Leadership Style and Teaching Orientation of Pastors of Solo-Pastor SBC Churches

Higgins, Victor Anthony 16 May 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to analyze the relationship between the leadership style and teaching orientation of a random sample of pastors of solo-pastor churches in the SBC. The leadership styles that were analyzed were autocratic leadership and democratic leadership, as identified by Lewin (Lewin et al. 1939; Bass and Stogdill 1990). The teaching orientations that were analyzed were pedagogical orientation and andragogical orientation, as identified by Knowles (Knowles 1984; Knowles et al. 2005). This study was designed to clarify and build upon the findings of previous researchers who have examined the relationship between leadership and teaching (Ang 1984; Mattia 1991). This research was descriptive in nature. It used a one-phase, quantitative, correlational study model (Gall et al. 2005; Leedy and Ormrod 2005). Consistent with this type of research design, the aim was to collect data pertaining to both pastors' and congregational members' perceptions of pastoral leadership style and teaching orientation, in order to better understand the extent of the relationship between the dimensions of leadership and teaching. Specifically, through this study, the researcher sought to determine whether leadership style and teaching orientation were dependent variables, independent variables, or just related characteristics of individuals who practice both leadership and teaching. While this research study did find that a perceived change in one dimension (either leadership style or teaching orientation) did correlate to some measurable perceived change in the other dimension, the researcher concluded that leadership and teaching were largely complementary pastoral competencies, and not strictly corollary; meaning, the relationship between leadership and teaching was best expressed in quadrants, and not on a strict continuum. This research did not assess adequately whether or not a solo-pastor could either be a leader without being a teacher, or be a teacher without being a leader. The findings of this study offer limited support for two theoretical models: Situational Leadership Theory (Hersey and Blanchard 1995; Hersey et al. 2001) and Staged Self-Directed Learning (Grow 1991). Additionally, based on the findings in this study, the researcher proposes a theoretic model of Cross-Perceptual Teaching. A Study on Sustainable Development of Marine Industry : An example of ¡§Southern Ocean-Region in Taiwan¡¨

Lin, Yu-Sheng 22 August 2007 (has links)
Abstract The purpose of this research is to investigate the ocean¡¦s sustainable uses and explore new development potentials for the Taiwanese fishing industry. In addition, several possible options are proposed, while the strategies for the operability and development of the Southern Ocean Park are discussed. Furthermore, analyses of the operations at the Little Ryukyu Demo Region, the preliminary demonstration site for the Southern Ocean Park, are performed and assessed. This research begins by analyzing the oceanic industries both in Taiwan and around the world, and then continues to examine ocean maricultures and aqua-farms. Legal regulations pertaining to the fishing industries are also investigated to assess the future and the potential of the Southern Ocean Park. The research draws the following key conclusions: 1. The ocean provides an important basis of development for Taiwan in its expansion of land use. 2. Current development of ocean use and relevant industries around the world are already showing progressive trends in a diversity of industries and fronts. 3. The Southern Ocean Park utilizes netted marine aqua-farms as a main developmental focus. However, opportunities to continue development in various oceanic industries in the future are greatly desired. 4. The netted marine aqua-farms are suitable for the growth of Taiwanese fishing industry, but are faced with the following issues: (1.) The degree of ocean pollution, although less than land-based mari-cultures and fisheries, are still an important and a necessary issue to address. Improvements to farming and feeding technologies will be required to reduce the environmental impact. (2.) The legal use of oceanic territories, especially pertaining to the regulation and security of netted marine aqua-farms, still await numerous bills to be passed. (3.) Faced with competition from other countries, a lack of immediate effort in Taiwan may result in losing the benefits and advantages of the netted marine aqua-farms. 5. The legal proceedings for the Southern Ocean Park have been categorized as part of the legislative group under the Ocean Administration Development Committee of the Executive Yuan. 6. The following presents key strategies in the development of the Southern Ocean Park: (1.) With the success of the Ryukyu Demo Region, the development can then be extended to other oceanic territories. The acquisition of such experience can serve to maximize the success rate of future, large-scale oceanic developments in other regions. (2.) Prime promoters of the Southern Ocean Park should persuade the higher-level government offices to draw attention and focus for the development of sustainable use of the environment and the bigger picture, rather than a singular development meant only for the fishing industries. This is the only way to acquire more resources and support from other offices and committees. (3.) After President Chen declared an increased effort to elevate oceanic industries in the south, the Southern Ocean Park has declined over time to its current status as an unimportant pending policy. Committed individuals must join forces with the legislative and scholar branches to apply continuous pressure on the Fishing Administration Department. This is the only way to successful stimulate proper development in the fishing industry. (4.) The Ryukyu Demo Region and other future regions should collect the local resources, especially those pertaining to tourism, and progress toward joint-industry developments. Consequently, the local communities will generate greater support, and bigger economic growth can then be expected.

