Increasing the movement of care home residents to independent living

Kusick, Anna L. 01 January 1976 (has links)
The present study utilized a model apartment as a transitional facility in conjunction with exposure-sampling to increase the movement of care home residents to independent living. A model apartment is oen set up with all items necessary for everyday living, including dishes, pots and pans, bedding, cleaning articles, etc., which serves as an example of what the client might live in were he to move to his own apartment. Little or no work has been done on the use of a model apartment as a transitional facility. Though the Fountain House program has apartments for their clients, they do not have a program to allow the clients to spend a finite amount of time in an apartment to adjust to independent living before making the full commitment of renting their own apartment. Exposure to and sampling of reinforcers was investigated as a means to maintain the return of clients to spend increasingly longer periods of time in the model apartment and to investigate whether the exposure to and sampling of reinforcers for living in an apartment would facilitate the clients’ movement out of the ecare homes and seeking of their own apartments.

A comparison of self-help lower-income housing in community-based and individualistic settlements in urban Mexico

Burnham, Richard A. 03 August 2007 (has links)
This study compares housing in two lower-income self help settlement types -- community-based and individualistic -- in two contemporary Mexican urban settings: Mexico City and Tlalnepantla. The research investigates differences in housing design preferences of occupant-builders, reflections of these preferences in built environments, and resulting housing consolidation levels. Of seven elicited housing design preferences investigated, only one suggests statistically significant differences between settlement types in both cities. Community- based settlement respondents tend to prefer an ideology for minimal and equal housing for alIi while individualistic settlement respondents, in contrast, focus on individuals' economic problems in securing private housing. Analyses of the two built environment types show design preference differences reflected in built housing. / Ph. D.

A permanência da autoconstrução: um estudo de sua prática no Município de Vargem Grande Paulista / The permanence of self-help housing: a study of this practice in Vargen Grande Paulista city

Balthazar, Renata Davi Silva 27 April 2012 (has links)
The dissertation deals with the self-help housing, raising aspects that contextualize their emergence and development in Brazil, having as objective the study of this practice today. The aim is an overview of this type of access to housing, the socioeconomic implications, the technical characteristics, program and materials. The empirical approach focuses on self-help housing in Vargem Grande Paulista city, located on the western of the Região Metropolitana de São Paulo. The unit of study is characterized by a resident who designed and built his own home, without assistance of architect or civil engineer. Through empirical research, according to the parameters of qualitative research, purposed to check the requirements stated by the residents and also to identify unexpressed needs. The examination of the causes and effects of the practice of self-help housing, the characterization of this process and the knowledge of the difficulties faced by residents in home ownership, subsidized discussion and analysis of new forms of action.

Selection model to choose innovative building systems for progressive housing with special reference to Metro Manila, Philippines

Astrand, Rachelle Navarro January 2002 (has links)
A crucial factor to enable low-income families to participate in the gradual development of their homes is to find a link between their building activities and those of the large-scale building sector. Amidst technological development and increasing demand for housing, the large-scale sector, such as government and private groups, resorted to industrialised housing to replace traditional and conventional building materials and methods. Industrialisation, however, resulted not only in expensive and inappropriate dwellings but also eliminated homeowners from the building process and management of their homes. To bring back the homeowners in the building process, the shift was towards the production of small components and partial prefabrication. / Following the same thrust, there have been numerous innovative building systems for housing developed in the Philippines in the last two decades. Private entrepreneurs develop these building systems either promoting locally invented systems or adapting imported versions. Seeing their potentials, government and private groups are trying to employ them in housing. Despite the growing number of the innovative building systems and the interest to use them, their integration in low-income housing is still limited. / Focusing on Metro Manila, the capital region of the Philippines, the thesis aims to develop a selection model for the effective integration of innovative building systems in low-income housing. The process of integration is not simply using the building systems for mass production of houses but also enabling homeowners to utilise, maintain and sustain them. The proposed model involves sets of selection parameters essential at each stage of the housing delivery based on the homeowners' progressive building process and their criteria for choosing building materials for their homes. To facilitate progressive building and enhance the homeowners' initiative to build, the model also includes design strategies when employing new building systems and suggests the necessary channels to ensure the availability of the building systems, technical assistance and information.
