Embedding an object calculus in the unifying theories of programming

Smith, Michael Anthony January 2010 (has links)
Hoare and He's Unifying Theories of Programming (UTP) provides a rich model of programs as relational predicates. This theory is intended to provide a single framework in which any programming paradigms, languages, and features, can be modelled, compared and contrasted. The UTP already has models for several programming formalisms, such as imperative programming, higher-order programming (e.g. programing with procedures), several styles of concurrent programming (or reactive systems), class-based object-orientation, and transaction processing. We believe that the UTP ought to be able to represent all significant computer programming language formalisms, in order for it to be considered a unifying theory. One gap in the UTP work is that of object-based object-orientation, such as that presented in Abadi and Cardelli's untyped object calculi (sigma-calculi). These sigma-calculi provide a prominent formalism of object-based object-oriented (OO) programs, which models programs as objects. We address this gap within this dissertation by presenting an embedding of an Abadi--Cardelli-style object calculus in the UTP. More formally, the thesis that his dissertation argues is that it is possible to provide an object-based object rientation to the UTP, with value- and reference-based objects, and a fully abstract model of references. We have made three contributions to our area of study: first, to extend the UTP with a notion of object-based object orientation, in contrast with the existing class-based models; second, to provide an alternative model of pointers (references) for the UTP that supports both value-based compound values (e.g. objects) and references (pointers), in contrast to existing UTP models with pointers that have reference-based compound values; and third, to model an Abadi-Cardelli notion of an object in the UTP, and thus demonstrate that it can unify this style of object formalism.

This epistemological regeneration view of the scientific paradigm incorporates the poetic language and sociological analysis, and brings out a complex, open and transdisciplinary narrative. To undertake this exercise as interlocutors we have thinkers like Nietzsche, L?vi-Strauss, Edgar Morin and Bruno Latour, to name a few, and as a reference for analyzing the entire artistic production of one of the icons of Brazilian music, Clara Nunes. It is problematized up in this work, through the singer s discography, lyrics and fragments of her biography, the construction of a social character that politicized culture, increased the mestizo consciousness of popular imagery, and exceeded the excessively prosaic narratives of the academic and scientific culture.

The difficult cultural heritage of psychiatric care

Holmström, Josefin January 2021 (has links)
What values does a state notable building express when it not only represents prosperity values but also carries burdensome memories from people's lives? In what ways does the preservation of a former madhouse/mental hospital affect our understanding of the field of mental illness? This essay intends to research a former mental hospital, located in the city of Vadstena in Sweden, which today operates as a hospital museum. In this study the old mental hospital has been defined as a difficult cultural heritage. Through an architectural analysis of the building together with literature studies from previous work within cultural heritage the study aims to understand how the site today contributes and affects our understanding of mental illness and care. By examining our past from a distinctive perspective the study shows how Vadstena Hospital Museum today plays a significant role in how the psychiatric historical representation is treated and experienced today. Through difficult and complex cultural heritage humans' less desirable actions and events have the opportunity to be seen, heard, felt and discussed from a different perspective.

This study examines similarities between science and theaters, its possible relations with science education, and potentiating role of theatrical language in the construction of less stereotyped images of the scientist and artist. The research also explores the stimulus to the debate on scientific issues, articulated to other knowledge, aimed at students in middle and high school. Among the main objectives of this thesis are: a) analysis of perceptions of the subjects interviewed about the image of the scientist, artist and on notions of arts and sciences; b) Development of theatre play, based on data obtained through questionnaires and research historical, consisting of educational strategy aimed at discussion of science to the arts articulated c) Analysis of the effects of the play by the research participants. For that, 226 students answered the questionnaire, categorized into three groups, namely young artists, young scientists and students from public schools. The group that we called "young scientists" is composed by students from the "Escola Politécnica de Saúde Joaquim Venâncio " (EPSJV) and students who integrate the "Scientific Vocation Program" (PROVOC). In this study the group of "young artists" is composed of students who participate in activities related to theatrical language in two institutions, namely: "Casa das Artes de Laranjeiras" (CAL) and "Colégio Salesiano Santa Rosa." A third group incorporated on our study consisted of students who were not tied to educational institutions, programs or activities for the development of artistic or scientific skills. This group was formed by students of the "Escola Estadual Amaro Cavalcanti" and "Colégio Jean Jaures." Both institutions are public. The first is located in the neighborhood of Largo do Machado, in Rio de Janeiro, and the second in Montreuil, France. The responses were interpreted according to the method of "content analysis", systematized by Laurence Bardin (1978). The fundamentals for writing the play were mainly historical research and data obtained from 226 questionnaires. The plot of the play "Every girl is a queen" is the adventure of two teenagers eager to experience the world and themselves that the picking up in old books, transport to the sixteenth century, in 1582, in England, where they experience everyday time, become friends of the queen and witness an unusual encounter between Galileo Galilei and William Shakespeare. As a pilot study about the effects of the text to the target audience research, two meetings were held in which developed theater games, exercises for approaching the themes explored in the play and answer a questionnaire. Culminating with a dramatized reading of the play, these meetings allowed the identification of strengths and limits of the text as a starting point for discussion about science.

Posvítit si do tmy / Supply Your Own Light

Lukášová, Veronika January 2019 (has links)
My disertation theses explores the intricate relationship between art, science and photography in the framework of the contemporary culture. Clearly outlined research areas open up the subject to a broader theoretical examination to underpin the artistic strategies that can be employed in the practial research. The resulting artwork interprets the domain of particle physics in a series of artworks. First area of the research delves into the domain of images and seeks to understand the relationship between the images of art and science in a broader sense. Second area investigates ambiguous medium of photography as both tool of science and art. Third area is an overview of the history of representation of the subatomic world and issues related to representing what is in fact unrepresentable. Fourth seeks to find epistemic and conceptual connection between art and science and their interdisciplinary dialogue as Sci-Art. The fifth part introduces artworks that reflect the critical egangement with the theoretical research and the scientific method by building the instrument for the observation of the cosmic rays. Sources for the theoretical framework are largely drawn from the academic literature written in the UK and USA where the topics explored in the theses have been studied in depth. The time scope considered in the theses encompasses 1990's of the 20. century up utill the present day.
