There is general consensus that the reorganisation of production and labour processes and shift in union ideological focus and growth of bureaucratic structures have resulted in the diminishing of a collective voice at most workplaces. This study explores the challenges facing shop stewards at the shop floor in their day to day activities in the aftermath of these changes and examines ways through which they get around them. The day to day activities of shop stewards is not a new phenomenon. However shop stewards have not been targeted as subject for study since democratisation. Where they were mentioned, it was mostly due to their involvement at the shop floor where they are required to carry the workers grievances to the management as well as explaining union standpoint to constituent. The study affirms arguments by previous researchers that shop stewards play a contradictory role, trying to satisfy the aspirations of the constituents who elected the stewards as well as management, the stewards’ pay master who expect the steward to be a social partner, though the relationship is highly unequal. The study noted that though they are social partners, management is insincere when it comes to work environment where it’s not meeting the minimum safety requirements. Moreover, union bureaucratic structures though they are meant to increase efficiency have wiped shop floor democracy since decisions are mostly handed down from the top, confirming the argument that as organisations grows bigger, they tend towards oligarchy. In-depth interviews were conducted at one plant in Wadeville and another on in Nigel local of NUMSA’s Ekurhuleni region. The interviews were complemented with documentary analysis as well as observation during shop steward council meetings.

Les travaux de recherche proposés dans cette thèse portent sur les problèmes d'ordonnancement rencontrés dans les systèmes de production automatisés en prenant en compte des contraintes telles que l'absence d'espace de stockage entre les machines et la flexibilité des ressources. Plus particulièrement, nous avons étudié les problèmes d'ordonnancement de job-shops classiques et hybrides soumis à des contraintes de blocage particulières avec comme objectif la minimisation du temps total d'opération. Dans un premier temps, nous avons modélisé les problèmes d'ordonnancement de type job-shop (classique et flexible) avec la contrainte de blocage particulière afin d'obtenir une solution exacte. Pour les problèmes de taille plus importante, il n'était pas possible d'obtenir une solution exacte à ce problème en un temps raisonnable. Par conséquent, nous avons développé des bornes inférieures complémentaires. Dans le cas du job shop classique, une méta-heuristique basée sur l'algorithme de recuit simulé pour résoudre le problème étudié a été proposée. Pour développer un voisinage efficace, nous avons donné une méthode qui permet de détecter les conflits qui peuvent survenir après la modification des séquences. Des résultats d'expérimentations réalisés sur des instances de petites et moyennes tailles montrent l'efficacité de bornes inférieures ainsi que l'heuristique développée / The research in this thesis ; focus on the scheduling problems encountered in automated production systems and takes into account new constraints, such as buffer stocks of limited capacity, flexibility of resources, etc.. Two main objectives are set, namely the proposal of new models of scheduling, development of approaches and lower bounds for scheduling systems studied (classical job shop and hybrid job shop with blocking Rcb). The lower bounds are developed for the problems of job-shop classic and hybrid with Rcb blocking constraint. Heuristics based on simulated annealing have been developed for the job-shop problems subject to the Rcb blocking constraint. Szczególnym subiektywizmem obciążona jest sfera leksykalna języka.” Opis świata dokonany językiem powstał jednak w sposób spontaniczny i naturalny, nie w sposób sterowany. Jednak nazwy, nadawane na przykład sklepom i firmom, wyrażają intencje twórcy nazwy, kreują rzeczywistość, jaka mu odpowiada, a tym samym tworzą „pozorny”, „sztuczny” obraz, który odbieramy.</p><p>Właśnie ten „pozorny” obraz świata, zawarty w nazwach, stał się inspiracją mojej pracy, w której chciałabym zająć się sposobem nazywania sklepów i firm w Wodzisławiu Śląskim. Miasto to wybrałam ze względu na fakt, że jestem jednym z jego mieszkańców.</p><p>Celem mojej pracy będzie analiza nazw sklepów i firm. Będzie to analiza zarówno opisowa jak i analityczna. Nie chciałabym jednak zapomnieć o pobieżnym scharakteryzowaniu onomastyki i jednego z jej kierunków, a mianowicie chrematonimii. Są to bowiem działy językoznastwa, które zajmują się nazwami. Mam zamiar także zbadać, w jaki sposób nazwy sklepów i firm odzwierciedlają subiektywną rzeczywistość i ją kategoryzują. Przyjrzę się ponadto trendom we współczesnym nazewnictwie, a przede wszystkim jak proces nazewniczy w Wodzisławiu Śląskim kształtuje się na ich przykładzie.</p><p>Materiał badawczy do mojej pracy zaczerpnęłam przede wszystkim</p><p>z internetowego wydania Polskich Książek Telefonicznych (umieszczonego na portalu www.pkt.pl), jak również z bezpośredniej obserwacji ulic miasta, na których widniały szyldy reklamowe. Disruptions to job shop schedules are tedious and difficult to incorporate after the schedule has been generated and implemented on the shop floor. In order to deal with such disruptions, a real time reactive scheduling strategy is essential. Reactive scheduling is the process of repairing the predictive schedule during online execution for internal disruptions (e.g. machine breakdowns) and external deviations (e.g. prepone or postpone of orders). Existing approaches for schedule repair in real time mainly utilize heuristics such as Right Shift Rescheduling (RSR), and Affected Operation Rescheduling (AOR). In the present form, both these approaches are only used for handling machine breakdowns in the shop floor, but are inept in accommodating new and unexpected job orders. These approaches also neglect specific issues related to urgent jobs, for instance multiple job routings during the repair of the schedule. In this paper the existing heuristics (RSR and AOR) have been modified to include urgent jobs. Also a modified AOR approach (mAOR) is proposed that considers urgent jobs with multiple job routings. An extensive simulation study has been conducted on a job shop simulation testbed for the efficiency and stability of the repaired schedule using the mAOR and RSR heuristics. The efficiency of the repaired schedule is a measure of the percentage change in the makespan after incorporating repairs whereas the stability of the schedule is a function of starting time deviations that indicate the degree by which it deviates from the original schedule. The results of the experiments indicate significant benefits of the modified AOR algorithm over the existing RSR schedule repair heuristic. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

The efficiency and accuracy of design is critical for construction success. The realization of design is dependent on complete and coordinated design documents that are finalized through the submittal process. This process involves the transfer of design intent from the architect and engineer to the specialty trade contractor for the production of shop drawings. The use of information technology to increase the ability to meet this intent is not being fully utilized today. A case study was selected on the campus of Texas A&M University to investigate the impacts of CAD on the submittal process. The project was selected because it utilized both hand and CAD methods to produce shop drawings. The data collected included all contract documents, submittals, submittal logs, and interviews with the project participants. A comparative analysis was made between the shop drawings that were completed by hand and those that were done by CAD. An analysis quantified the number of notes and corrections made by the reviewers during the submittal process. A separate analysis was made of the number of errors in the interpretation and transferring of background information from the contract documents in the shop drawing production. Finally, interviews were conducted with the project participants to determine the cost associated with utilizing CAD to produce shop drawings. Although based on a single case study, the data showed that CAD had important impacts on the submittal process. The data suggests that when CAD is used to produce shop drawings, there are significantly less notes or corrections by the reviewers. It also suggests that the electronic transfer of design data from the architect and engineer to the subcontractor can ensure better design accuracy and lower overall project cost.

the purpose of this paper is to find the successful elements of THE BODY SHOP in Gavle, and using that experience to study the market entry into a third world country using the case study to assess whether it is worthwhile for THE BODY SHOPto enter the Chinese market, if it is worthwhile, and how to do it.
