CHARACTERIZING MUSCUPIABIT (CA-SBR-425/H) AND ITS PLACE IN THE GREATER SERRANO SETTLEMENT SYSTEM

First excavated in 1938, the site of Muscupiabit (CA-SBR-425/H) has long been a subject of archaeological research in the San Bernardino Mountains. Previous excavations at the site have either been unpublished or limited in scope. A primary goal was to obtain a radiocarbon date for the site, giving a definitive age to the site. Other goals included determining the population size of Muscupiabit as well as the function of the site and its place in the Serrano settlement system. To obtain dateable material, an excavation was conducted in hopes of locating a thermal feature. An intact thermal feature was found and charcoal was recovered. In order to adequately address the proposed research questions, museum collections were used to gain a larger sample size. A large quantity of artifacts had been excavated in the 1980s but were never analyzed. Between those excavations and the 2017 excavations, 7 units were analyzed. Additionally, population records from the Spanish mission system were analyzed to address research questions about population size. Based on a radiocarbon date, shell bead types, and population records, it appears that Muscupiabit was occupied in the late 17th/early 18th century and was likely abandoned by 1815. Despite its location along a trade route, the site does not appear to have been controlling trade. Muscupiabit was intermarried with other villages but it’s level of political independence cannot be determined at this time.

Deriving basin-wide denudation rates from cosmogenic radionuclides, San Bernardino Mountains, California

As increasing emphasis is placed upon the role surface processes play in regulating tectonic behaviour, the need for accurate measurements of denudation rate has become paramount. The quantity and quality of denudation rate studies has grown with the advent of cosmogenic radionuclide techniques, capable of recording denudation rates over timescales of 100 to 1000000 years. This study seeks to utilise cosmogenic 10Be concentrations measured in alluvial sediments in order to further develop this method and to investigate rates of basin-wide denudation in the San Bernardino Mountains, an active orogen associated with the San Andreas Fault system. The theory which underpins measurements of basin-wide denudation rates with cosmogenic radionuclide analysis is evaluated in light of recent understanding of production mechanisms. Field testing of the assumptions required by the basinwide denudation rate model highlights the importance of sampling thoroughly mixed sediments. Denudation rates ranging over three orders of magnitude are measured by applying the cosmogenic radionuclide technique in thirty-seven basins throughout the San Bernardino Mountains. Results show a relationship between denudation rate and slope which provides quantification of the threshold slope angle in high relief granitic environments and suggests tectonic activity is the first order control of denudation rates in these mountains. Mean annual precipitation is shown to exert no significant influence over the rates measured in the San Bernardino Mountains. Questions concerning denudation rates recorded over differing timespans are addressed using the cosmogenic technique, (U-Th)/He thermochronometry, incision into dated horizons and modern day sediment flux data. This comparison reveals that a decrease in rates with distance from the San Andreas Fault has been consistent throughout the lifespan of the San Bernardino Mountains and provides further evidence that a tectonic mechanism is driving denudation in this region. The relevance of both spatial and temporal scale in geomorphic studies is considered in light of these results, highlighting the need for a greater appreciation of their role in the interpretation of basin-wide denudation rates.

Examination of Exhumed Faults in the Western San Bernardino Mountains, California: Implications for Fault Growth and Earthquake Rupture

The late Miocene Cedar Springs fault system is a high-angle transpressional system in the Silverwood Lake area, western San Bernardino Mountains, southern California. This thesis presents the study of oblique-slip faults with modest amounts of slip, which represent the early stages of fault development by using slip as a proxy for maturity. A structural and geochemical characterization is provided for six fault zones ranging from 39 m of slip to 3.5 km of offset in order to develop a model of fault zone geometry and composition. Basic geometric and kinematic results are provided for an additional 29 small-displacement (cm- to m-scale) faults. The main faults of this study can be divided into the fault core composed of sheared clay gouge and micro breccia, the primary damage zone made up of chemically altered rock with microstructural damage and grain-size reduction, and the secondary damage zone, which is characterized by an increased fracture density relative to the host rock. Although there appears to be a general increase in fault core thickness with increasing slip, the correlation is insignificant when analyzing all faults. Both the primary and secondary damage zones appear to thicken with increased slip on the main fault. Overall, the structure and composition of the faults studied here are similar to those of larger strike-slip and reverse faults. This indicates that the fault core develops early in a fault's history. Subsequent slip appears to be focused along these narrow zones, with some deformation accumulating in the damage zone. Whole-rock geochemical analyses typically show a reduction in the abundance of Na, Al, K, and Ca in the fault core and primary damage zone relative to the host rock. This indicates enhanced fluid-rock interactions in these zones. Calculations of the energy consumed to produce the chemical alteration in the fault core indicate that a considerable amount of the total earthquake energy may be lost to alteration. This thesis concludes that fault processes are similar throughout the different stages of development, and the study of relatively small-displacement faults can therefore be used to understand fault evolution through time and the processes of larger faults in the brittle crust.
