Relationships among human vaginal blood volume, pulse pressure, and self-report of arousal as a function of erotic stimulation

Harris, Ronald George. January 1980 (has links)
Using a photoplethysmograph, vaginal blood volume (VBV) and pulse pressure (VPP) responses of 53 women volunteers were compared and related to immediate self-reports of either sexual or genital arousal. The responses were examined across a sequence of experimental phases and, in one of these phases as a function of high or low erotic stimulus intensity. Results indicated that both physiological and subjective responses were specifically affected by the erotic stimuli. After these stimuli VPP and subjective responses returned to prestimulation levels whereas VBV did not. Intensity of erotic stimulus affected subjective responses but not the physiological responses. Correlations between the measures indicated that VBV and VPP were moderately well correlated at all times but became more so during the high intensity erotic stimulus and when physiological responses were strong. The correlation between physiological and subjective responses was also enhanced during the erotic stimulus phase as a function of both erotic stimulus intensity and strength of physiological response. Following the erotic stimuli, subjective reports of declining arousal were still strongly correlated with VPP but not with VBV. Results were discussed in terms of the nature of the haemodynamic system underlying changes in blood flow and the possible mechanism by which women detect such changes. Four factors shown to influence the correlation between physiological response and self-report (i.e. response change, physiological response strength, particular physiological response, and erotic stimulus intensity) were discussed in terms of this process, and in terms of cognitive variables which may affect subjective judgments of sexual arousal. Methodological and statistical implications of this research were examined, as well as implications for the clinical assessment of female sexual arousal.

Seksuele kindermolestering

Naude, Martin David Jacobus 23 July 2014 (has links)
M.A. / The sexual molesting of children is a phenomenon that can definitely not be ignored. In April 1989 the Minister of Law and Order intimated in his opening address at a symposium that this phenomenon should certainly not be allowed to spread like a cancer throughout. society. In reality the' sexual molesting of children has a long history throughout many centuries. Sexual child molesting is currently prominently in the forefront since the exposure of this phenomenon in 1988. The South African Police have established Child Protection units country-wide to establish a support system with regard to combatting this phenomenon. Two aims of this study are, amongst others, specifically to determine the profile of the child molester and to determine the origin, functioning and procedure of the Child Protection unit of the South African Police. This study is primarily of an investigative nature since it is aimed at obtaining insight and gaining understanding. The study can also be defined as self-initiated research due to the researcher's interest in the phe, nomenon of child molesting as such. The most important methods followed to realize this study were that firstly a thorough literature study was conducted. Secondly, a pilot investigation was carried out by means of a structured questionnaire that was completed by members of the Child Protection unit of the South African Police in Johannesburg. Four questionnaires were completed and in such a way deficiencies could be identified and eliminated. This structured questionnaire was sent country-wide for completion by Child Protection units. Thirdly, observation through participation was applied in that the researcher entered the milieu of the Child Protection unit of the South African Police in Johannesburg. Lastly, information was continuously documented and systematized in the study.

El derecho a la no discriminación por motivo de orientación sexual en la jurisprudencia internacional de derechos humanos

Cuvi Rodríguez, Manuela Soledad January 2002 (has links)

Adolescents’ lived experiences of sexual harassment in the school environment

Morilly, Cheryl J. January 2012 (has links)
Magister Artium (Social Work) - MA(SW) / This study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of adolescents with regard to sexual harassment within the school environment. It was considered in the light of actual cases reported on the Cape Flats in the Western Cape where adolescent girls sought counselling after being sexually harassed over a period of time, and were eventually sexually assaulted on their school grounds, by their peers. A qualitative methodological approach was utilised, and the sample was made up of nine adolescent females and one adolescent male between the ages of 15 and 17 years, who were asked to participate on a voluntary basis. Their selection followed purposive sampling at two selected high schools on the Cape Flats in the Western Cape. The research instrument used was an unstructured interview with an open-ended question to allow the participant to share openly and freely. Sound ethical considerations were taken into account throughout the study. Phenomenology was used as a theoretical framework and the data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The four key themes, or essence of the adolescents’ lived experiences, that emerged for the study were: (1) boys don’t respect girls’ sexuality, (2) boys demonstrate power over girls, (3) girls who are sexually harassed at school are publicly humiliated, (4) reporting procedures at schools are inadequate. From the themes I concluded that for the girls, key principles relating to human rights within the South African Constitution were being violated; namely, the right to non-discrimination, the right to human dignity and the right to a safe school environment. Recommendations were made that address the role of the national and regional education departments as well as that of social workers.

