Cara, Anderson Tiago de. January 2015 (has links)
Abstract: This is study, in first stage, uses documentary-quantitative method and aims to verify from the Epidemiological Monitoring of data query obtained from the Information System database and Notifiable Deseases (SINAN) from 2009-2012, rates of cases of women in situations of violence reported in Bauru/SP. General information regarding the records were collected notified in SINAN, identifying the type of violence, sociodemographic data, the consequences for the victims and referrals made to service agencies, only women aged over 18 years. Data were organized, coded and submitted to Estatistic Binomial test. In the second stage, carried out case studies in order to investigate the experiences of four participants regarding suffered sexual violence and consequences, as well as their perception of the aspects that contributed to the overrun or not this life event. This sample was obtained through hospital records Reference Service and Woman's Center on Violence Situation (CRAMSV) with thirty-two cases have been identified, which, subject to the eligibility criteria and the study resulted in ten cases and these four cases that could participate. The interviews were conducted individually after a call and ethinical procedures, using the Bardin's method (1977) for the analysis of the interviews. Results indicated predominance of physical violence (60.89%) followed by sexual violence (21.14%) and most women had the age of 18, low level of education and that only a minority of cases received appropriate referrals to the network of municipal service. We also observed the lack of follow-up mechanisms of the reported cases. Showed up significant deficiencies in the data record of the reported cases, obscuring the reality of the situation of violence against women, despite the notification by the SINAN. The conclusion is thus that the episode of sexual violence suffered by participants in this study showed physical and psychosocial consequences / Mestre

Discourse analysis of sexual assault trial judgements: causal attributions and sentencing

Coates, Linda Jane 13 July 2018 (has links)
In this dissertation, I examined the construction, function, and consequences of causal attributions in all British Columbia sexual assault trial judgements available through Quicklaw from 1986-1994. Most judgements contained causal attributions, that is, the judge discursively constructed an explanation of the assault. These attributions were analyzable as internalizing versus externalizing (i.e., under the individual's control or not); situating or saturating (i.e., situated in a particular time and place versus abstracted and pervasive), and as violent or nonviolent (i.e., caused by a choice or tendency to be violent versus a choice or tendency to use alcohol, to be sexually inappropriate, etc.). The preponderance of attributions for persons guilty of sexual assault cast the cause as something other than violence. This suggests that, despite laws which defined sexual assault as violent per se, judges are not treating these offenses as violent. These attributions along with two other sets of factors (case parameters identified by Ruby, 1994, and stranger versus nonstranger status) were then tested to determine which factors were related to sentencing. Causal attributions were significantly correlated with sentence. In particular, nonviolent attributions were significantly related to lower sentences. Only the relatively rare violent and internalizing attributions (e.g., "he chose to be violent") were significantly correlated with higher sentences. Most case parameters were either not associated with sentence or were actually correlated in the opposite direction. For example, breach of trust was negatively associated with sentence: judges gave offenders who assaulted children in their care systematically lower sentences. Stranger status was significantly correlated with the offender receiving a higher sentence, even when the stranger had not physically touched the victim. Overall, these findings illustrate the usefulness of examining judges' discourse as well as the facts of the case. When judges discursively constructed an assault as nonviolent, the sentence was lower. When they attributed the assault to violent causes and cast the offender as responsible, the sentence was higher. Moreover, the results suggest that the judges are not dealing with sexual assault and other sexualized offenses in the way that is consistent with the relevant legislative laws and sentencing principles. In particular, the legal system fails to protect children from those charged with their care and protection. / Graduate

