Walter Scott e Balzac: romancistas da história / Walter Scott and Balzac: history\'s novelistsFrattini, Paula Caldas 04 November 2010 (has links)
Walter Scotts name is repeatedly mentioned in the works of Balzac, mostly in his critical writings. This dissertation aims to show, beyond the writers patent admiration, Balzacs penetrating criticism of the Scottian novel which disclosed to him a sound basis for the composition of his Comédie Humaine. Having Scotts and Balzacs critical writings as our object of study mainly their prefaces - we intend to demonstrate how the incorporation of History by the novel became the essential element in this comparative study of the two writers. Our purpose is to elucidate how this intersection between history and literature is articulated in the narrative.

bastante simple. / Tesis

Adult ESL learners reading and discussing The great Gatsby: literary response to and perception of reading and discussing a narrative novel written in EnglishChu, Hyung-Hwa, 1972- 29 August 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine how adult students in a reading class offered in a college-affiliated ESL program responded to The Great Gatsby (Fitzgerald, 1925; GG, afterwards) in small group book discussion sessions over eight weeks, and how they perceived their reading and discussing experiences. Analysis of students' literary responses demonstrated students' strategies in constructing textual meaning and transformation of their meaning-making strategies across time. Students in this study made sense of the text by making connections between the textual world and the text, themselves, and the world around them. Students also brought into discussion their reading experiences and a critical approach to the text. The percentage of comments devoted to each response category illustrated the changes in the focus of discussion and meaning making strategies across time. Taking up the novel, initially students spent more time discussing the historical context of the text and formulating connections with themselves and the world. Students were self-conscious about their reading difficulties. Further along in their reading, as they derived more information from the text, their discussion became more text-centered. Inferential comments and emotional reactions became more frequent elements in discussion, and talk about the reading experience itself and contextual information about the text diminished. Perceptions expressed about their reading experience of the literary text in their second language were predominantly about the enjoyment of reading and challenges and rewards in terms of: 1) language challenges, 2) culture challenges, and 3) literary challenges. Analysis of students' perceptions of their experiences in literary discussion as they read GG revealed their enjoyment of discussions and appreciation of how literary discussion had enriched their interpretation of the novel by providing opportunities for: 1) checking up on the textual information, 2) exchanging opinions, and 3) building a sense of learning community. / text

The novel of manners in France (1820-1855) : from historical novel to realistic novelGendrel, Bernard 26 November 2010 (has links)
After having distinguished three explicative aspects of the novel (the psychological, social and plot-driven aspects) and defined three corresponding types of novels (novels of characters, manners and plot), this work focuses on the novel of manners during the Bourbon Restoration and the July Monarchy. Heir to quite an old tradition, this genre is at its peak with the Scottian historical novel and the novel of contemporary manners of the 1820’s. Balzac, first influenced by the novel of manners, develops in The Human Comedy a hybrid form (combining social and psychological aspects, novel of characters and novel of manners), which we may call the realistic novel (characterized by an overloading of verisimilitude). This definition of realism does not erase the differences between the authors; it allows, on the contrary, to appreciate the specific poetics developed by Stendhal, George Sand or Champfleury.

Winfield Scott and the Sinews of War: the Logistics of the Mexico City Campaign, October 1846--September 1847Miller, Roger Gene 05 1900 (has links)
This study analyzes the procedures and operations of the Quartermaster, Ordnance, Commissary, and Medical Departments during Scott's campaign to determine the efficiency of the prevailing logistical system. Unpublished and published government documents, official records, manuscript collections, memoirs, diaries, and newspapers provide the data. The first chapter describes the logistical departments interworkings; the remaining chapters detail the operations of the bureaus during the expedition's assembly and campaign against Mexico City. The evidence revealed organizational deficiencies which caused severe shortages, particularly in transportation, for Scott's army. The shortages severely hampered the expedition. Because of .the numerous victories over 'Mexican forces, however,. American leaders ignored the organizational deficiencies, These shortcomings reappeared to .impede operations during the Civil War.

An American Eve : the construction of a modern revisionist heroine in Kate Chopin's "The awakening", Ernest Hemingway's "The sun also rises" and F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The great Gatsby"Guay-Weston, Jennifer Ann 20 April 2018 (has links)
