Sensorimotor integration and pain perception: mechanisms integrating nociceptive processing

Gombaut, Cindy 17 November 2021 (has links)
Chronic pain continues to be a prevalent condition in the U.S. costing the healthcare system billions of dollars annually with little success in treatment modalities. The goal of this study was to review nociceptive processing in the context of sensory and motor disorders where chronic pain often appears as a common symptom. An activation likelihood estimate (ALE) meta-analysis was performed on brain coordinates from articles containing sensory disorders (spinal cord injury and amputation) with or without pain performing a movement execution and movement imagery task and motor disorders (Parkinson’s disease and dystonia) performing a movement execution task. Aberrations found in the cortical activity of sensorimotor regions of both sensory and motor disorders suggests these disorders should be studied and treated as a dysfunction of sensorimotor integration instead of solely sensory or motor. Alterations of sensorimotor integration could be the necessary trigger for reorganization of cortical maps that alters nociceptive processing. Furthermore, abnormal activity found in the brain regions of both sensory and motor disorders involved in the cognitive and attentional modulation of pain suggests a once voluntary response has transitioned to a conditioned response that perpetuates the experience of pain.

To study the association between e-cigarettes use and altered taste/smell disorders in the U.S. population

Kaur, Manjinder 26 August 2021 (has links)
METHODS: Data from the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) was analyzed for adults above age 40 with 3669 participants with taste and 3691 participants with smell disorders. Smoking status, based upon the history of smoking in the past 5 days was classified as ‘No tobacco smoking’, ‘E-cigs’, ‘Cigarettes’, and ‘Cigar/Hookah/Pipe’ and ‘Smokeless tobacco’. The outcome measure was having taste disorder or smell disorder determined by answering ‘yes’ to self-reported taste or smell questionnaires respectively. This information was collected by trained interviewers using the Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) system. Chi-square and multivariate logistic regression analyses were done with SAS 9.4 using survey weights to account for the complex sampling design. Odds ratios (OR) for taste or smell disorder to those without the respective disorder were compared within different smoking categories. RESULTS: Individuals with taste disorders were more likely to be Mexican American, 40-49.5 yrs., with a history of persistent cold/flu, dry mouth, or cancer. Both smokeless tobacco (OR =2.59) and E-cig (OR =2.30) users showed significantly higher odds of having taste disorders compared to non-smokers. Participants with smell disorder were more likely to be female, non-Hispanic black/other Hispanics with a history of dry mouth, tonsillectomy, head injury, or sinus infections. For smell disorders, Cigar/Hookah/Pipes showed significantly higher odds compared to non-smokers (OR = 2.13). CONCLUSION: This cross-sectional study suggests that E-cigs use is significantly associated with taste disorders, whereas Cigar/Hookah/Pipe use is found to be significantly associated with higher odds of having smell disorders.

Intérêts de la psychothérapie à médiation sensorielle dans le cadre de la prise en charge des troubles de la relation et de la communication chez des enfants autistes sévèrement déficitaires / Interests of psychotherapy with sensory mediation for the taking care of relation and communication disturbances from autistic children showing intellectual disabilities

Bellusso, Perrine 26 March 2013 (has links)
The first objective was to offer a definite analysis of the theoretical models relating to the etiology of the autistic syndrom, with a very particular focus on the place of sensory features in the autistic pathology. On the basis of this theoretical study, we’ve made the hypothesis that a link could exist between sensory disorders and relation and communication disabilities in the autistic syndrome. Thus, we’ve conceptualized an approach of psychotherapy with sensory mediation, intended for the taking care of relation and communication disturbances from autistic children showing intellectual disabilities. We’ve developed the framework of this approach by combining the theoretical and practical foundations of several sensory mediated therapies. We’ve evaluated the interest of psychotherapy with sensory mediation, within the framework of an applied research program with the Medico-Educational Institute named “Le Rosier Blanc” (Saverne, 67, France). We present the devices of psychotherapy with sensory mediation, as well as the results (qualitative and quantitative).

The relationship between touch sensation of the hand and occupational performance in individuals with chronic stroke

Hill, Valerie A. 11 July 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Stroke is the main cause of disability in the United States. Individuals with stroke commonly report sensory impairment affects their recovery. Motor recovery and sensory impairment are related and impact individuals’ ability to perform valued occupations. Despite the prevalence of sensation impairment after stroke, many occupational therapists fail to include sensation assessment and intervention in treatment planning. The exclusion of sensation in occupational therapy interventions during stroke rehabilitation may be due to the lack of literature supporting the association between sensation and occupational performance. The current study aimed to determine the relationship between touch sensation of the affected hand and occupational performance and satisfaction in individuals with chronic stroke. Using a cross-sectional study design, this study associated factors related to hand sensation and function in individuals with chronic stroke. Fifty individuals with chronic stroke participated in a one-time testing session in which assessments related to sensation, movement of the hand and engagement in daily activities were administered. Correlation analyses were utilized to determine relationships between touch sensation of the affected hand with individuals’ abilities to engage in valued daily activities, arm and hand disability, and manual abilities. The main finding of the study was that individuals with intact sensation reported greater ability to perform valued occupations and satisfaction with their performance, as compared with individuals with touch sensation impairment. For individuals with impaired touch sensation of the affected hand, impairment of touch sensation of the hand did not correlate with individuals’ performance or satisfaction with valued occupations, arm or hand movement, or manual abilities. Collectively, the results of this study reflect the complex interaction between touch sensation, occupational performance, motor functioning, and manual abilities of the affected hand for individuals’ who have experienced a stroke. This study informs therapists, rehabilitation scientists, and other healthcare professionals that client-centered, individualized approaches, including a wide array of clinical assessments and intervention, including assessment of occupational performance and sensation, remain important components in stroke rehabilitation.
