TRANSIENT DROOP CONTROL STRATEGY FOR PARALLEL OPERATION OF DISTRIBUTED ENERGY RESOURCES IN AN ISLANDED MICROGRID

Future electric grid will evolve from the current centralized and radial model toward a more distributed one. In recent years, distributed generation (DG) units have been playing an important role in electric generation due to their promising advantages in reducing air pollution, improving power system efficiency, and relieving stress on power transmission and delivery systems. Despite the increased penetration of DG systems, the application of individual DG system always has its limitation such as high cost/W, limited capacity and reliability, and safety concerns. A better way to utilize the emerging potential of DG is to take a system approach viewing generation and associated loads as a subsystem called a “microgrid”. Forming an electric island, the microgrid can work autonomously following a disturbance. In the islanded microgrid, micro sources are responsible for maintaining the voltage and the frequency of the microgrid system within their specified limits and sharing the load between the generators in a stable manner. However, a robust and stable operation of a microgrid depends on a robust control scheme of the microgrid sources. The most common technique to control microgrid sources is based on conventional droop characteristics. Although the conventional frequency/voltage droop technique properly shares a common active load, the reactive power sharing accuracy can be strongly affected by system parameter and active power control. In addition, frequency variations of different sources in transient mode can cause poor active power sharing. To override the above-mentioned problems, a novel frequency/voltage droop scheme is proposed in this thesis. The proposed scheme improves the performance of the microgrid in terms of power sharing and voltage regulation and smooths the system’s dynamic and transient responses. This work has developed the modeling, control parameters design, and power-sharing control starting from a single voltage source inverter to a number of interconnected DG units forming a flexible microgrid. Power System Controller Design by Optimal Eigenstructure Assignment

In this thesis the eigenstructure (eigenvalues and eigenvectors) assignment technique based algorithm has been developed for the design of controllers for power system applications. The application of the algorithm is demonstrated by designing power system stabilizers (PSSs) that are extensively used to address the small-signal rotor angle stability problems in power systems. In the eigenstructure assignment technique, the critical eigenvalues can be relocated as well as their associated eigenvectors can be modified. This method is superior and yield better dynamical performance compared to the widely used frequency domain design method, in which only the critical eigenvalues are relocated and no attempt is made to modify the eigenvectors. The reviewed published research has demonstrated successful application of the eigenstructure assignment technique in the design of controllers for small control systems. However, the application of this technique in the design of controllers for power systems has not been investigated rigorously. In contrast to a small system, a power system has a very large number state variables compared to the combined number of system inputs and outputs. Therefore, the eigenstructure assignment technique that has been successfully applied in the design of controllers for small systems could not be applied as is in the design of power system controllers. This thesis proposes a novel approach to the application of the eigenstructure assignment technique in the design of power system controllers. In this new approach, a multi-objective nonlinear optimization problem (MONLOP) is formulated by quantifying different design objectives as a function of free parametric vectors. Then the MONLOP is solved for the free parametric vectors using a nonlinear optimization technique. Finally, the solution of the controller parameters is obtained using the solved free parametric vectors. The superiority of the proposed method over the conventional frequency domain method is demonstrated by designing controllers for three different systems and validating the controllers through nonlinear transient simulations. One of the cases includes design of a PSS for the Manitoba Hydro system having about 29,000 states variables, which demonstrates the applicability of the proposed algorithm for a practical real-world system.

Small-signal Dynamic Stability Enhancement Of A DC-segmented AC Power System

This thesis proposes a control strategy for small-signal dynamic stability enhancement of a DC-segmented AC power system. This control strategy provides four control schemes based on HVDC supplementary control or modification of the operational condition of the HVDC control system to improve the system stability by (i) damping the oscillations within a segment using supplementary current control of a line-commutated HVDC link, based on the model predictive control (MPC) method (control scheme 1), (ii) minimizing the propagation of dynamics among the segments based on a coordinated linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG)-based supplementary control (control scheme 2), (iii) selectively distributing the oscillations among the segments based on a coordinated LQG-based supplementary control (control scheme 3) and (iv) changing the set-points of the HVDC control system in the direction determined based on the sensitivities of the Hopf stability margin to the HVDC links set-points (control scheme 4). Depending on the system characteristics, one or more of the proposed control schemes may be effective for mitigating the system oscillations. Study results show that (i) control scheme 1 leads to damped low-frequency oscillations and provides fast recovery times after faults, (ii) under control scheme 2, each segment in a DC-segmented system can experience major disturbances without causing adjacent segments to experience the disturbances with the same degree of severity, (iii) control scheme 3 enables the controlled propagation of the oscillations among segments and damps out the oscillatory dynamics in the faulted segment, and (iv) control scheme 4 improves the stability margin for Hopf bifurcations caused by various events. Since power system software tools exhibit limitations for advanced control design, this thesis also presents a methodology based on MATLAB/Simulink software to (i) systematically construct the nonlinear differential-algebraic model of an AC-DC system, and (ii) automatically extract a linearized state space model of the system for the design of the proposed control schemes. The nonlinear model also serves as a platform for the time-domain simulation of power system dynamics. The accuracy of the MATLAB/Simulink-based AC-DC power system model and time-domain simulation platform is validated by comparison against PSS/E.

