An evaluation of two strains of Cyrtobagous salviniae Calder and Sands as natural enemies of the aquatic weeds salvinia molesta Mitchell and Salvinia minima Baker

Dye, Jeremiah M. 12 April 2006 (has links)
The floating aquatic weeds common salvinia (Salvinia minima Baker) and giant salvinia (Salvinia molesta Mitchell) degrade aquatic systems through fast, mat forming growth. The Salvinia specialist weevil Cyrtobagous salviniae Calder and Sands has been used to reduce the severity of giant salvinia infestations and associated with reduced severity of common salvinia infestations. Genetically, morphologically and biologically distinct strains of C. salviniae exist, but their relative potential for success as biological control agents of Salvinia species has not been evaluated. This thesis (1) describes a recirculating water system designed for conducting such studies and (2) reports the results of C. salviniae strain comparisons. A recirculating water system with a high degree of replication and minimal variation in water flow, temperature and light intensity was used for laboratory experiments using sixty-day temperature profiles averaging 31.4, 26.5 and 8.0ºC derived from surface water temperatures measured at lakes in expected range of Salvinia species in the North America. Larval and adult population numbers of two C. salviniae strains (Australia and Florida) were determined for each temperature profile along with feeding induced plant necrosis on both Salvinia species. Australia C. salviniae had lower survivorship rates to adulthood on common salvinia than did Florida C. salviniae at the 31.4 and 26.5ºC temperature profiles. Neither strain reproduced, and no significant between-strain differences in plant necrosis were detected at the 8.0ºC temperature profile. At 31.4ºC there were no significant differences in adult counts, larval counts or plant damage between the two strains on giant salvinia. At 26.5ºC, however, significantly fewer larvae were collected from initially released adults and significantly less plant necrosis was associated with weevil feeding by Florida strain compared to Australia strain weevils. These results may have arisen from comparing Australia weevils from a growing colony to Florida weevils from a declining colony. Overall, the results indicate that only Florida C. salviniae should be released against common salvinia. Florida C. salviniae may be equally suitable to Australia C. salviniae for releases against giant salvinia, but further study is needed to fully assess the potential for using Florida C. salviniae against giant salvinia.

Plants are source of biologically important natural products, many of which de- rive many drugs. A great diversity founded in Brazil justifies a significant growth in the use of plant products as potential antimicrobials against several infec- tions. Salvinia auriculata is an aquatic macrophyte with promising antibacterial activity against bacterias that causes bovine mastitis. The aim of this work was the isolation and identification of chemical constituents obtained from leaves and roots of S. auriculata Aubl. and evaluation of the crude extracts in the pre- vention and control of bovine mastitis. On Chapter I, it was evaluated the mini- mum inhibitory concentration and revealed that the extracts with strong antibac- terial activity against S. aureus were leaves and roots extracts (March collec- tion) produced by petroleum ether and roots (March Collection) produced by ethanol. Those three extracts were mixed in equal proportion and the cytotoxic activity and antibacterial biofilm inhibition was evaluated. Thus, the mixed were analysed using the Excised Teat Model. The extracts showed no toxic activity in bovine mammary epithelial cells, exhibited antibiofilm activity against S. aureus and the agreement with the excised teat model, a mixture of extracts was effi- cacious against bacterias as compared with comercial germicides. It is conclud- ed that the plant S. auriculata is a powerful germicide against S. aureus and may eventually be used in the prevention and control of bovine mastitis. On Chapter II, it was described the chromatographic profile (HPLC and GC-MS) of crude extracts with strong antibacterial activity and isolation/ identification of secondary metabolites. The results showed the identification the compounds as stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, octadecanoic acid and stigmast-22-en-3,6-dione. The antibacterial activity of stigmast -22 -ene -3,6 -dione was evaluated and demon- strated strong activity against strains of S. aureus.

