Disserta??o (Mestrado) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Produ??o Vegetal, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2011. / ABSTRACT In Brazil the Cactaceae is represented by 160 species from which 26% occur on the rocky fields. Cipocereus minensis is an endemic Cactaceae from the rocky fields in the Minas Gerais? portion of the Espinha?o chain. In this research it was intended to evaluate the rhythms of flower and fruit production of the species, its floral and reproductive biology, and also know the floral visitors and the likely seed dispersers, in an area of the rocky fields of the Diamantina ? MG?s plateau. Seed germination tests have been performed and the initial plant growth on different substrates was analyzed. The species had floral traits such as nocturnal anthesis, white flowers, abundant volume of nectar and rigid perianth structures that suggested pollination by bats. However daily visitors as hummingbirds were also observed. The reproductive system of C. minensis is alogamic and self incompatible and the night visitors were more efficient than the daytime ones in the formation of fruits. The phenologic pattern of flowering and fruiting is sub-annual, with peak of flowering at the beginning and middle of the dry season, in april and july, respectively. Another peak was observed in the wet season in november, with lower production of flowers, but with a higher flower/fruit conversion rate . C. minensis is well adapted to the climatic seasonality. The fruits showed significant differences with respect to collection time for the length, diameter and weight, with higher measures in the wet season. The average number of seeds per fruit was 958.63 ? 369.35, the weight of 1000 seeds was 0.53 g and the mean length of the seeds was 1.5 mm. The highest germination rates were found after nine and twelve months of storage (75% and 72%, respectively) or in fruits collected with a more advanced stage of ripening (72%).In the initial growth the plants showed a higher diameter and height on the substrate prepared in the ratio 1:1:1, composed of sand, red soil and cow dung. The store promotes germination, but also in fruits collected in a more advanced stage of maturation. Substrates with better drainage and aeration favoring better initial development of this plant species. This information will provide subsidies for the development of strategies of conservation and management of the species.

Bemisia argentifolii. / ABSTRACT The study had two objectives compare the levels of whitefly resistance of improved tomato lines rich in acylsugars (AS), zingiberene (ZGB) or 2-tridecanona (2-TD), and check whether the selection of strains based on their density of glandular trichomes is effective in promoting satisfactory levels of resistance to whitefly. These strains were obtained by successive backcrossing to tomato Solanum lycopersicum from the interspecific cross S. lycopersicum x S. habrochaites var. glabratum 'PI 1344171'. Lines rich in AS (TOM-687), ZGB (ZGB-703) or 2-TD (TOM-622) were tested for levels of resistance to Bemisia argentifolii. Two lines (TOM-584 and TOM-679) with normal levels of all three allelochemicals, and the wild accession PI 134417 (AS-rich), were used as checks. TOM-622, ZGB-703 and TOM-622 showed decreased ovopositioning and lower number of nymphs 23 days after infestation, when compared to the checks TOM-584 and TOM-679. All three strains rich in allelochemicals showed higher levels of pest resistance, than the cheches, but did not differ significanthy from each, and either reject significantly among themselves in resistance other in their levels of resistance. The results show that strains of tomato rich in AA, ZGB or 2-TD are effective alternatives to direct selection for resistance to Bemisia argentifolii. All the strains selected for greater trichome density except BPX-365F-751-05-01-03, showed number of nymphs lover than the susceptible checks (TOM-584, TOM-679), indicating that selection towards higher glandular trichome densites was effective in promoting increased in levels of resistance to the whitefly.

The selection of genotypes was based on methods of adaptability, as produced by the harmonic mean of genetic values (MHVG); of stability, as produced by the relative performance of genetic values (PRVG); and on a joint selection for both adaptability and stability, as produced by the harmonic mean of the relative performance of the genetic values (MHPRVG). The genetic correlations were estimated (rG), phenotypic (rF) and environment (rE) for each environment. The following traits were evaluated: fruit number (FN); total cumulative productivity (TCP); fruit mass (FM); fruit length (FL); fruit diameter (FD); peel mass (PM); peel thickness (PT); pulp mass (PUM); juice yield (JY); soluble solids (SS); titratable acidity (TA); and SS/TA (RATIO). The estimates for heritability and the genetic gains in the evaluated environments were found to have good perspectives for the selection of superior genotypes, except for traits TCP, SS, and JY. There was a marked effect from the genotype x environment interaction (GxE) for most traits, except for FL, JY, SS, TA, and SS/TA. The most stable and adaptable hybrids in the evaluated environments were BRS Gigante Amarelo (BRS Yellow Giant), HFOP-09, H09-09, GP09-02, GP09-03, and BRS Sol do Cerrado (BRS Sun of Cerrado). In 88.88% of cases the estimates of genotypic correlations were higher than phenotypic in the three environments. In Len??is genotypic correlations between FN x FM, FD, PT, PM, PUM, SS and TA, differed from the other environments. In Dom Basil?o and Rio de Contas to TCP correlated positively with FM, FL, FD and PM. In all environments the selection of fruits with higher FM facilitating higher LF, FD, PM and PUM and the selection of the oval thinner peel fruit shape. In general, for correlations between traits of agronomic importance, such as FN x TCP, SS; FM x FD, PM, PUM, RATIO; FD x FM, PUM, RATIO; FL/FD x PT e FM x RATIO showed the same behavior in the three evaluation environments, except for characteristics FN x FM, FD, PT, PM, PUM e TA in Lenc?is.
