Principals in most schools in South Africa have had little or no training in public relations. Since a number of tasks performed by school principals require public relation skills, it is imperative that a significant part of their in-service training should focus on aspects of the practice of public relations. This research aims to highlight the need for such training as principals interact continually with a wide variety of people, circumstances and social settings. Interaction between principals and educators, principals and learners and principals and parents may be pleasant and rewarding or frustrating and lead to conflict. / M

In this study, the purpose is to ascertain the types and media of public-relations programs in effect, to determine the uses being made of these types and media, to evaluate the findings of the methods in use, and to make suggestions and recommendations for an effective public-school relations program in the schools included in the survey.

The purpose of this study is to make a survey over a period of two complete school terms of the public-relations program of Bowie Public Schools, Bowie, Montague County, Texas.

The purpose of this study has three aspects. These are, (1) to determine what constitutes sound public-relations practices as recommended by recognized authorities in this field; (2) to determine the extent to which certain public-relations practices are employed by one hundred Texas public school systems; and (3) to determine whether the public-relations programs of one hundred Texas public-school systems meet the requirements of a sound public-relations program.

In this study the problem may be stated as follows: to determine persistent life situations in a Public Relations Program. The problem involves a survey of school-community-public relations in the areas of family living, recreational living, occupational living and community living as developed in practice and in educational literature; the establishing of sound criteria for such a program; the application of the criteria to the techniques of the program; and the evaluation of the program once it has been established.

The problem involved in this study is an investigation of (1) the part played by the non-professional staff of a school in the development of a favorable public relations program, and (2) the needed training and qualifications for effective performance of the duties of non-professional personnel in this important phase of the public school program.

An experimnental state of development of the Office of Public Relations exists in a few' Seventh-day Adventist colleges as a. result of a partial awakening to the need. A full realization oi' the importance of public relations is lacking as is a standard criteria for the establishment of this office. This is evidenced by the incomplete, and in many cases, complete absence, of public relations programs in these institutions.

The public relations program of any school is vitally important to the success of the total program. As practical psychologists, members of the staff must know and apply the principles of successful public relations. If the public is expected to support the school program, it must comprehend the values and share in its development.
