Syftet med denna studie var att jämföra ensamstående och gifta/samboende mammors syn på arbetsliv, familjeliv och hushåll samt konflikterna mellan dessa. En enkät lämnades till kvinnor på två förskolor och mailades även till en grupp deltagare, varav 64 svarade. Resultatet visade signifikanta skillnader mellan grupperna; ensamstående mammor upplevde större konflikter angående de nämnda områdena än gifta/samboende mammor. Resultatet visade även att ju sämre upplevd ekonomi, desto större konflikter gällande dessa områden. Upplevd ekonomi visade sig vara en viktigare faktor än civilståndet. Stress över sin ekonomi kanske även bidrar till stress på andra områden. Orsaken till att ensamstående mammor upplever mer konflikter kan bero på att de inte har någon att dela ansvaret med när det gäller familj, hushåll och ekonomi.

Psychosocial Work Quality, Work-Family Conflict, and Psychological Distress: A Comparison of Single and Partnered MothersDziak, Ewelin 20 August 2008
Research suggests that single mothers experience poorer mental and physical health than their partnered counterparts. This health differential has been attributed, in large part, to the chronic economic and social stressors to which many single mothers are exposed. Less research, however, has focused on the well-being of single mothers who are employed, despite their growing presence in the Canadian labour force. Using data from a telephone survey of employed parents in a mid-sized Western Canadian city conducted in 2005, the aim of this study was to: (1) compare the mental health of employed, single mothers relative to partnered mothers; and (2) explore the potential role of work-family conflict and psychosocial job characteristics as explanations for any observed differences in psychological distress. Analyses were restricted to 674 employed mothers (438 partnered and 236 single), who were 25-50 years old, with at least one child in the household under the age of 20 years. Bivariate analysis indicated that compared to partnered mothers, employed single mothers reported significantly higher levels of psychological distress, work-to-family conflict and family-to-work conflict. Single mothers were also more likely to be employed in a high-strain psychosocial work environment (i.e., high demand and low control). Multiple linear regression revealed that after adjusting for key sociodemographic characteristics, psychosocial work quality and work-family conflict, single parenthood was no longer statistically significantly associated with psychological distress. These findings suggest that being a single mother in and of itself need not result in poorer mental health, but greater attention needs to be paid to the economic and psychosocial work environment of single mothers, including policies to facilitate work-family balance.

Architectural Technology / The provision of affordable housing for poor and previously disadvantaged South Africans is predominantly focused on legislation, and the development and implementation of national and regional housing policies and programs. Although low-income, single, black mothers (identified as the research group for the purpose of this study) are recognised as a marginalised group, their difficulties in acquiring adequate housing have yet to be properly addressed. This study has three main areas of concern. Firstly, it investigates current housing legislation, programs and practices. Secondly, it analyses the historic and cultural traditions, as well as the socio-economic factors that adversely contribute to the inability of low-income, female-headed families gaining access to housing. Thirdly, a questionnaire survey, conducted among a sample group of women, not only highlights the difficulties they face when applying for housing, but also identifies their specific needs.

