A Test of the WhyTry Program on Youth Resilience

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the WhyTry program in enhancing adolescent resilience. Ninety-four adolescents in grades seven–nine had been screened for Tier two intervention at the local junior high. The school assigned these students to either a WhyTry treatment group or an alternative treatment group. The students were all from economically disadvantaged situations and were predominantly Hispanic. The treatment group participated in the WhyTry program, led by a trained facilitator at the school. Students in the treatment and comparison groups completed a pre-test and post-test using the Social Emotional Assets and Resilience Scales (SEARS). Split plot ANOVA were used to test differential change over time according to group membership, the main effect for time, and the main effect for group. Results indicated that there was no significant interaction term, main effect for time, or main effect for group. Based on these findings it appeared that the WhyTry program as administered by the school personnel was not effective in promoting differential change in resilience over time as measured by the SEARS test. Ideas for future research may include a greater focus on internal validity, as well as a larger variety of locations for the control and treatment groups.

La conception des groupes moto-ventilateurs au sein de Valeo Systèmes Thermiques et la prédiction de leurs performances aérauliques reposent majoritairement sur les méthodes de développement virtuel, i.e. la conception assistée par ordinateur et la simulation numérique de la mécanique des fluides. Dans ce cadre, le présent travail propose une méthodologie de prédiction et de minimisation de la composante tonale du bruit d'un groupe moto-ventilateur. L'approche adoptée est hybride et dissocie la génération et la propagation du bruit. La propagation en champ libre est calculée avec une formulation intégrale de l'analogie de Ffowcs-Williams et Hawkings. Dans un premier temps, les termes-sources à la surface du rotor et du stator sont calculés par une simulation numérique instationnaire. La compacité de la pale ainsi que l'influence du maillage acoustique sur la prédiction sont ensuite investiguées. Finalement, les résultats sont comparés aux mesures expérimentales. Dans un deuxième temps, les sources acoustiques à la surface du stator sont calculées avec le modèle de Sears enrichi avec des données extraites d'une simulation stationnaire du rotor complet. Avant de procéder à la prédiction acoustique, l'influence du modèle de turbulence sur les résultats finaux est évaluée à travers une comparaison entre LES et RANS pour l'écoulement autour de profils extrudés. Enfin, la problématique de minimisation du bruit tonal est traitée en tant que problème d'optimisation où la géométrie d'une aube est paramétrée et où la recherche de l'optimum est conduite par un algorithme génétique. Cette optimisation a permis de concevoir un stator moins bruyant et adapté à l'écoulement en aval du rotor étudié. / The design of fan systems at Valeo Thermal Systems and the prediction of their aerodynamic performances rely mainly on virtual development methods, i.e. computer-aided-design and computational fluid dynamics. Within this context, this dissertation develops a methodology for predicting and minimizing the tonal noise of a fan system. The hybrid approach is used, thus separating noise generation and propagation. The free-field propagation is computed via an integral formulation of the Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings analogy. In a first step, the source terms located at the surfaces of the rotor and the stator are extracted from an unsteady numerical simulation. The compactness of the blade and the influence of the acoustic mesh on the prediction are then investigated. Finally, the computational results are compared to the experimental ones. In a second step, the acoustic sources at the surface of the stator are computed with Sears' model. Its inputs are extracted from a steady simulation of the whole rotor. Before proceeding to the acoustic prediction, the influence of the turbulence model on the final results is assessed via a comparison between LES and RANS simulations of the flow around airfoils. Finally, minimizing tonal noise is formulated as an optimization problem. The shape of a stator-blade is parametrized and the optimization is conducted with a genetic algorithm. The resulting stator is less noisy and adapted to the flow downstream of the studied rotor.

