Distributed Search in Semantic Web Service Discovery

This thesis presents a framework for semantic Web Service discovery using descriptive (non-functional) service characteristics in a large-scale, multi-domain setting. The framework uses Web Ontology Language for Services (OWL-S) to design a template for describing non-functional service parameters in a way that facilitates service discovery, and presents a layered scheme for organizing ontologies used in service description. This service description scheme serves as a core for desigining the four main functions of a service directory: a template-based user interface, semantic query expansion algorithms, a two-level indexing scheme that combines Bloom filters with a Distributed Hash Table, and a distributed approach for storing service description. The service directory is, in turn, implemented as an extension of the Open Service Discovery Architecture. <br /><br /> The search algorithms presented in this thesis are designed to maximize precision and completeness of service discovery, while the distributed design of the directory allows individual administrative domains to retain a high degree of independence and maintain access control to information about their services.

Modelling User Tasks and Intentions for Service Discovery in Ubiquitous Computing

<p>Ubiquitous computing (Ubicomp) increases in proliferation. Multiple and ever growing in numbers, computational devices are now at the users' disposal throughout the physical environment, while simultaneously being effectively invisible. Consequently, a significant challenge is service discovery. Services may for instance be physical, such as printing a document, or virtual, such as communicating information. The existing solutions, such as Bluetooth and UPnP, address part of the issue, specifically low-level physical interconnectivity. Still absent are solutions for high-level challenges, such as connecting users with appropriate services. In order to provide appropriate service offerings, service discovery in Ubicomp must take the users' context, tasks, goals, intentions, and available resources into consideration. It is possible to divide the high-level service-discovery issue into two parts; inadequate service models, and insufficient common-sense models of human activities.</p><p>This thesis contributes to service discovery in Ubicomp, by arguing that in order to meet these high-level challenges, a new layer is required. Furthermore, the thesis presents a prototype implementation of this new service-discovery architecture and model. The architecture consists of hardware, ontology-layer, and common-sense-layer. This work addresses the ontology and common-sense layers. Subsequently, implementation is divided into two parts; Oden and Magubi. Oden addresses the issue of inadequate service models through a combination of service-ontologies in concert with logical reasoning engines, and Magubi addresses the issue of insufficient common-sense models of human activities, by using common sense models in combination with rule engines. The synthesis of these two stages enables the system to reason about services, devices, and user expectations, as well as to make suitable connections to satisfy the users' overall goal.</p><p>Designing common-sense models and service ontologies for a Ubicomp environment is a non-trivial task. Despite this, we believe that if correctly done, it might be possible to reuse at least part of the knowledge in different situations. With the ability to reason about services and human activities it is possible to decide if, how, and where to present the services to the users. WASP : Lightweight Programmable Ephemeral State on Routers to Support End-to-End Applications

We present WASP (World-friendly Active packets for ephemeral State Processing), a novel active networks architecture that enables ephemeral storage of information on routers in order to ease distributed application synchronisation and co-operation. We aimed at a design compatible with modern routers hardware and with network operators' goals. Our solution has to scale with the number of interfaces of the device and to support throughput of several Gbps. Throughout this thesis we searched for the best trade-off between features (platform exibility) and guarantees (platform safety), with as little performance sacri ce as possible. We picked the Ephemeral State Processing (ESP) router, developed by K. Calvert's team at University of Kentucky, as a starting point and extended it with our own virtual processor (VPU) to offer higher exibility to the network programmer. The VPU is a minimalist bytecode interpreter that manipulates the content of the "ephemeral state store" of the router according to a microprogram present in packets. It ultimately allows the microprogram to drop or forward the packet on any router, acting as remotely programmable filters around unmodified IP routing cores. We developed two implementations of WASP: a "reference" module for the Linux kernel, and, based on that prototype experience, a WASP filter application for the IXP2400 network processor that proves feasibility of our platform at higher speed. We extensively tested those two implementations against their ESP counterpart in order to estimate the overhead of our approach. High speed tests on the IXP were also performed to ensure WASP's robustness, and were actually rich in lessons for future development on programmable network devices. The nature of WASP makes it a platform of choice to detect properties of the network along a given path. Thanks to per-flow variables (even if ephemeral) and its ability to sustain custom processing at wire-speed, we can for instance implement lightweight measurement of QoS parameters or enforce application-specific congestion control. We have however opted -- in the context of this thesis -- for a focus on another use of the platform: using the ephemeral state to advertise and detect members of distributed applications (e.g. grid computing or peer-to-peer systems) in a purely decentralised way. To evaluate the benefits of this approach, we propose a model of a peer-to-peer community where peers try and join former neighbours, and we show through simulations how efficiency and quality of user experience evolve with the presence of more WASP routers in the network.

