O debate limita-se ao período de tempo entre a fundação dos primeiros povoamentos gregos na Sicília e as últimas operações atenienses naquela ilha – séculos VIII ao V AEC1. Examinamos alguns problemas da representação historiográfica além de algumas questões propostas pela Arqueologia. Abordamos os limites da utilização de fontes literárias bem como os da Arqueologia para representar a antiguidade. E debatemos o julgamento atual da historiografia do século XIX sobre a antiguidade e sobre a proposição e percepção de problemas históricos. Expomos – em caráter hipotético – o problema da construção e percepção de uma nova identidade étnico-cultural na Sicília. This paper discusses how relations between the Greeks and the sikeloi were drawed in ancient Greek historiography. The discussion is limited to the time period between the foundation of the first Greek settlements in Sicily and the latest Athenians operations on the island - the centuries VIII V BCE. We examine the problems of historiographical representation plus some questions posed by Archaeology. We also address the limits of the use of literary sources and of the Archaeology to represent antiquity. And we debate the current judgment about the historiography of the nineteenth century production about ancient times and on XIXth’s proposition and perception of historical problems of that distant age .