After the three species being exposed to five concentrations of As (0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mg.L-1) in nutrient solution, the As content into the plants, relative growth rate (TCR), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutatione reductase (GR) enzymatic activity, total thiol, non protein thiol and protein thiol content and anthocyanin content were determined. L. gibba showed the highest tolerance to As, requiring 967,6 μg g-1MD to reduce growth in 50%. A. caroliniana required 429,2 μg g-1MD to show this level of growth reduction and S. minima required 255,08 μg g-1MD for the same response. Antioxidant mechanisms to the increase in As concentration in the medium characterized each species. A. caroliniana went through increases in CAT and GR activities, keeping unaltered SOD and POX activities, and showing reduction in APX activity, although it presented the highest activity of this enzyme. S. minima exhibited increase in SOD, CAT, APX and GR activities, keeping POX activity unaltered, with the increase of As concentration in the growth medium. L. gibba higher tolerance to As effects seem to be related to the enzymatic antioxidant mechanisms and also to the non-enzymatic ones. This species, besides presenting higher SOD, CAT, POX and GR activities, also showed higher thiol and anthocyanin content than the other two species studied. Although A. caroliniana and S. minima also presented increase in the activity of several enzymes, L. gibba s higher tolerance seems to be due not only to the increase in these antioxidant processes, but also to superior basal activity of these enzymes, and to higher thiol and anthocyanin basal content. Besides the increase in enzymatic activities, L. gibba exhibited total-thiol and non-protein thiol content increase, diminishing protein thiol content. A. caroliniana and S. minima practically did not suffer alterations in thiol content. As L. gibba, A. caroliniana and S. minima revealed an increment in anthocyanin content after exposure to increasing concentrations of As in the solution. In this context, L. gibba showed the highest potential to be employed in phytoremediation.

Araujo, Arianne Oliveira de January 2018 (has links)
Super-hydrophobicity is a characteristic found in several surfaces of nature, which gives them certain features such as self-cleaning. One of the most well-known examples of a super-hydrophobic self-cleaning surface is the one present on the Lotus leaf, that contains an important layer of air retention between the cavities of the surface. This layer of air retention between cavities is a characteristic of some superhydrophobic surfaces, and has attracted a lot of attention recently, from technological, economic and ecological fields. Some species have a surface that holds this layer of air for only a few hours or days. Other species, however, maintain that for long periods of time. One of the most complex surfaces is the floating fern Salvinia - able to maintain a stable air layer for several weeks, even when submerged in water. Several studies have been carried out to develop technologies able to keep the air retention on surface for long periods, as they have a great potential to be applied in the naval sector, for instance, because they could reduce the hydrodynamic drag when used in the coating of boats, also reducing fuel consumption. The aim of this work is to obtain, by mimicking Salvinia’s structure and its species, a super-hydrophobic air-layer retaining surface, capable of reducing hydrodynamic drag. For this purpose, coatings composed in two stages were developed: a base composed by polyamide fibers to generate roughness - applied by electrostatic flocking - and covered by an organosilane (hydrophobic) spray. Then, the properties of the coatings were characterized in terms of morphology, angle of contact, rolling angle and volume of air hold on the surface, as well as tests to check their hydrodynamic drag reduction capacity. The super-hydrophobic coatings developed in this work have presented an air layer on surface and the tests has shown a hydrodynamic drag reduction for of up to 30%.

Steigleder, Ana Paula January 2010 (has links)
The bionic analysis is a versatile tool that shows great technological potential either in industrial applications as well as in consumption goods because by its usage the designer researches and seeks in Biology indications and orientations of elements, and functional and formal mechanisms that enable the development of products. Thus, products that need thermal comfort, proofing of walls, slab stones, tiles, and similar products or even problems with the removal of residues from the bottom of packages have got in bionic analysis intelligent solutions optimized by nature. This research aims to analyze the morphology of the aquatic plant Salvinia Molesta with the purpose to investigate the capacity of water repellence on the surface of the leave in order to later reproduce its properties aiming at the development of products that necessitate impermeable surfaces. For this analysis there has been carried out distinct characterization methods, such as: stereoscopical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy - SEM, measurement of the contact angle, measurement of the hysteresis of the angle, and analysis by energy dispersion system - EDS. After the compilation of these data a 3D computer simulation was developed which served as a demonstration as well as a better comprehension of the mechanism on the way the water repellence capacity of Salvinia Molesta works. The characterization by scanning electron microscopy showed the structure of the hair where it identified the places where there were the presence and absence of waxes on the plant’s hairs. The measurement of the contact angle of the leave surface is an important data because it defines the capacity of water absorption on the surface of the plant. The characterization results indicate Salvinia Molesta’s hydrophobicity which had not been mentioned in the literature up to now. This research was also preceded by a bionic methodology which conducted in a systematic research where Salvinia Molesta’s necessity, potentials, and limitations were evaluated, enabling this methodology to be applied in the bionic study of plants in general.
