A Matter of Life and Death: Gladiatorial Games, Sacrificial Ritual and Literary Allusion / Gladiatorial Games, Sacrificial Ritual and Literary AllusionGerner, Desiree E., 1978- 06 1900 (has links)
vii, 65 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Roman gladiatorial games had significance far beyond that of mere spectacle and
were more than savage and brutal entertainment for depraved emperors and bloodthirsty
crowds. Classifying the games as a form of ritual, and by extension a means of
communication, this study approaches Roman gladiatorial games as a type of text and
employs literary theories regarding allusion to bring to light the more profound
implications of the games. I focus on the ways in which gladiatorial games alluded to
funerary and sacrificial ritual as well as to the idealized representations of masculine virtue
in Roman literature and the native myths and legends that Romans used to define
themselves. The gladiator was both the community's ideal agent and its sacrificial offering,
and gladiatorial combat was the embodiment of Roman social values, religious practice,
and national identity. / Committee in Charge:

The Foederati, the Phoideratoi, and the Symmachoi of the Late Antique East (ca. A.D. 400-650)McMahon, Lucas January 2014 (has links)
This thesis is a systematic examination of the use of the term phoideratos in Greek and how it relates to the Greek word symmachos. The term was recognized as not precisely equivalent to its Latin cognate foederatus over a century ago by Jean Maspero, but no complete study of every use of the term has been made until now. This has been facilitated by the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae, an online database of searchable Greek texts. These terms are important since they provide a framework within which foreigners came to serve the Roman army. They also reveal the changing nature of that army, and how the foederati, formerly allies who came to serve the Roman state in exchange for a combination of land, supplies, and cash became the phoideratoi, an elite regular unit in the Roman army. Meanwhile, symmachos came to refer to those who were formerly called phoideratoi. This interpretation is crucial since some modern historiography has considered the phoideratoi of the sixth century as equivalent to the foederati of the fourth.

Le paysage des origines de Rome dans les sources littéraires antiques : fictions et réalités / The landscape of the beginnings of Rome in ancient litterary sources : fictions and factsHubert, Barbara 10 October 2009 (has links)
As the new founder of Rome, ; the emperor Augustus uses the founding myths, put in verse by the poets. This thesis aims to study how the landscapes recreated by the poets look like ; furthermore it aims to emphasize the importance of the place of the landscapes within the legendary episodes : the sacred landscapes, made of natural and architectural elements, streghthen the sacred character of these episodes. The founding myths, inscribed in a preserved location, make easier the romanity. Hellenistic influences, memory of birth place landscapes, pictural frescoes, are all the sources used by the poets to create their own representation of this imaginary landscape. A new type of roman litterature emerges.