Design and Performance Evaluation of Service Discovery Protocols for Vehicular Networks

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are gaining momentum among researchers. ITS encompasses several technologies, including wireless communications, sensor networks, data and voice communication, real-time driving assistant systems, etc. These states of the art technologies are expected to pave the way for a plethora of vehicular network applications. In fact, recently we have witnessed a growing interest in Vehicular Networks from both the research community and industry. Several potential applications of Vehicular Networks are envisioned such as road safety and security, traffic monitoring and driving comfort, just to mention a few. It is critical that the existence of convenience or driving comfort services do not negatively affect the performance of safety services. In essence, the dissemination of safety services or the discovery of convenience applications requires the communication among service providers and service requesters through constrained bandwidth resources. Therefore, service discovery techniques for vehicular networks must efficiently use the available common resources. In this thesis, we focus on the design of bandwidth-efficient and scalable service discovery protocols for Vehicular Networks. Three types of service discovery architectures are introduced: infrastructure-less, infrastructure-based, and hybrid architectures. Our proposed algorithms are network layer based where service discovery messages are integrated into the routing messages for a lightweight discovery. Moreover, our protocols use the channel diversity for efficient service discovery. We describe our algorithms and discuss their implementation. Finally, we present the main results of the extensive set of simulation experiments that have been used in order to evaluate their performance.

Design and Implementation of a Service Discovery and Recommendation Architecture for SaaS Applications

Increasing number of software vendors are offering or planning to offer their applications as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) to leverage the benefits of cloud computing and Internet-based delivery. Therefore, potential clients will face increasing number of providers that satisfy their requirements to choose from. Consequently, there is an increasing demand for automating such a time-consuming and error-prone task. In this work, we develop an architecture for automated service discovery and selection in cloud computing environment. The system is based on an algorithm that recommends service choices to users based on both functional and non-functional characteristics of available services. The system also derives automated ratings from monitoring results of past service invocations to objectively detect badly-behaving providers. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach using an early prototype that was developed following object-oriented methodology and implemented using various open-source Java technologies and frameworks. The prototype uses a Chord DHT as its distributed backing store to achieve scalability.

Algorithms for Large-Scale Internet Measurements

As the Internet has grown in size and importance to society, it has become increasingly difficult to generate global metrics of interest that can be used to verify proposed algorithms or monitor performance. This dissertation tackles the problem by proposing several novel algorithms designed to perform Internet-wide measurements using existing or inexpensive resources. We initially address distance estimation in the Internet, which is used by many distributed applications. We propose a new end-to-end measurement framework called Turbo King (T-King) that uses the existing DNS infrastructure and, when compared to its predecessor King, obtains delay samples without bias in the presence of distant authoritative servers and forwarders, consumes half the bandwidth, and reduces the impact on caches at remote servers by several orders of magnitude. Motivated by recent interest in the literature and our need to find remote DNS nameservers, we next address Internet-wide service discovery by developing IRLscanner, whose main design objectives have been to maximize politeness at remote networks, allow scanning rates that achieve coverage of the Internet in minutes/hours (rather than weeks/months), and significantly reduce administrator complaints. Using IRLscanner and 24-hour scan durations, we perform 20 Internet-wide experiments using 6 different protocols (i.e., DNS, HTTP, SMTP, EPMAP, ICMP and UDP ECHO). We analyze the feedback generated and suggest novel approaches for reducing the amount of blowback during similar studies, which should enable researchers to collect valuable experimental data in the future with significantly fewer hurdles. We finally turn our attention to Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), which are often tasked with detecting scans and preventing them; however, it is currently unknown how likely an IDS is to detect a given Internet-wide scan pattern and whether there exist sufficiently fast stealth techniques that can remain virtually undetectable at large-scale. To address these questions, we propose a novel model for the windowexpiration rules of popular IDS tools (i.e., Snort and Bro), derive the probability that existing scan patterns (i.e., uniform and sequential) are detected by each of these tools, and prove the existence of stealth-optimal patterns.

A Service Oriented Peer To Peer Web Service Discovery Mechanism With Categorization

This thesis, studies automated methods to achieve web service advertisement and discovery, and presents efficient search and matching techniques based on OWL-S. In the proposed system, the service discovery and matchmaking is performed via a centralized peer-to-peer web service repository. The repository has the ability to run on a software cloud, which improves the availability and scalability of the service discovery. The service advertisement is done semi-automatically on the client side, with an automatic WSDL to OWL-S conversion, and manual service description annotation. An OWL-S based unified ontology -Suggested Upper Merged Ontology- is used during annotation, to enhance semantic matching abilities of the system. The service advertisement and availability are continuously monitored on the client side to improve the accuracy of the query results. User-agents generate query specification using the system ontology, to provide semantic unification between the client and the system during service discovery. Query matching is performed via complex Hilbert Spaces composed of conceptual planes and categorical similarities for each web service. User preferences following the service queries are monitored and used to improve the service match scores in the long run.
