Information epidemics and the growth of physics

Tabah, Albert N. January 1996 (has links)
This study examined the prevalence of information epidemics in the physics literature. The primary interest was to find out whether outliers observed on time series charts of literatures are due to information epidemics, whether these epidemics are widespread occurrences in physics, whether literatures showing such rapid growth arise mainly due to the influence of an important work and, if so, what characterizes these literatures. Information epidemics were defined as spurts of growth in the literature of a field that reflect a sudden excitement and increase in activity. It was hypothesized that information epidemics are common occurrences in the growth of the physics literature and that outliers observed during the growth of a field are caused by influential works that attract new workers into it and cause them to publish extensively. Growth spurts where information epidemics lead to a permanent change and the emergence of a new subspecialty are termed knowledge epidemics. / The monthly number of abstracts indexed by each chapter of Physics Abstracts between 1977 and 1987 was plotted on a time series chart and an envelope of +/-3 standard deviations was fitted around the regression line. All spikes that crossed the envelope were considered to be outliers and thus potential information epidemics. The abstracts contained in each outlier were identified in the Science Citation Index and analyzed for spread (corporate sources of authors) and impact (citations). / Results show that information epidemics exist, but they are not widespread. Only four information epidemics were identified in the data. They are in chapters 2 (mathematical methods), 36 (clusters), 73 (heterostructures) and 74 (superconductivity). Only the growth in superconductivity can be considered to be a knowledge epidemic. All four arose due to new instrumentation and/or cheaper materials and are examples of puzzle-generating and enabling science. A second major result was that information epidemics are caused by as well as carried forward by groups of influential works. Third, increased activity in a given field is accompanied by an increase in conference papers. On the other hand, the journal literature of a given field is sufficient to represent the direction of literature, growth accurately. / This work confirms and extends the epidemic model for the growth of literatures by demonstrating that not only does the contagion effect exist in physics but that there is also a catalyst effect present. It provides a statistical description for the growth and decline of fields of research.

An analysis of open access schorlarly communication Tanzanian public universities

Dulle, Wilson Frankwell 08 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate factors affecting the adoption of open access in research activities within Tanzanian public universities in order to device mechanisms of enhancing the use of this mode of scholarly communication. The study adopted the UTAUT model to formulate an open access research model comprising of six constructs and five moderators for guidance of this investigation. A triangulation approach for data gathering was adopted. In the first instance, a semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 398 respondents selected using the stratified random sampling from a population of 1088 university researchers from six public universities in Tanzania. The interview involving 63 policy makers and structured records review were also conducted to complement the questionnaire survey. The descriptive and binary logistic regression statistics of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) were used for data analysis. The study established that majority of the policy makers (90.5%) and researchers (72.1%) were aware of open access. Attitude, awareness, effort expectancy, and performance expectancy were established as the key determinants for researchers’ behavioural intention of open access usage while age, awareness, behavioural intention, facilitating conditions and social influence were found to significantly affect researchers’ actual usage of open access. It was concluded that researchers’ and policy makers’ general perceptions about open access were very positive signifying the acceptance of this mode of scholarly communication in the study area. Current poor research conditions and researchers’ low Internet self-efficacy such as inadequate information search and online publishing skills were cited as the main hindrances for researchers to use open access in scholarly communication. The study recommends institutionalisation of open access publishing in Tanzanian public universities and other similar research institutions so as to improve the dissemination of research output emanating from such institutions. Six areas for further research to establish more insights regarding the feasibility for open access development in the country are also recommended. / Information Science / D. Litt. Phil. Qualidade e visibilidade em duas revistas cientificas bolivianas / Quality and visibility in two Bolivian Scientific Journals

Abstract: The objective was to understand and to analyze the quality and visibility of two scientific journals Bolivian: The Bolivian Physics Journal and Ecology in Bolivia journal. The research attempted to answer the following questions: 1st) Does the scientometric proposal helps to analyze the visibility of the journals? 2nd) Do the regional experiences (mainly Latin American ones) offer inputs to support this analysis? 3rd) Does the Bolivian context benefits or hinds the development and visibility of the publications? 4th) Finally, do Bolivian journals fulfill the minimum criteria of quality in the regional context? Among the main results, it stands out that, despite the scientometrics model is valid and it guides a lot of the studies related to the quality and visibility, it does not permit (through its two main mesures: citation and impact), to understand the situation of the scientific production in Bolivia, due to the low presence of publications at international, regional and local indexes. Besides, there exists ignorance about the importance of being part of the international records and there is also a poor developed scientific culture at the academic spaces of the country. About the Bolivian context conditions for the production of scientific magazines, it can be concluded that the development and the survival of the great majority of the journals has been hindered, mainly by financial problems, the low priority given to the issue from the national public policy and because some factors related to the editorial production process. Finally, the scientific magazines analized fulfill the majority of the norms and visibility criteria, being necessary to promote its value and integration into the national context and the visibility into the international scope. The methodology used in the study was qualitative, based in documental review and interviews. This methodology includes also criteria for the selection and the extrinsic and intrinsic analysis of the Bolivian scientific journals. / Doutorado / Politica Cientifica e Tecnologica / Mestre em Política Científica e Tecnológica
