On point sources and near field measurements in inverse acoustic obstacle scattering

Orispää, M. (Mikko) 16 November 2002 (has links)
Abstract The dissertation considers an inverse acoustic obstacle scattering problem in which the incident field is generated by a point source and the measurements are made in the near field region. Three methods to solve the problem of reconstructing the support of an unknown sound-soft or sound-hard scatterer from the near field measurements are presented. Methods are modifications of Kirsch factorization and modified Kirsch factorization methods. Numerical examples are given to show the practicality of one of the methods.

Jost-matrix analysis of nuclear scattering data

Vaandrager, Paul January 2020 (has links)
The analysis of scattering data is usually done by fitting the S-matrix at real experimental energies. An analytic continuation to complex and negative energies must then be performed to locate possible resonances and bound states, which correspond to poles of the S-matrix. Difficulties in the analytic continuation arise since the S-matrix is energy dependent via the momentum, k and the Sommerfeld parameter, η, which makes it multi-valued. In order to circumvent these difficulties, in this work, the S-matrix is written in a semi-analytic form in terms of the Jost matrices, which can be given as a product of known functions dependent on k and η, and unknown functions that are entire and singled-valued in energy. The unknown functions are approximated by truncated Taylor series where the expansion coefficients serve as the data-fitting parameters. The proper analytic structure of the S-matrix is thus maintained. This method is successfully tested with data generated by a model scattering potential. It is then applied to α12C scattering, where resonances of 16O in the quantum states Jρ =0+, 1−, 2+, 3−, and 4+ are located. The parameters of these resonances are accurately determined, as well as the corresponding S-matrix residues and Asymptotic Normalisation Coefficients, relevant to astrophysics. The method is also applied to dα scattering to determine the bound and resonance state parameters, corresponding S-matrix residues and Asymptotic Normalisation Coefficients of 6Li in the 1+, 2+, 3+, 2−, and 3− states. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2020. / National Research Foundation (NRF) / Physics / PhD / Unrestricted

Rotational polarisation effects in the inelastic collisions of NO(X) and Ar

Hornung, Balázs January 2013 (has links)
Rotational polarisation effects have been investigated in the rotationally inelastic collisions of NO(X) and Ar by means of theoretical and experimental methods. Rotational polarisation describes the correlation between the <strong>k</strong>–<strong>k'</strong>–<strong>j'</strong> vectors, that is the initial and final relative velocities of the colliding partners and the final rotational angular momentum of the diatom, respectively. The simplest types of polarisation are the rotational orientation, or preferred sense of rotation, and the rotational alignment, or preferred plane of rotation. They are quantised by the renormalised polarisation dependent differential cross sections (PDDCSs) In this thesis the theoretical methods included exact quantum mechanical, quasi- classical trajectory and Monte Carlo classical hard shell calculations. Various features of the interaction potential influence differently the polarisation dynamics. The effects of attraction and soft repulsion were elucidated employing a number of differently modified potentials. The rotational alignment is primarily determined by a classical impulsive, or hard shell mechanism at a collision energy of 66 meV. The attractive and soft repulsive forces only perturb this underlying mechanism. On the other hand, the parity dependent oscillations of the open shell alignment moments are due to differences between the quantum mechanical differential cross sections. It has been shown the bigger the well depth compared to the collision energy, the less applicable becomes the classical hard shell model to describe rotational alignment. The quantum mechanical rotational alignment in the collisions of hard shells was also calculated. The classical and quantum mechanical hard shell models predict different rotational alignment. Nevertheless, the classical alignment is a good approximation to the exact quantum mechanical results. The rotational orientation is much more sensitive to the details of the interaction potential. It does not exist in the classical description of hard shell collisions, if the system exhibits certain symmetry properties. The attraction and finite range repulsion break this symmetry and leads to the molecule having a preferred sense of rotation. In general there is non-vanishing rotational orientation in the collisions of a hard shell in the framework of quantum mechanics. This is due to the finite spatial and temporal interaction of the colliding partners. Quantum mechanical interference effects also play an important role in this phenomenon. The rotational alignment was experimentally determined in the collisions of NO(X) and Ar at collision energy of 66meV with a hexapole state selective ion-imaging apparatus. An algorithm was developed based on the Fourier moment analysis to extract rotational polarisation information from the experimental ion images. It is fast and robust and can also be of used to simulate experimental images. This algorithm was used to retrieve the experimental renormalised PDDCSs ion images. The measurements confirmed that a classical, impulsive dynamics is mainly responsible for the rotational alignment in these collisions.