Women organizing for women : disjunctures in the consumption and provision of health and wellness services for single mothersReid, Colleen 05 1900 (has links)
Current social services provided in Canada for low-income women are primarily 'crisis management' in
nature as they almost exclusively provide safe housing, adequate nutrition or employment training, and
many are under severe financial pressure due to a shifting public policy. As a result, services offered for
single mothers living below the poverty line rarely deal with health promotion in terms of physical
activity, even though it has been demonstrated that socioeconomic status is a key determinant of health
(Frankish, Milligan & Reid, 1996). Although there are many positive mental and physical health benefits
associated with regular physical activity (King 1991), its organizational context remains problematic for
those who live in poverty and are unable or unwilling to conform to dominant expectations inherent with
the consumption of modern forms of physical activity. A moral reasoning tone pervades prescriptions for
maintaining and improving health, and those unable to achieve and maintain good health are considered
individually responsible, thus obscuring organizational and structural factors that limit involvement.
The purpose of this case study of the YWCA was to examine the provision and consumption of health
and wellness services for low-income single mothers. Research questions were posed in four areas: i) what
meanings do low-income single mothers and YWCA service providers associate with the provision of
health and wellness services; ii) how are health and wellness services located within the political, social
and economic context of the YWCA; iii) are there points of disjuncture between the provision and
consumption of health and wellness services for low-income single mothers; and iv) if points of
disjuncture are uncovered, what are the possibilities for emancipatory change in service provision?
Several bodies of literature were reviewed to inform the study: social construction of poverty,
ideologies of health and physical activity, feminist organization theory, and feminist action research
(FAR). FAR is a research process that merges participatory action research with critical feminist theory.
Key principles of feminist action research include: 1) gender as a central piece to emerging explanatory
frameworks (Maguire, 1987); 2) collaboration and negotiation at all stages of the research process between
the researcher, the service providers and the research participants (Green et al., 1995); 3) empowerment
through giving control of the research process and decision making to the research participant, while
deconstructing the power structures associated with social class (Fals-Borda, 1991; Fawcett, 1991); and 4)
social/organizational action and emancipatory change enabled through the democratic production of
knowledge (Green et al., 1995).
The research methodology involved an examination of:
1) The meanings and experiences of eleven low-income single mothers participating in the FOCUS
Pre-employment Training Program which has a wellness component. The data collection strategies
included focus groups; a validation meeting the original participants; observations during group meetings
and program sessions; and informal discussions.
2) The meanings and experiences of five service providers who were either facilitators of FOCUS or
occupied managment positions in the YWCA. The data collection strategies included one-on-one semi-focused
interviews; observations of program meetings, group and informal discussions; and a final meeting
to discuss potential change.
3) Relevant documents, including brochures, pamphlets, reports and promotional flyers to obtain
background and contextual information about the YWCA.
The data was analyzed using inductive analysis and the qualitative software program, Q.S.R. NUD.IST.
The overall finding was that neither the service providers nor the single mothers viewed wellness as a
priority. At the organizational level, the explanation for this finding was that physical activity
opportunities were not valued by the funders, whereas employment training was their primary concern. The
YWCA's upscale health and wellness services, which offered another opportunity for single mothers to
participate, catered on a fee-for-service basis to middle and upper income women and men and pursued a
market-driven ideology towards service provision, thus making low-income single mothers' involvement
less likely. The social, economic and political context in which FOCUS was situated had a profound
influence on the nature of service delivery, and funding constraints were a source of stress for the service
providers and infringed on the nature and scope of the services offered for the single mothers.
Themes related to points of disjuncture included the service providers' attitudes towards the provision of
health and wellness services. Some providers believed that within the confines of the organizational
structure and the FOCUS program guidelines, the physical activity opportunities offered to the women
were sufficient. Conversely, other providers believed that the organization could take a more active and
critical role in determining routes for change and establishing stronger connections between health and
wellness activities and the other components of the FOCUS program. All of the service providers alluded
to the importance of the women's input and the "organic growth" of the program, however the program's
strict curriculum and scarce evaluations resulted in a non-collaborative approach to service delivery.
From the single mothers' persepctives, stereotypes of the lazy and unmotivated "welfare single mother"
inhited their involvement in community life, including organized forms of physical activity (Fraser &
Gordon, 1994; Lord, 1994; Belle, 1990). The women reported experiences with discrimination, a cycle of
poverty, complications with social assistance, social stigmas, and childcare responsibilities as their major
constraints. Three main reasons for the women's lack of participation were their low sense of entitlement
towards physical activity, their ambivalence towards their bodies, and little access to wellness facilities.
However, involvement in health and wellness activities was a low-priority for the FOCUS participants,
though some of the single mothers mentioned the desirability of incorporating more regular activity
sessions into the FOCUS curriculum.
Other tensions arose between the realities and ideals of feminist organizing. Distinctions based on
class, ethnicity and age separated the upper managerial service providers, the on-site facilitators, and the
women accessing the program, perpetuating an elitist, non-collaborative and hierarchical organizationial
structure.
Based on the single mothers and the service providers' suggestions, four major recommendations for
change were provided. First, the participants should be central to and fully collaborative in the
organizational processes of the YWCA. Second, if the women involved in the program value physical
activity, they should determine ways in which it can become a part of their daily reality. Third, for those
involved with the planning and implementation of the FOCUS program, the role of the funders vis a vis
the needs of the participants should be determined, and a consistent and 'women-centered' approach to
service delivery established. Finally, the YWCA's approach to wellness service delivery should be
evaluated and re-conceptualized so that it fulfills and is congruent with the YWCA mission statement.
What remained unexplored by the service providers was the potential for the women to redefine hegemonic
notions of physical activity (Birrell & Richter, 1987) and to be involved in a meaningful and self-expressive
form of activity (Hargreaves, 1990).
By listening to the various perspectives and situating experiences within the organizational, political,
economic and social contexts, this study provided the beginnings of a critial understanding of the tensions
involved in women organizing for women to promote physical activity.

ALBERTA WELFARE REFORM AND EMPLOYMENT OUTCOMES OF WELFARE RECIPIENTS AND SINGLE-MOTHERSKWAN, ROSITA YI KI 24 June 2011 (has links)
Though the economic literature generally agrees on the positive labour supply effects of welfare reforms in the 1990s; there have been few studies that evaluate how these reforms might have affected employment outcomes of former and potential welfare recipients. This study fills this gap by using the 1993 Alberta welfare reform as a natural experiment. The 1993 and 1994 data from Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics show that welfare recipients and single mothers in Alberta were more likely to participate in the labour force and worked full-time for employers with multiple offices across Canada. Moreover, single mothers received lower wage rates if their employment started after the reform. After controlling for individual heterogeneity; however, single mothers were found to receive higher wage rates and less likely to work full-time. These findings suggest unobservable characteristics are also significant in determining employment outcomes of those affected by welfare reforms.