Modeling of Multi-Pulse Transformer/Rectifier Units in Power Distribution Systems

Multi-pulse transformer/rectifier systems are becoming increasingly popular in power distribution systems. These topologies can be found in aircraft power systems, motor drives, and other applications that require low total harmonic distortion (THD) of the input line current. This increase in the use of multi-pulse transformer topologies has led to the need to study large systems composed of said units and their interactions within the system. There is also an interest in developing small-signal models so that stability issues can be studied. This thesis presents a procedure for the average model of multi-pulse transformer/rectifier topologies. The dq rotating reference frame was used to develop the average model and parameter estimation is incorporated through the use of polynomial fits. The average model is composed of nonlinear dependent sources and linear passive components. A direct benefit from this approach is a reduction in simulation time by two orders of magnitude. The average model concept demonstrates that it accurately predicts the dynamics of the system being studied. In particular, two specific topologies are studied, the 12-pulse hexagon transformer/rectifier (hex t/r) and the 18-pulse autotransformer rectifier unit (ATRU). In both cases, detailed switching model results are used to verify the operation of the average model. In the case of the hex t/r, the average model is further validated with experimental data from an 11 kVA prototype. The hex t/r output impedance, obtained from the linearized average model, has also been verified experimentally. / Master of Science

Impedance-Based Stability Analysis in Power Systems with Multiple STATCOMs in Proximity

Multiple STATCOM units in proximity have been adopted in power transmission systems in order to obtain better voltage regulation and share burdens. Throughout stability assessment in this dissertation, it is shown, for the first time, that STATCOMs could interact with each other in a negative way in the small-signal sense due to their control, causing voltage instability, while loads and transmission lines showed small effects. Since this voltage stability problem is induced by STATCOMs, d-q frame impedance-based stability analysis was used, for the first time, to explore the inherent power system instability problem with presence of STATCOMs as it provides an accurate understanding of the root cause of instability within the STATCOM control system. This dissertation first proposes the impedance model in d-q frame for STATCOMs, including dynamics from synchronization, current and voltage loops and reveals the significant features compared to other types of grid-tied converters that 1) impedance matrix strongly coupled in d and q channel due to nearly zero power factor, 2) different behaviors of impedances at low frequency due to inversed direction of reactive power and 3) coupled small-signal propagation paths on the voltage at point of common coupling from synchronization and ac voltage regulation. Using the proposed impedance model, this dissertation identifies the frequency range of interactions in a viewpoint of d-q frame impedances and pinpointed that the ac voltage regulation was the main reason of instability, masking the effects of PLL in power transmission systems. Due to the high impedance of STATCOMs compared to that of transmission lines around the frequency range of interactions, STATCOMs were seen to interact with each other through the transmission lines. A scaled-down 2-STATCOM power grid was built to verify the conclusions experimentally. / Ph. D. / STATCOMs have been proven a type of effective power electronics device for reactive power compensations and people are trying to install multiple STATCOMs in proximity in power systems in order to have better performances. This dissertation, for the first time, evaluates the operation of multiple STATCOMs in proximity and finds out that they could interact with each other in a negative way in the small-signal sense due to their control, causing voltage instability, while loads and transmission lines showed small effects. All the above is validated experimentally in a scaled-down 2-STATCOM power system.

Evaluation of Stability Boundaries in Power Systems

Power systems are extremely non-linear systems which require substantial modeling and control efforts to run continuously. The movement of the power system in parameter and state space is often not well understood, thus making it difficult or impossible to determine whether the system is nearing instability. This dissertation demonstrates several ways in which the power system stability boundary can be calculated. The power system movements evaluated here address the effects of inter-area oscillations on the system which occur in the seconds to minutes time period. The first uses gain scheduling techniques through creation of a set of linear parameter varying (LPV) systems for many operating points of the non-linear system. In the case presented, load and line reactance are used as parameters. The scheduling variables are the power flows in tie lines of the system due to the useful information they provide about the power system state in addition to being available for measurement. A linear controller is developed for the LPV model using H₂/H∞ with pole placement objectives. When the control is applied to the non-linear system, the proposed algorithm predicts the response of the non-linear system to the control by determining if the current system state is located within the domain of attraction of the equilibrium. If the stability domain contains a convex combination of the two points, the control will aid the system in moving towards the equilibrium. The second contribution of this thesis is through the development and implementation of a pseudo non-linear evaluation of a power system as it moves through state space. A system linearization occurs first to compute a multi-objective state space controller. For each contingency definition, many variations of the power system example are created and assigned to the particular contingency class. The powerflow variations and contingency controls are combined to run sets of time series analysis in which the Lyapunov function is tracked over three time steps. This data is utilized for a classification analysis which identifies and classifies the data by the contingency type. The goal is that whenever a new event occurs on the system, real time data can be fed into the trained tree to provide a control for application to increase system damping. / Ph. D.

