Urban Sustainability in Transformation: A Case Study of Seoul

Jung, Yoonhee January 2018 (has links)
While cities across the world are adopting urban sustainability plans and pursuing ‘sustainable development,’ the question of how these urban sustainability plans have made our cities indeed sustainable is a subject of debate. Some scholars are skeptical about whether urban sustainability planning challenges or reproduces existing power imbalance in the growth politics in cities. Given the current trend that the concept of sustainability has become embedded in our culture, little is known about the urban politics around urban sustainability plans and their effectiveness in promoting balanced sustainability in Asian cities. Using a case study of Seoul through in-depth interviews, this study examines the urban politics around the decision-making process and the implementation of sustainability plans in Seoul. As a rare case of recent rapid socio-economic transformations with the legacy of a developmental state, Korea serves as an example of how these transformations are likely to have for the urban politics of sustainability policies in other Asian countries. As conclusions, developmental states like Korea with a centralized governance system tend to use a “sustainability fix” that is heavily focused on ‘pro-growth’ development. With globalization, privatization, and democratization, the growth machine politics around urban sustainability planning in Korea is similar to that observed in the Western context. However, in Seoul, the growth machine is heavily influenced by the federal government and Mayoral leadership. This is because of the embedded legacy of the developmental state. In addition, with increased democratization and a growing role of civic groups in urban politics, we see a move towards “just sustainability” in urban sustainability planning in Korea. / Geography

Seoul Grand Park 1984-2015: A Historical Analysis of the Changing Conservation and Animal Welfare Priorities in South Korea

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: This project analyzes the efforts of Seoul Grand Park Zoo (the largest and most important zoo on the Korean peninsula) to develop and achieve the highest standards in conservation, education, animal welfare, and research over the last three decades. Founded primarily as an entertainment venue in 1984, the zoo has struggled to become a scientific center that adequately provides for the animals under its care and promotes the advancement and dissemination of knowledge. Drawing on interviews from zoo officials, academics, conservationists, and animal-rights activists, I explore the animal welfare management and conservation priorities of a prominent Asian institution. Although the zoo has made significant improvements in animal welfare, it remains constrained by limited resources and government indifference. These constraints have also restricted the zoo’s ambition to become a major center for conservation; it currently concentrates on a handful of projects with broad popular appeal. Based on my interviews, greater collaboration, better communication with other researchers, and more systematic sharing of data would be especially beneficial for expanding the zoo’s conservation agenda. As research and conservation become a more prominent part of the zoo’s portfolio, potential conflicts may arise with zoo’s current emphasis on the welfare of the individual animals under its care. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Biology 2015

En studie av hur väderfaktorer påverkar efterfrågan på lånecyklar / A study of how the weather affects the demand for bike-sharing

Liljencrantz, Carl, Grenmark, Nils January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study was twofold: The first part was about analyzing possiblecorrelations between various weather factors and the demand for bike-sharing.The aim of the study was to investigate how the relationship between theseexplanatory variables and the response variable looks like. To investigate this, regression analysis was used where a multivariate linear model was built basedon real data. The study was based on the city of Seoul, where the city’s bike-sharing and weather data were used. What the study found was that all weatherfactors were statistically significant with the demand for bike-sharing and therelationship between them was exponential. The relationship was positive forthe weather factors temperature and visibility while the remaining, i.e. weatherfactors, humidity, wind speed, solar radiation, rain and snowfall, had a negativerelationship. The strongest relationship were temperature, humidity and rainwhile the weakest were wind speed, snowfall and visibility. In the second part of the study a market analysis for bike-sharing was carried out. Also in this part, the city of Seoul was in focus. Within this market analysis, amongother things, the market situation, competing services, strengths and weaknessesswere analyzed. The conclusion based on this analysis is that the market for bike-sharing is complex and includes many factors. It has also shown that a city likeSeoul has succeeded in introducing bike-sharing despite many challenges. Finally, the study has shown that bike-sharing is a growing market that will become evenmore relevant in the future.

