Foram avaliados nove clones BGH (4560, 5741, 5744, 5746, 5747, 6414, 6513, 6525 e 7609) e a cultivar Amarela de Senador Amaral, os quais foram cultivados na Fazenda Experimental São Manuel- SP, safra de 2009. O delineamento experimental utilizado no plantio foi de blocos casualizados com três repetições. Foram avaliados o crescimento vegetativo durante o cultivo, produção total, comercial, por classe e calibre das raízes e as características físico-químicas das raízes: umidade, amido, cinzas, proteína bruta, matéria-graxa, açúcares, fibra bruta, pH, acidez e cor e caracterização do amido quanto ao teor de amilose, propriedades térmicas e de pasta. Os materiais que destacaram foram BGH 6414, maior crescimento vegetativo; ‘Amarela de Senador Amaral’ e BGH 5741, menores quantidades de raízes por planta; e BGH 6414, menor produção total, comercial, nas classes e calibres. Na caracterização da coloração das raízes, BGH 6513 e BGH 4560 apresentaram menores valores de luminosidade, BGH 6414 e BGH 5744 maiores valores para croma a* e BGH 5746, BGH 6513 e BGH 5744 os menores valores para o croma b*. A cultivar Amarela de Senador Amaral apresentou pH mais alto e a maior quantidade de acidez foi observada no clone BGH 6525. Os clones que apresentaram maiores teores de umidade foram BGH 7609 e BGH 6414. Foram avaliados nove clones BGH (4560, 5741, 5744, 5746, 5747, 6414, 6513, 6525 e 7609) e a cultivar Amarela de Senador Amaral, os quais foram cultivados na Fazenda Experimental São Manuel- SP, safra de 2009. Vem sendo praticada principalmente por possibilitar o controle das plantas infestantes com herbicidas no segundo ciclo vegetativo. Seus efeitos no desenvolvimento das plantas e na produtividade de raízes de mandioca ainda não são claros e resultados controversos são encontrados na literatura. Com o objetivo de estudar os efeitos da poda foram realizados seis experimentos, em dois ambientes: Botucatu, experimentos 1, 3 e 5 e em São Manuel, experimentos 2, 4 e 6. Os experimentos 1 e 2 tiveram como causas de variação cinco variedades de mandioca cultivadas com e sem poda. Os experimentos 3 e 4 avaliaram nove épocas de poda frente a uma testemunha conduzida sem poda. Os experimentos 5 e 6 tiveram como causas de variação quatro densidades de plantio avaliadas com e sem poda. Concluiu-se que: a poda altera a produtividade de matéria seca de raízes de maneira distinta considerando a variedade e o ambiente; a poda anterior ao período de repouso fisiológico ou após o início do segundo ciclo vegetativo reduz a produtividade de matéria seca de raízes; em altas densidades de plantio, a poda reduz de maneira significativa a produtividade de matéria seca de raízes. Desse modo, a poda da parte aérea da mandioca não deve ser recomendada de maneira genérica, devendo considerar entre outros, os fatores avaliados no presente estudo / Cassava pruning is common in commercial crops destined for industrialization, a practice mainly aimed at enabling weed control with herbicides in the second growth cycle. Thus, cassava pruning cannot be recommended as a general practice, as currently occurs, and the factors evaluated in this study should be taken into consideration

The hidden life of plants : fine root dynamics in northern ecosystems

Fine roots constitute a large part of the primary production in northern (arctic and boreal) ecosystems, and are key players in ecosystem fluxes of water, nutrients and carbon. Data on root dynamics are generally rare, especially so in northern ecosystems. However, those ecosystems undergo the most rapid climatic changes on the planet and a profound understanding of form, function and dynamics of roots in such ecosystems is essential. This thesis aimed to advance our knowledge about fine root dynamics in northern ecosystems, with a focus on fine root phenology in natural plant communities and how climate change might alter it. Factors considered included thickness and duration of snow cover, thawing of permafrost, as well as natural gradients in temperature. Experiments and observational studies were located around Abisko (68°21' N, 18°45' E), and in a boreal forest close to Vindeln (64°14'N, 19°46'E), northern Sweden. Root responses included root growth, total root length, and root litter input, always involving seasonal changes therein, measured with minirhizotrons. Root biomass was also determined with destructive soil sampling. Additionally, aboveground response parameters, such as phenology and growth, and environmental parameters, such as air and soil temperatures, were assessed. This thesis reveals that aboveground patterns or responses cannot be directly translated belowground and urges a decoupling of above- and belowground phenology in terrestrial biosphere models. Specifically, root growth occurred outside of the photosynthetically active period of tundra plants. Moreover, patterns observed in arctic and boreal ecosystems diverged from those of temperate systems, and models including root parameters may thus need specific parameterization for northern ecosystems. In addition, this thesis showed that plant communities differ in root properties, and that changes in plant community compositions can thus induce changes in root dynamics and functioning. This underlines the importance of a thorough understanding of root dynamics in different plant community types in order to understand and predict how changes in plant communities in response to climate change will translate into root dynamics. Overall, this thesis describes root dynamics in response to a variety of factors, because a deeper knowledge about root dynamics will enable a better understanding of ecosystem processes, as well as improve model prediction of how northern ecosystems will respond to climate change.

Storage root production in sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Plant Science at Massey University, New Zealand

Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) is a root crop well established throughout the world's tropical and sub-tropical regions. Despite sweepotato's importance, it has been under-researched relative to many other major crops. The main objective of this thesis is to contribute to a fuller understanding of the genetic and physiological factors underlying the production of sweetpotato storage roots for human consumption. The sweetpotato genome is diverse and subject to high levels of natural somatic mutation. Applying the AFLP (amplified fragment length polymorphism) technique allowed a direct comparison of inter and intra-cultivar DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) base sequence variation. Analysis of the variation indicated that although sweetpotatoes are clonally propagated, clones show a lack of genetic fidelity to their source. Further, the level of genetic variation within the cultivar 'Owairaka Red' indicated the continuing emergence of distinct new strains. Plant field establishment represents the interaction of both propagation and growth phases of storage root production. A range of establishment techniques were investigated in a field trial under commercial conditions. Sprouts cut from seed roots and held for six days rather than immediate planting improved establishment as measured by growth, at little expense. Plug raised plants also improved establishment, while potentially reducing the degree of intra-cultivar genetic variation. Plant carbohydrate partitioning in three cultivars, 'Beauregard', 'Beniazuma' and 'Owairaka Red' was examined by field trial over the period of storage root growth. While cultivars differed in the proportions of dry matter partitioned to leaf, stem and root organs, the cultivar specific ratios of leaf to stem dry weight were relatively stable over time. Total storage root dry weight increased with time for all cultivars, but the distribution of storage root grades by size was cultivar specific. Within the storage roots % dry weight increased over time in all cultivars, but total sugar concentration only increased for 'Beauregard' and 'Beniazuma'. Finally, a storage root disorder called 'brown centre' curtails the temperate growing season so was investigated using low temperature storage and a field trial with various nutrition regimes. The disorder was found to be associated with susceptible germplasm, high soil nitrogen and harvest time.