Small Signal And Transient Stability Analysis Of Mvdc Shipboard Power System

Recent developments in high power rated Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) have resulted in their successful application in Multi-Terminal HVDC (MTDC) transmission systems and also have potential in the Medium Voltage DC (MVDC) distribution systems. This work presents the findings of stability studies carried out on a zonal MVDC architecture for the shipboard power distribution system. The stability study is confined to rotor angle stability of the power system, i.e. the transient and small signal stability analysis. The MTDC ring structure similar to MVDC shipboard power system was implemented in MATLAB/Simulink to look at the transient behavior of the MVDC system. Small signal stability analysis has been carried out with the help of Power System Toolbox (PST) for both MVAC as well as MVDC architectures. Later, Participation Analysis has been carried out to address the small signal instability in the case of MVAC architecture and methods for enhancement were also presented.

A systematic procedure to determine controller parameters for MMC-VSC systems

Modular multilevel converter type voltage source converter (MMC-VSC) is a potential candidate for present and future HVdc projects. The d-q decoupled control system is widely used to control MMC-VSC systems. Selection of PI-controller parameters for MMC-VSC systems is a challenging task as control loops are not completely decoupled. Since there is no widely accepted method to tune these control loops, the industry practice is to use the trial and error approach that requires a great amount of time. Therefore, it is required to develop a systematic procedure to tune PI-controllers considering necessary system dynamics and also to propose guidelines for control system design. This thesis introduces a systematic procedure to determine PI-controller parameters for the d-q decoupled control system. A linearized state-space model of an MMC-VSC system is developed to calculate the frequency-domain attributes. The control tuning problem is formulated as an optimization problem which is general and any meta-heuristic method can be used to solve the problem. In this thesis, the simulated annealing is applied to solve the problem. The efficacy of the tuned parameters is tested on the electromagnetic transient model of the test system on the real-time digital simulators (RTDS). In addition, it is shown that the proposed method is suitable to tune PI-controller parameters for MMC-VSC systems connected to strong as well as weak ac networks. Further, this thesis investigates the effects of d-q decoupled controller parameters, phase-locked loop (PLL) gains, and measuring delays on the stability and performance of the MMC-VSC test system. It is shown that the converter controllers have greater influence on the system stability and the impact of PLL gains is negligible unless very high PLL gains are used. In addition, the negative impact of measuring delays in instantaneous currents and voltages is also analysed by performing eigenvalue and sensitivity analysis. Finally, a set of guidelines for control design of MMC-VSC systems is summarized. In general, the proposed control tuning procedure would be useful for the industry to tune PI-controllers of MMC-VSC systems. Furthermore, the proposed methodology is generic and can be adapted to tune of any dynamic device in power systems. / February 2017

Impact of Increased Penetration of DFIG Based Wind Turbine Generators on Rotor Angle Stability of Power Systems

abstract: An advantage of doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) as compared to conventional fixed speed wind turbine generators is higher efficiency. This higher efficiency is achieved due to the ability of the DFIG to operate near its optimal turbine efficiency over a wider range of wind speeds through variable speed operation. This is achieved through the application of a back-to-back converter that tightly controls the rotor current and allows for asynchronous operation. In doing so, however, the power electronic converter effectively decouples the inertia of the turbine from the system. Hence, with the increase in penetration of DFIG based wind farms, the effective inertia of the system will be reduced. With this assertion, the present study is aimed at identifying the systematic approach to pinpoint the impact of increased penetration of DFIGs on a large realistic system. The techniques proposed in this work are tested on a large test system representing the Midwestern portion of the U.S. Interconnection. The electromechanical modes that are both detrimentally and beneficially affected by the change in inertia are identified. The combination of small-signal stability analysis coupled with the large disturbance analysis of exciting the mode identified is found to provide a detailed picture of the impact on the system. The work is extended to develop suitable control strategies to mitigate the impact of significant DFIG penetration on a large power system. Supplementary control is developed for the DFIG power converters such that the effective inertia contributed by these wind generators to the system is increased. Results obtained on the large realistic power system indicate that the frequency nadir following a large power impact is effectively improved with the proposed control strategy. The proposed control is also validated against sudden wind speed changes in the form of wind gusts and wind ramps. The beneficial impact in terms of damping power system oscillations is observed, which is validated by eigenvalue analysis. Another control mechanism is developed aiming at designing the power system stabilizer (PSS) for a DFIG similar to the PSS of synchronous machines. Although both the supplementary control strategies serve the purpose of improving the damping of the mode with detrimental impact, better damping performance is observed when the DFIG is equipped with both the controllers. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Electrical Engineering 2010