Korean EFL learners' knowledge of semantic, morphological, and syntactic properties of English verbs: the relationships of lexical and grammatical knowledge

Shin, Chang Won, 1972- 28 August 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between lexical and grammatical knowledge in the L2 acquisition of English by Korean EFL learners by examining how the depth of lexical knowledge that Korean learners have about English verbs is related to their grammatical knowledge. For this study, L2 research into depth of lexical knowledge and generative syntactic theory have been reviewed to suggest the interdependent nature of vocabulary and grammar in L2 acquisition (Nation, 1990, 2001; Chomsky, 1981, 1986, 1995; Herschensohn, 2000). Data were collected from Korean EFL learners through a depth of vocabulary knowledge test which focused on semantic, morphological, and syntactic properties of English verbs and a grammar test. The results showed that there was a high positive correlation between vocabulary and grammar knowledge in L2 English acquisition by Korean learners, and that semantic, morphological, and syntactic properties of lexical knowledge all contributed to the prediction of L2 learners' grammatical knowledge. In particular, the syntactic property of lexical knowledge was found to be the most important predictor of grammatical knowledge. However, it was also found that the morphological property was not as important in the prediction of L2 grammatical knowledge as the syntactic property. Based on these findings, it was argued that the in-depth view of L2 lexical knowledge might be appropriate for explaining the interdependent nature of lexical and grammatical knowledge, since this in-depth perspective sees lexical knowledge as consisting of various properties such as semantic, morphological, and syntactic features. On the other hand, a generative view on syntax also seems to provide an account of how each property of lexical knowledge would be related to overall grammatical knowledge. Thus, the syntactic property of word knowledge such as argument structures and subcategorization frames might serve as a connector which links lexical and grammatical knowledge. Finally, some possible accounts of why the morphological property of vocabulary knowledge did not contribute as much to the prediction of L2 grammatical knowledge as the syntactic property were provided on the basis of the notion of argument structures, the characteristics of morphological knowledge assessed by the in-depth vocabulary test, and L2 lexical development model proposed by Jiang (2000).

Healing Architecture: exploring own mind and emotions in inner city of Seoul

Kim, Min-Joo January 2017 (has links)
Thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree of Master of Architecture (Professional) to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, School of Architecture and Planning at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2017 / The world is changing fast in every fi eld of technology. As technology rapidly develops, humans need to adapt to excessive learning and work loads, in order to meet the current society demands. Extreme stress accumulates, and nega vely aff ects peoples’ physical health. Stress causes many mental illnesses as well. However, many people avoid going to mental hospitals, because of the s gma or the nega ve stereotype associated with mental illness. Therefore, people try to relieve their stress in physical ways by exercising, travelling, or partaking in other leisure ac vi es. They use psychology, religion, therapy, or medita on to relieve their stress. Today, in South Korea, many people work long hours into the night and on the weekend. Many of these people cannot aff ord treatments that relieve stress, because they do not have the me or the money. Most South Koreans spend their days in their work space. In a highly compe ve work environment and networking environment created by social media, the South Korean people lose self-esteem. People blame the social structure and hierarchy for the defec ve working culture. People get depressed or lose their self-esteem by being submissive, rather than fully expressing their opinions especially regarding the ruling class. As a result, many people plan or consider emigra ng. South Koreans, o en forget or lose their iden es and essen al quali es. This document suggests that an urban medita on centre should be built close to the business districts in South Korea. People could visit the centre whenever they need a break from their tough working environment. Visitors to the medita on centre would use all their senses to feel alive, and to realise and reaffi rm their existence. Through this sensory experience, they would also be able to meditate and fi nd inner peace. This report aims to research how architecture can help to release stress in an urban context and how this space could enhance peoples’ various sensory experiences. Healing architecture explores all the human senses using the theory of phenomenology / XL2018