Thom, Jacobus D. (Jacobus Daniel) 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Physics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this thesis is threefold. Firstly, I give an overview of non-commutative quan- tum mechanics and build up a description of non-commutative piecewise constant poten- tial wells in this context. Secondly, I look at some of the stationary properties of a finite non-commutative well using the mathematical tools laid out in the first part. Lastly, I in- vestigate how non-commutativity affects the tunneling rate through a barrier. Throughout this work I give the normal commutative descriptions and results for comparsion. Idelon-Riton, Guillaume 06 July 2016 (has links)
Depending on difficulties encountered, we could generalize this to Kerr-Anti-de Sitter. We'll try to give a precise mathematically rigorous description of the Hawking effect either in the the Schwarzschil-Anti-de Sitter or the Kerr-Anti-de Sitter setting

\"Evoluções discretas em sistemas quânticos com coordenadas não-comutativas\" / Discrete evolutions in quantum systems with noncommutative coordinates

Martins, Andrey Gomes 11 August 2006 (has links)
Essa análise é baseada na aproximação de Born para a matriz de transição / We study the nonrelativistic Quantum Mechanics of physical systems characterized F(Q) X \"A IND.\"teta\"\"(R X \"S POT.1\"), by the presence of an extra degree of freedom which does not commute with the time coordinate. In the language of Noncommutative Geometry, we deal with systems described by an algebra of the form F(Q) X \"A IND.\"teta\"\"(R X \"S POT.1\"),, where F(Q) is the algebra of functions over the usual con¯guration space \"Q\" e \"A IND.\"teta\"\"(R X\"S POT.1\") is a deformation of F(R X \"S POT.1\"), known as noncommutative cylinder. From a geometric viewpoint, the generators of the noncommutative cylinder correspond to the time coordinate and to an extra compact spatial coordinate, just like in Kaluza-Klein theories. We show that because of the noncommutativity between the time coordinate and the extra degree of freedom, the time evolution of systems described by F(Q) X \"A_t(R X S 1) is discretized. We develop the scattering theory for such systems, and verify the presence of a new e®ect: transitions from an in state with energy \"E IND.\"alfa\"\" and an out state with energy \"E IND.\"beta\"\" (diferente de \"E IND.\"alfa\"\") are now allowed, in contrast to the usual case. In fact, transitions take place whenever \"E IND.\"beta\" -\" E IND.\"alfa\" = 2\"pi\"/\"teta\"n,, with n \'PERTENCE A\'. The consequences of this result are investigated in the case of a one-dimensional delta barrier. Our analysis is based on the Born approximation for the transition matrix.

Studium časového vývoje metastabilních stavů v kvantové mechanice / Study of time evolution of metastable states in quantum mechanics

Gedeonová, Hedvika January 2019 (has links)
In this thesis, the metastable states are studied. The work focuses on a theoretical model of one or two metastable states decaying into a continuum of states which is bounded from below. We examine the time evolution of such systems and how it is affected by the energy of the metastable state(s) and by the position of the poles of the scattering matrix in the complex plane. We also look closely at the spectral line shape. Numerical integration of a system of differential equations is used for solving the problem of the time evolution and spectral line shape while Freshbach-Fano projection operator formalism is used for finding the position of the poles. The results are compared with first order perturbation theory and with semi-analytical formula obtained from adiabatic elimination of the continuum. The last part of the thesis is dedicated to an application of the model on neon-helium-neon cluster. 1
