Metaphors from Quantum Physics: Enhancing Ecological L2 Social Networking in an Intermediate Italian Course

This dissertation discusses a case study of the pedagogical uses of social media as part of a larger ecological framework for language learning and critical discourse studies that was conducted during the spring 2014 semester of intermediate Italian. It was organized to balance postmodern theories with metaphors drawn from quantum physics. Every aspect of the course, and each interaction outside of class (including multimodal online resources), avoided the cause-and-effect approach often found in task-based and computer assisted language learning. Second language learners adapted to the paradoxical engagement of language and identity as simultaneous process and product, while reducing neither to fiction. The study broadly adapted a socio-cognitive-ecological approach (Larsen-Freeman, 2012) to shift the focus from differences in technology or method to the participants' perception of human possibilities through the affordances of technology. Participants were trained to navigate dynamic levels of ambiguity and possibilities of meaning while facing the static requirement by the academic institution to pass quizzes and exams, and complete homework assignments on the basis of a 'correct' answer. Recent studies in quantum physics and consciousness provided an elegant model that allows for the coexistence of seeming opposites. Agency, which was central to the participants' experience of discovery and play with variants within the elusive 'standard', allowed for conformity to, or deviation from, the collective. Data collection and analysis adapted 'system analysis' so that interpretation was within a more contextualized understanding of the emergence of complex systems resulting from self-organization, self-selection and co-evolutionary symbiosis. Adaptive teaching was used to meet the needs of the participants by beginning with outcomes and then working backward to explore why certain approaches, tools and tasks were, or were not, effective. The insights gleaned from the study demonstrate that higher levels of critical L2 discursive analysis enhanced by human-machine interactions do not require relegation to upper level division SLA courses. The participants' self-selected samples of their work reveal a story that is complex, dynamic and very human, told through the voices of those most often ignored in the processes of language planning, assessment and curriculum development.

Energy Conservation Theory for Second Language Acquisition (Ect-l2a): A Partial Validation of Kinetic Energy– Aptitude and Motivation

While language aptitude and motivation are considered to be important contributors to second language (L2) attainment, two major gaps in the past research have been (1) a lack of nonlinear models stemming from a naïve and tacit assumption that learning outcomes are linearly related to their predictors, and (2) a lack of unified and integrative understanding of key individual differences (ID) variables (Dewaele, 2009; Larsen-Freeman, 1997). Despite changes in conceptualization of language development as a dynamic system comprised of nonlinear and interconnected subsystems (e.g., CDST), an integrative understanding of ID variables in L2 acquisition remains lacking. The purpose of this dissertation study was to examine motivation and aptitude and their relationship to second language acquisition. Specifically, the study set out to validate a number of theoretical claims made by energy conservation theory for second language acquisition (ECT-L2A) and its attempt to unify key ID variables under one model (Han et al., 2017a). ECT-L2A predicts, inter alia, that aptitude and motivation are positively related to L2 achievement but their effects diminish with increase in proficiency. This is visually represented as a nonlinear and asymptotic L2 learning trajectory vis-à-vis aptitude and motivation. In the current study, two hundred and three adult Spanish-speaking learners of L2 English (N=203) of wide range of proficiency were measured on their level of aptitude (LLAMA_F), motivation (Attitude Motivation Test Battery) and attainment (grammaticality judgment test). The data were analyzed using correlations (PPMC, partial, dis-attenuated), R-squared measures, and fitted with orthogonal distance regression via total least-squares method. The results of correlation analyses and regression showed that as predicted, aptitude contributed positively towards attainment, but its effect diminished with increase in proficiency. On the other hand, while all participants were motivated to learn, motivation decreased with increases in attainment throughout L2 development. Motivation’s effect on achievement became asymptotic and its contribution towards target language (TL) mastery diminished. When aptitude and motivation were combined as a single unit, the learning trajectory closely resembled the curve predicted by ECT-L2A. Based on these findings, two general interpretations concerning motivation and aptitude were presented: 1) changes in motivation and aptitude with respect to attainment and 2) their differential efficacy towards native-like proficiency during L2 development. Finally, implications regarding the universality and the versatility of ECT-L2A are discussed under the broader call for more mathematical models in future SLA research.

Acquisition of Chinese Measure Words by Chinese as Second Language Learners: A Corpus-based Study of Lexical, Semantic, and Syntactic Characteristics

Chinese measure words are bound morphemes that can classify nouns/verbs and form a determinative-measure-word compound with numeral, demonstrative, or specifying determinatives. Dr. Yuanren Chao distributes Chinese measure words into nine categories: individual measure words (Mc), individual measure words associated with verb-object construction (Mc’), group measure words (Mg), partitive measure words (Mp), container measure words (Mo), temporary measure words (Mt), standard measure words (Mm), quasi-measure words (Mq), and measure words of verbs of actions (Mv). The complicated measure word system is a big challenge for Chinese as a second language learners. This study investigates learners’ lexical, semantic, and syntactic characteristics of acquiring Chinese measure words. Learners’ and native speakers’ spoken and written language data are extracted from three authoritative Chinese learners corpora and three authoritative native speaker corpora. Corpus linguistic methods are used in this study. To explore the three linguistic features, this study conducts quantitative and qualitative analyses. The quantitative analysis explores learners’ lexical diversity, sophistication, and accuracy. The findings reveal that learners’ lexical diversity of using measure words is lower than native speakers and English-speaking learners’ is lower than non-English-speaking learners’. Learners’ lexical sophistication of using measure words did not grow with proficiency levels and therefore cannot predict or indicate learners’ language proficiency levels. Likewise, learners’ lexical accuracy of using measure words vary from category to category. Advanced learners have lower accuracy than beginner and intermediate learners, and English-speaking learners are lower than non-English-speaking learners. The qualitative analysis examines learners’ semantic and syntactic behaviors with two case studies. The first case study analyzes nine specific measure words that belong to multiple categories that can reflect learners’ semantic expressions of word choices. The second case study dissects the syntactic structures of ge ‘an individual,’ zhong ‘kinds, species,’ and xie ‘some’ (they are the three most frequent measure words used by learners) and explores learners’ co-selection of determinatives, measure words, and nouns. The results of the first case study show that learners’ semantic expressions are not controlled by the frequency of semantic categories but are likely affected by a topic/genre. The second case study indicates that learners tend to overuse or underuse special grammar patterns without understanding correct usage. The whole study aims to bring attention to Chinese measure words in second language teaching and corpus linguistic methods as teaching and research tools. It will help second language teachers and linguists to gain a deeper understanding of how learners would grasp a classification system and their linguistic characteristics of acquisition.