Days of the Endless Corvette

Martin, Emanuel Henry 03 May 2007 (has links)
Set in mythical Humble County, Georgia, Days of the Endless Corvette tells the story of Earl Mulvaney, a high-school dropout and auto mechanic. Earl loves Ellen, the brainy and beautiful girl next door, who unfortunately must marry Troy, the star of the high school football team. Throughout the book Earl labors on his “Endless Corvette,” a project as impossible as trying to build a perpetual motion machine. Earl has noticed that each time he takes something apart and rebuilds it, there are leftover parts. He reasons that by disassembling and reassembling his boss’s ’59 Corvette, and saving the leftover pieces each time, eventually he will have enough parts to build an entire car, leaving the original behind. The novel ends with the suggestion that perhaps Earl has succeeded at his project, which stands as a metaphor not only for Earl’s hopeless love, but other searches for answers to life’s perplexities.

The Southern Gentleman and the Idea of Masculinity: Figures and Aspects of the Southern Beau in the Literary Tradition of the American South

Gros, Emmeline 12 December 2010 (has links)
The American planter has mostly been presented as the epitome of the romantic cavalier legend that could be found in the fiction of John Pendleton Kennedy to Thomas Nelson Page: a man of chivalric manners and good breeding; a man of good social position; a man of wealth and leisure (Concise Oxford Dictionary). A closer scrutiny of the cavalier and genteel ethos of the time, however, reveals the inherent ideological inconsistencies with the idea of the gentleman itself, as the ideal came to be more and more perceived as an illusion and as challenges to traditional gender stereotypes came to redefine the nature and role of the Southern Gentleman. This study hopes to complicate the traditional delineation of hegemonic manhood with the aim to better understand how precisely the Old South’s masculine ideals were constructed and maintained over time, especially in times of crisis, and how southern elite males (re)defined, enacted, and/or maintained a distinctive Southern model of masculinity while others resisted, modified, or flouted those ideals. The work undertaken by this dissertation can thus be situated within the broad rubric of masculinity studies and its central axiom—the interrogation of the structures of power, domination, and hierarchy. Enriching masculinity studies of the Old South, this critical study of Southern American fiction attempts to respond to the invitation of historians like Stephen Berry or Craig Thompson Friend in striking a commendable balance between conceptualizing larger historical questions and narrating the intimacies and complexities of Southern men’s individual lives. Taken collectively, these novels continue to explore this fertile field by moving outside the “confines and confidences of elites” (Peel 1). Because it complicates any simple equation between honor, mastery, and manliness, and because it seeks to revisit traditional conceptualisations of gender, I hope that this study will open new ways of thinking about the privileges and wounds of a masculinity that has been considered by most as the normative, invisible, and unquestioned referent from which to measure marginalized others—foreigners, women, or non-whites.

Vulnerability Assessment of Rural Communities in Southern Saskatchewan

Luk, Ka Yan January 2011 (has links)
Water resources in Canada are of major environmental, social and economic value. It is expected that climate change will be accompanied by more intense competition for water supply in water-stressed agricultural areas such as the southern Prairies. Beyond physical impacts, drought can be seen as a socio-economic and political problem which ultimately has implications for community-level vulnerability to climate change. This thesis presents empirical vulnerability case studies focused on the exposure-sensitivity and adaptive capacity of Coronach and Gravelbourg in southern Saskatchewan. The results illustrate the fact that farmers or ranchers are not merely passive victims of drought. They also take an active role in shaping the environment around them, thus affecting their own vulnerability to drought. Therefore, by understanding the causal linkages of the coupled social-environment system, a more comprehensive understanding of community vulnerability is achievable and informed decisions can be made based on this thorough understanding of local conditions. In the second part of this thesis, the potential of soft water path is evaluated as a possible adaptation strategy. Based on the results gathered in the first part of this thesis, adaptation measures are tailored to address specific needs of different sectors in the Town of Coronach and the Town of Gravelbourg while ensuring ecological sustainability. Examples of possible paths (adaptation measures) are suggested in order to increase community adaptive capacity to water shortages in light of future climate changes.