Do welfare and social service provisions affect the childbearing decisions of Anglophone single mothers living below the low-income level in Montreal? Neoliberal rhetoric has asserted that increased welfare generosity will ultimately breed dependence on social services and propagate a lack of self-sufficiency for single mothers. / Rather than a direct cause-and-effect relationship between welfare generosity and the birthrate of single mothers relying on welfare, my evidence suggests a weak correlation: while these provisions may alter the context in which childbearing decisions are made, they do not solely or primarily determine the outcomes of a pregnancy. By altering the economic context in which childbearing decisions are made, an environment is created that may be supportive of single motherhood to a greater or lesser degree; however this alone will not determine outcomes.

Research has shown that both males and females agree that child-support payments should be consistent. However, census bureau data has indicated that nonpayment of child support is a significant problem in the United States. This study investigated the ways in which females make sense of the phenomenon of child support nonpayment via the construction of personal narratives.Ten adult females were interviewed to obtain stories of child-support nonpayment. The interviews were recorded and transcribed and discrete narratives were isolated for analysis. The constant comparative method was used to compare and contrast the data in order to discover the themes inherent to the process of sense-making through the construction of personal narratives.The analysis revealed three categories of narratives of child-support nonpayment: Action, Coping, and Prescriptive. The findings suggested that each of the categories revealed salient dimensions (i.e., themes) inherent to those categories. Furthermore, these themes were utilized to assign meaning to, and hence make sense of, the experience of child-support nonpayment. / Department of Speech Communication

Most educational reform efforts concerning parental involvement have focused on the involvement of parents from lower socioeconomic status and various ethnic and racial groups, including single mothers across these categories. The purpose of this instrumental case study was to understand how single working Black mothers became involved in their children’s education, the reasons why they were involved, and how they constructed their identity and meaning of an involved parent in their children’s education. Single mothers empowerment through small business development projects in Gweru, Zimbabwe : the case of the GWAPA Poverty Alleviation Programme / Maxwell Constantine Chando MusingafiMusingafi, Maxwell January 2008 (has links)
This study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of the GWAPA Single Mothers Poverty alleviation Programme. The study hypothesized that women in Gweru are among the most vulnerable to poverty and disease and GWAPA project may be an effective source to their poverty alleviation. Main objectives of the study were to explain selected development concepts, to explore the relationship between gender and poverty, to investigate the effectiveness of the GWAPA Programme, to outline the challenges faced by GWAPA, and to offer recommendations based on research findings to help improve the effectiveness of the programme. Both theoretical study and empirical research methods were used to ensure a balanced evaluation of the problem. The theoretical study established that the target population for poverty alleviation and development programmes must be fully involved for development to replace poverty. On average women were found to be poorer than men and hence the need for projects that focus on poverty alleviation among women. In the empirical study 375 of the 1756 GWAPA single women members were used as questionnaire respondents, and 3 management employees were sampled for the interviews. Descriptive survey and qualitative participatory approaches were used as the main research methodologies. This hybrid approach was intended to improve the validity and reliability of the outcome of the study by mitigating weaknesses of different individual approaches. This approach would ensure maximum utilization and involvement of subjects and available resources. Questionnaires, interviews and documentary evidence augmented by the researcher's experience with the NGDO were used as research instruments. Of the 375 Questionnaires distributed, 357 (95%) were collected. Various statistical measures were used to summarize and interpret the data, particularly tables, graphs and charts, actual frequencies and percentage rates. Narrative descriptions were also used to explain given scenarios and relationships. The study established that poverty and development are multidimensional concepts, families headed by women are on average poorer than those headed by men, respondents' lives have changed for the better, GWAPA single mothers have work overload especially considering that as women they shoulder the biggest chunk of the family responsibilities, and most of the GWAPA projects which started well were now suffocating under the current economic hardships.. Main challenges faced by GWAPA include the current political and economic environment, the HIV/AIDS pandemic, the limited educational levels among its members, members' limited access to resources, community cultural biases and negative attitudes towards single mothers and commercial sex workers, government regulation on financial transactions and the amount of cash one should hold outside the banking system, and work overload among members. The study recommends involvement of GWAPA members' opposite sex partners as affiliates, intensive public campaigns, lobbying and advocacy to remove the stigma and negative attitudes towards single mothers and commercial sex workers, improving infrastructure and the GWAPA Farm operations, engaging long term facilitators, certification after attending training programmes, excelling awards, present manuals in mother languages, and alternative fundraising strategies. The government and municipalities are encouraged to invest more in the small enterprise sector as it has proven to have the capability to create employment and develop communities by mobilizing the grassroots. The study also recommends a more detailed and deeper participatory study, related comparative studies that show differences and similarities between related projects in different areas in Zimbabwe, and similar studies on DNGOs that work with both sexes in different areas in Zimbabwe. / Thesis (M.