The perception of the effectiveness of sexual education as a means of reducing pregnancies in the Blue Crane Route municipality

Hendricks, Eleanor Alvira January 2013 (has links)
Adolescent pregnancy among students across South Africa is a growing concern. The high incidence of dropping out of school results in greatly diminished chances of success and independence for many. Sex education forms part of the life orientation curriculum, and it has been put in place by the Department of Education as a measure to reduce the prevalence of adolescent pregnancy. Parents of adolescents play a vital role in educating their children on sexual matters, secondary to that is community educations on sexual matters in aid of uplifting communities. The aim of the study was to explore the perception of how effective sex education could be a means of reducing pregnancies in the Blue Crane Route Municipality. To achieve this aim, three objectives and three research questions were articulated. The objectives were to explore the course content of life orientation provided to adolescents, to investigate by questioning adolescents concerning the importance of life orientation in their lives and to examine the factors responsible for the escalation of adolescent pregnancies in the municipality. The research questions were: How adequate was the course content of life orientation in helping adolescents in their sexual lives? How useful was life orientation to adolescent girls? What are the factors that increase the incidence of adolescent pregnancies in the municipality? Qualitative data was obtained through semi-structured interviews; focus group discussions were conducted with students, social workers and life orientation educators and observations made by them were recorded. Data was analysed thematically and was supported by relevant literature. The findings revealed that sex education is not effective in reducing pregnancies in the Blue Crane Route Municipality. The figures for adolescent pregnancy in schools have increased since 2007, when sex education was introduced as part of the life orientation curriculum. Accordingly, it is recommended that the Department of Education should re-evaluate the curriculum and appoint educators who are sufficiently trained in life orientation to make learners properly aware of the consequences of unwanted pregnancies.

Treatment of female sexual dysfunction through the use of symbolic modeling with graduated behavioral tasks

Nemetz, Georgia Helen January 1976 (has links)
Attitudinal and behavioral indices of sexual adjustment and sexual anxiety measures were obtained from twenty-two subjects in order to assess the effects of individual and group graduated symbolic modeling with concurrent behavioral tasks as a treatment, procedure for female sexual dysfunction. All of the women serving as clients had reported severe anxiety towards sexual behavior which precluded their enjoyment of and or engagement in this area. Sixteen of the clients were randomly divided into two groups; one receiving individual treatment and the other receiving group treatment. Treatment consisted of initial relaxation training followed by the viewing of 45 video-taped vignettes depicting various graduated sexual behaviors. Sessions were held twice weekly for approximately two and one-half weeks. The other six women served as a control group and were subjected to identical measurement without the benefit of treatment. Statistically significant decreases in anxiety and increases in behavioral and attitudinal measures were evidenced to the same extent in both treatment conditions; however, a trend towards greater improvement was observed for those' receiving group treatment. Significant improvements appeared simultaneously in all three areas around the third treatment session. These riesults remained stable through the three week follow-up period. The contro clients showed no improvement and trends toward deterioration were evidenced on all three measures. It would appear that graduated symbolic modeling with concurrent behavioral tasks effects positive changes in attitudinal, behavioral and anxiety indices simultaneously. The extent and relevant contribution of these changes during sexual dysfunction therapy requires further investigation including the refinement of behavioral measures and the examination of the effects of time on waiting list clients. / Arts, Faculty of / Psychology, Department of / Graduate