A study of eighty-one sexual offenders at Oregon State Hospital

Booth, Eugene Fletcher 01 May 1970 (has links)
This project was conceived at the Psychiatric Security Unit of Oregon State Hospital in 1968-69. The purpose of the study-was to develop a fund of knowledge concerning the Oregon "sexually dangerous" and to emphasize those elements of the subject which require more sophisticated research. It was undertaken with the hope that the information provided would prove of value to the professional and layman in their understanding of sexual offenses against children. The study plan, designed around an investigation of sexual offender characteristics, was submitted to the administrator of Oregon State Hospital, and permission was granted to examine clinical histories of the 81 sexual offenders who had been committed under Oregon Sexual Psychopath Statutes from September 1963, to May 1969. The study design was exploratory and descriptive. Exploratory elements were reflected in the effort to increase the student's familiarity with the subject of child molestation. Description was directed toward a presentation of data in succinct form which would be suitable to later refinement. A schedule of items was developed which included three main areas of inquiry: characteristics of (1) the offender, (2) the victim, (3) the offense. Appropriate sub-items rounded out the instrument. No explicit hypotheses were posed; however, two underlying guiding hypotheses were implicit: (1) Oregon offenders would be similar to other sexual offenders; (2) the traditional view of sexual offenders is unsupported by scientific investigation. Data was compiled over a three - month period and statistics were recorded in tabular form. A breakdown of offender types was employed for clarity. Findings related to the offender indicated a bi-modal distribution of age with the greatest number in the 20 - 29 age class interval and a rather high percentage over 50. All were white males and as many were married as were single. Their educational level was slightly lower than the general population and most did manual work. Social and employment adjustment was manifestly poor. Their psychiatric condition at the time of the current commitment included disorders of the personality for the most part. Many of the offenders had been, discharged at the time of the study; however, there were a substantial number of long-term cases continuing. Victims were predominantly in the 8 ~ 11 age class interval which is comparable with similar studies., The Oregon group .involved higher number of multiple victims than is usually found However, offender-victim relationship was comparable to most offender samples. The concept that a stranger plays a minor role in sexual offenses was not clearly supported by the study. Offenders were not particularly recidivistic prior to the current offense, and none have repeated f0llowing discharge. Contrary to the notion of violent threatening behavior on the part of the offender, findings indicated a very low frequency/with most acts consisting of immature sexual gratification. Victim behavior was not often resistive, mostly consensual, and occasionally inviting. Offenses occurred most frequently in a residence. Duration of the offense was more often single occurrence except in the incest group. Intoxication was present in a minority of offenses but played a major role in certain types of offense. Implications for further research suggest the need for additional empirical studies which will explore the interrelated factors among characteristic items and experimental studies designed to assess the effectiveness of treatment methods.

A profile of rape during residential robberies in Gauteng, South Africa between 2002 and 2012

Chowles, Jacqui 27 July 2016 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters in Community-based Counselling Psychology on 15 March 2016 / Despite the often publicised occurrence of residential robberies being accompanied with additional forms of violence there is a limited amount of research exploring these forms of intersecting violence, specifically within the South African context. The latest statistics released by the South African Police Service (2015) indicate that residential robberies are continuing to increase. The co-occurrence of rape in such residential robberies is under-studied. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore and describe a profile of residential robberies that are accompanied by rape in Gauteng, South Africa between 2002 and 2012. This was done by exploring the temporal, sociodemographic and situational factors related to reported instances of this crime. The study consisted of cases obtained by the Crime Administration System (CAS). The study focused specifically on instances of reported residential robbery, in Gauteng. Overall there were 68178 cases analysed, with 1104 cases containing instances of reported co-occurring rape. The initial descriptive results indicated that specific variables significantly influence the co-occurrence of rape during a residential robbery. Whereby, there has been a significant increase in the proportion of rapes co-occurring within the 2002 to 2012 period Additionally, binary logistic regression analysis showed that Black females between the ages of 12 and 17 years are the demographic group most at risk when other situational factor are additionally present. Other findings of the regression indicate that there is an increased risk of a rape co-occurring during the residential robbery; over the weekend, between the hours of 00:00 and 06:59 and when no firearm is used as the method of entry or during the residential robbery. Overall, the study present significant findings related to this specific co-occurring crime and a number of areas that can be further explored in relation to the co-occurrence of rape during residential robbery and other forms of co-occurring violence, specifically in the context of South Africa

The portrayal of sexual abuse in Zakes Mda's the Madonna of Excelsior and J. M. Coetzee's disgrace : a comparative study

Makgato, Kgokologa Saltiel January 2010 (has links)
Thesis (M.A.(English) --University of Limpopo, 2010. / This dissertation examines the way in which two South African novelists, Zakes Mda and J.M. Coetzee, portray the sexual abuse of women during the apartheid and post-apartheid eras. The two selected novels used in this research are The Madonna of Excelsior (2002) by Mda and Disgrace (2000) by Coetzee. The research, furthermore, analyses the attitudes of the sexual abusers and their victims in both eras as well as examines the effects of socio-economic imbalances that might have prompted the men to sexually abuse women whom they should be offering protection against any form of violence and abuse. The study furthermore identifies and analyses the factors that hinder victims from reporting their sexual abuse to the police. Finally, this dissertation also presents a comparative study of the differences and the similarities between the way the two novelists portray sexual abuse.