Parent Predictors of Social-Emotional Strengths in Kindergartners

Strengths-based assessment is providing an alternative to the typical way that psychologists approach mental health in the literature. Social-emotional strengths are multidimensional, positive indicators of mental health that include Social Competence, Self-Regulation, Empathy, and Responsibility. Limited research has been conducted to examine the potential connection between parental involvement in children’s education, specifically in the areas of supporting a child’s learning at home, parental involvement within educational settings, and parenting practices (discipline, Monitoring, use of Praise and Incentives) in connection with social-emotional strengths. With an emphasis on prevention of mental health problems, parents are an important and potentially untapped resource for school-based interventions to promote social-emotional strengths. Multiple informants in strengths-based assessment has also received limited attention in the research, therefore potential differences in parent and teacher ratings of social-emotional strengths were explored. The relationships between parenting variables and social-emotional strengths were examined. The sample included 166 kindergarten children. Teacher ratings of children’s strengths were available for all 166 of these children. Parent ratings of children’s strengths were available for a subset (n = 122) of these 166 children. Participants were from both the U.S. and Canada. Measures used to assess parenting variables included the Parent Involvement Project Questionnaire-Modified, the Fast Track Project Parent-Teacher Involvement Questionnaire, the Parent Practices Interview, Parental Support for Learning Scale, Trust Scale from the Family-School Relationship Survey, and the Social-Emotional Assets and Resilience Scale (SEARS)-Parent, and the SEARS-Teacher short form. All together, parenting variables explained 37% of the variance in Self-Regulation/Responsibility, 29% of the variance in Social Competence, 29% of the variance in Empathy, 37% of the variance in Total Social-Emotional Strengths as rated by parents, and 20% of the variance in Total Strengths as rated by teachers. In terms of individual predictors of the parent-rated strengths sample, Positive Verbal Discipline and gender (female status) were significant positive predictors of Self-Regulation/Responsibility. This indicated that the higher the use of Positive Verbal Discipline, the higher the levels of Self-Regulation/Responsibility. Supportive Parent Involvement, Positive Verbal Discipline, and gender (female status) significantly predicted Social Competence, also in a positive direction. This demonstrated that the higher the level of Supportive Parent Involvement and Positive Verbal Discipline, the higher the level of Social Competence. Parent perception of his/her Time and Energy, Praise and Incentives, and the child’s gender (female status) positively predicted Empathy; Monitoring negatively predicted Empathy. For Time and Energy and Praise and Incentives, this indicated that the higher the level of these parenting variables, the more positively Empathy was rated by parents. Monitoring moved in the opposite direction of Empathy; as Monitoring increased, Empathy decreased. Positive Verbal Discipline and gender (female status) predicted Total Strengths rated by parents in a positive direction; as Positive Verbal Discipline increased, so did Total Parent-Rated Strengths. For teacher ratings of strengths, Trust of the child’s teacher and gender (female status) predicted Total Strengths in a positive direction. This indicated that as Trust of the child’s teacher increased, so did the level of teacher-rated Total Social-Emotional Strengths. Female status was consistently associated with more positive ratings of the social-emotional domains and Total Social-Emotional Strengths. Teachers and parents had moderate levels of association (r = .48) in rating of kindergarten students’ Total Social-Emotional Strengths. In summary, all parenting variables were predictive or associated with social-emotional outcomes except for Appropriate Discipline, and Monitoring had a negative relationship with parent-rated Empathy. Socioeconomic status was also not found to be significantly predictive or associated with social-emotional domains. Parenting practices such as Positive Verbal Discipline and gender were particularly predictive of social-emotional domains. Implications for research and practice are outlined.

The history of Sears, Roebuck and Company's pre-cut houses in St. Joseph County, Indiana : a study in the preservation of early twentieth century houses

In the early twentieth century Sears, Roebuck and Company entered into the pre-cut housing market and offered complete houses to the public through their catalogues. This thesis discusses the history of Sears, Roebuck and Company's Modern Homes Division and preservation problems of this form of early twentieth century housing.Methedology included identification of Sears, Roebuck and Company's Modern Homes in St. Joseph County, Indiana through public response to a newspaper article and through the study of St. Joseph County mortgage records. Identified houses were matched to available catalogue illustrations from the Sears, Roebuck and Company Archives. The location and age of Sears houses in St. Joseph County is discussed.Using Sears houses in St. Joseph County as models, a study of the common preservation problems and solutions for early twentieth century houses has been made. The results of the preservation study and history of Sears houses in St. Joseph County will be available for use by the St. Joseph County Historic Preservation Commission to help homeowners understand the history of their Sears houses and how to preserve them. / Department of Architecture
