Para tanto, toma como ponto de partida a crítica ao velho binômio café/indústria, que para alguns autores - como: Sérgio Silva (1986), João Manuel Cardoso de Mello (1998) e Wilson Cano (1998) - é o motor que dinamiza o processo de surgimento e expansão da estrutura fabril de São Paulo. A crítica a essa análise não questionará sua validade explicativa, mas tentará fazer uso de outras hipóteses que venham a se encaixar melhor no caso da formação do setor industrial em São Carlos e, por conseguinte, de seu empresariado / This dissertation aims to conduct a research on the formation process of the industrial business in the city of São Carlos, the state of São Paulo, in the period 1890-1950. To do so, takes as its starting point the critique of the old binomial coffee / industry, which for some authors - such as Sérgio Silva (1976), João Manuel Cardoso de Mello (1982) and Wilson Cano (1990) - is the engine that streamlines the process of emergence and expansion of the industrial structure of São Paulo. Critical to this analysis will not question its explanatory validity, but will try to make use of other assumptions that may fit better in the case of the formation of the industrial sector in São Carlos and therefore its entrepreneurs
