO 14 August 2013 (has links)
My dissertation consists of three chapters that address the issues of rollover risk, shareholders' risk taking, and financial regulation, from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. The first chapter surveys the literature on rollover risk, the q theory of investment, and the dynamics of capital structure. When the market liquidity shocks intensify, equity holders' rollover losses become substantial, which amplifies the agency conflict between creditors and equity holders. The marginal value of liquidity plays an important role in determining corporate cash management, financing, hedging, payout and investment policies, especially when the level of internal cash is extremely low. All these variables are endogenous, as a result of which they together characterize a firm's optimal capital structure. The second chapter focuses on rollover risk in the context of corporate finance. In this chapter, I identify a special channel (the long-term debt maturity structure) through which the credit crisis of 2008 affected corporate investment. I provide empirical evidence of shareholders' risk-shifting behavior in the investment decisions by exploiting the real effects of ex-ante heterogeneity of long-term debt maturity structure. The first hypothesis, which examines the relationship between financial frictions and risk-shifting behavior. The second hypothesis, which studies the effectiveness of debt covenants in mitigating agency conflicts. In the third chapter, I investigates the effectiveness of the Federal Reserve Bank's Commercial Paper Funding Facility (CPFF) in restoring the stability of large and complex financial institutions. Using hand-collected data from the Federal Reserve Board, I evaluate the consequences of the Fed's intervention in the short-term credit market. I first show that (recipient) banks with access to the Commercial Paper Funding Facility earned significantly higher abnormal returns than those without this access. Second, my empirical findings indicate that liquidity backstop facilitated lending from recipient banks to their relationship borrowers. In terms of bank loans, CPFF lenders increased the quantity of loans provided and charged lower yields for firms with which they had strong past relationships. My analysis highlights the important implications of explicit government guarantees in providing timely short-term credits to systemically important institutions and reducing their rollover risks. / Thesis (Ph.D, Economics) -- Queen's University, 2013-08-12 14:59:23.32

An approach to rollover stability in vehicles using suspension relative position sensors and lateral acceleration sensors

Vittal Rao, Narahari 12 April 2006 (has links)
Safety in automobiles is gaining increasing importance. With the increasing trend of U.S. buyers towards SUVs, appropriate safety measures for SUVs need to be implemented. Since SUVs, as a vehicle type, have a higher center of gravity and hence have a greater tendency to rollover at high cornering speeds. The rollover can also occur due to the vertical road inputs like bumps and potholes which induce a rolling moment. The proposed rollover identification system would "couple" the two inputs from the suspension relative position sensors and the lateral acceleration sensor to predict rollover. The input to the suspension relative position sensors could be either due to the vehicle cornering, which results in the outer suspension getting compressed and the inner suspension getting extended, or maybe due to vertical road inputs. The principal objective is to differentiate the two types of inputs (since they can have opposing moment values) and further couple the same with the lateral acceleration input to form a rollover identification system. The work involves modeling of a semi-car model using the Dymola-vehicle dynamics simulation software. The semi-car model is developed to simulate values for the two proposed sensors. Then using NHTSA standard steering procedures and steering angle as the input, the lateral tire forces are generated. These tire forces serve as input to the Dymola model which is integrated into a Simulink model. The lateral acceleration and suspension relative position sensor values obtained are then used by LabVIEW to pass judgments on the type of rollover. The model was successfully developed in Dymola. The model with steering angle as input was able to generate values of lateral acceleration and lateral tire forces. The roll angle induced due to road inputs and vehicle cornering were estimated. Since the principal objective of modeling was to generate lateral acceleration values, these values were subsequently used in the LabVIEW Rollover Identification System where rollover induced either by maneuver or through road inputs were clearly identified.

Implementing and studying the effects of a roll stability system in heavy vehicles using a moving simulator / Implementering samt undersökning av nyttoeffekter av ett rollstabiliseringssystem hos tunga fordon i en rörelsesimulator

Pettersson, Ulrika January 2010 (has links)
<p>This thesis presents the making and the implementation of a roll stability system for a simulator truck. The purpose of the system is to prevent rollover. The making of the system consists of three parts; calculating the roll angle, calculating a rollover index and constructing the control system. The roll angle was calculated using a one degree of freedom model of the truck with the measured lateral acceleration as input signal. Using the roll angle and the roll rate, a rollover index was calculated. The controller made the truck brake to avoid the impending rollover when the rollover index was at a critical point. The benefits of the system were measured by conducting a study in which test persons drove the simulator truck both with the stability system switched on and switched off. The scenario in the study was carefully constructed so that it would test the system thoroughly. The results were not unambiguous, in some situations the roll stability system prevented roll over, but in others it had the opposite effect.</p> / <p>I den här examensarbetesrapporten presenteras ett rollstabiliseringssystem för tunga fordon framtaget på VTIs (Statens väg- och transportforskningsinstitut) begäran.

Stability Analysis of Three-Wheel Stroller

Lee, Chia-yun 31 July 2008 (has links)
¡@¡@This study provides static and dynamic analysis of three-wheel stroller which is marketed. The model of stroller is built by computer- aided design software SolidWorks for perform static analysis on finite element analysis software ANSYS and mechanism¡¦s dynamic analysis on directed computer-aided mechanism analysis software COSMOSMotion. ¡@¡@It is important of stroller safety because it carry tender babies. The stroller should be examined carefully with three-wheel stroller always used on outdoor. CNS 6263 provides the standard for the safety test on the structure of the stroller, which includes a static analysis. In order to offer absolute safety for stroller, CNS uses a high standard to test the sample. For the market permission, the stroller needs to pass the CNS test, company always let stroller too strong to pass the test, and that will let the volume and weight too large to burden with cost. In this thesis, the researcher discussed the different on stroller between the traditional design and the CNS standard design. He also made an assumption the check if the stroller is overdesign. ¡@¡@A three-wheel stroller is a jogging stroller, and it is usually used on high velocity. Manufacturer should consider its steady, especially when the mass center of three-wheel stroller is usually too high. Dynamic analysis in this study will discuss the effect on the stroller when the forces of user are applied on the stroller. By the rollover formula of the three-wheel car, this study modified the program for three-wheel stroller in order to consider the influence of the force on the stroller. Comparing the results between the simulation of software and the calculation of the rollover function of three-wheel stroller, this study provides models for designers to prevent the rollover from the stroller.

Multiple year pricing strategies for corn and soybeans using cash, futures, and options contracts

Beckman, Charles V. 16 June 2009 (has links)
The possibility of profitable multiple year pricing using rollover strategies for com and soybeans is identified. Historical futures price distributions are generated for both commodities to determine the probability of prices reaching certain levels. The upper 5%, 10%, and 15% of the distributions are determined. Price forecasting models are developed to help producers anticipate high price levels before they occur. Seven different multiple year strategies containing various combinations of cash, futures, and options contracts are established and six different strategy rules are tested. A total of fifty strategies are then evaluated for each commodity over the 1980-1992 time period. Mean net prices and standard deviations are calculated and the highest return strategies are identified. The strategies are then analyzed based on the two largest risks associated with long-term rollovers: margin calls and spread risk. The tradeoffs between risk and return for the various combinations of cash, futures, and options contracts is discussed. The highest return strategy for both com and soybeans involves selling three years of production when prices reach the upper 5% of the historical distribution, using cash contracts to price the first year's production and futures contracts to price the final two. Substituting options contracts for futures in the final two years results in a strategy void of margin call risk, but subject to increased spread risk. For com, a strategy that does not carry the risk of margin calls receives 93.7% of the high return strategy, while for soybeans this percentage is 98.3. / Master of Science
