Eriksson, Lisa January 2013 (has links)
The kiss of the spider woman, novel written by Argentinian novelist Manuel Puig, is the story oftwo prisoners in a prison in Buenos Aires during the military dictatorship. This thesis will focus onthe feminine identity of protagonist Molina, a homosexual man who choses to regard himself as awoman. The aim of this thesis is to examine his construction of the feminine identity, and connectthat construction with feminist and queer theories of gender as socially constructed, opposed toinnate or given by biological gender.

Production of Synthetic Spider Silk

Hekman, Ryan Matthew 01 January 2018 (has links)
Spider silk is a material that both has impressive mechanical properties and is also environmentally friendly. Though there are limitless potential engineering applications for such materials, industrial production of spider silk has proven to be challenging. Farming silk from spiders, as is done with silkworms, is not a viable option for large-scale production of spider silk due to the venomous and predatory nature of spiders. Here, an attempt is made to express synthetic spider silk minifibroins heterologously in Escherichia coli, to purify the recombinant spidroins from cell lysate, and to spin them into artificial fibers through a biomimetic process. Silk minifibroins were designed to be similar to Major Ampullate Spidroin 1 from Latrodectus hesperus. Synthetic fibers were examined by scanning electron and light microscopy, and their mechanical properties were tested by a tensometer. Properties of synthetic silk were compared to those of native dragline silk from the same species from which their design was inspired, revealing synthetic silk fibers with lower breaking stress and breaking strain.

Training of spider monkeys in a food-rewarded two-choice olfactory discrimination paradigm and assessment of olfactory learning and memory performance

Aineslahti, Emmi January 2019 (has links)
There is little knowledge about olfactory learning in primates, even though primates are known to use olfaction in several behaviors including food selection and territorial defense. Therefore I assessed the olfactory learning and memory performance in five adult spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) using a food-rewarded two-choice olfactory discrimination paradigm. The spider monkeys acquired the initial odor discrimination in 530-1102 trials and in a series of intramodal transfer tasks they needed 30-510 trials to reach the learning criterion. There was a significant negative correlation between the number of trials needed to reach the learning criterion and the number of transfer tasks completed. Thus, as a group, the animals displayed olfactory learning set formation. The number of trials that the spider monkeys needed in initial olfactory learning was comparable to that of other primate species tested previously but higher compared to that of other mammals such as dogs and rats. The learning speed of the spider monkeys in intramodal transfer tasks was similar to that of other mammals tested, suggesting that primates are less prepared to use olfactory cues in the initial solving of a problem but that once they learn the concept, their learning speed with novel odor discrimination problems is not generally slower than that of non-primate mammals. All spider monkeys tested reached the learning criterion in the memory tasks straight on the first testing day, that is: within 30 trials, suggesting similar long-term odor memory capabilities in spider monkeys and other mammals such as dogs, mice and rats.

Immune system in aracnids: chemical structure and biological activity of antimicrobials peptides from Acanthoscurria gomesiana.

Pedro Ismael da Silva Junior 22 September 2000 (has links)
Antimicrobial peptides are important components of the vertebrates and invertebrates immune system. In this work we purified and characterized four molecules from Acanthoscurria gomesiana spider hemolimph: 1) theraphosinin, a 4,052.5 Da peptide purified from plasma with anti-Micrococcus luteus activity. It does not show similarity with any other invertebrate immune peptides. From the hemocytes three peptides have been purified: 2) mygalomorphin, a peptide with 415.9 Da, which shows anti-Escherichia coli activity. This activity is inhibited by catalase, therefore it may be, related to the H2O2 production; 3) gomesin, a peptide with 2,270.4 Da, that shows high similarity with tachyplesins and protegrins. It have large activity spectrum against bacteria, yeast, fungi and Leishmania; 4) acanthoscurrin, a glycine-rich peptide that shows two isoforms of 10,132.4 and 10,249.1 Da. This peptide has activity against E. coli and Candida albicans and shows high similarity with antifungal proteins of insects and plants defense proteins.
