Roma and the contradictions of European inclusion policies : citizens associated with European societiesSzilvási, Marek January 2015 (has links)
The research addresses the relevant contradictions of European Roma inclusion policy-making. The situation which many Roma in European societies experience nowadays combines deprivation and exclusion on the grounds of civil and political recognition, cultural identity and minority rights, and socio-economic justice in (re-)distributing resources. The recent European call for specific Roma-targeted policies is also articulated in these three discourses of inclusion, whether these policies should be based on their distinctive ethnic identity to be emancipated, legally- and politically-defined citizenship to be enforced, or socio-economic precariousness to be improved. Each of these three discourses addresses different type of inequalities; sometimes they can complement each other in promoting substantial equality, whereas at other times one politics of inclusion can reinforce the existing inequalities of another type. These domains are closely connected with and burden one another reciprocally – in the sense that better solutions of the problems of one domain can increase the problems in another and well-intended policies can thus turn into new forms of exclusion. The research confirmed the uncertainty among international policy-makers regarding what should serve as a conceptual base for European Roma inclusion policies. It furthermore traced a lack of attempts to reconcile the identities of passive service recipients and those of actively claiming citizens. It also revealed that most of the policies are designed within patron-client relationship where the benefits of patrons exceed the benefits of activated Roma. Finally, it proposes to recalibrate inclusion policies towards accentuating socio-economic rights and concludes that integration through-and-to low-skilled job does not meet the objective of inclusion.

Perceptions and Experiences of Social Integration among Adult ImmigrantsEze, Vincent, Kiarie, Benard January 2016 (has links)
A sense of social belonging is an important factor for integration. The different experiences that immigrants face towards social integration were of major interest to the authors. The authors conducted a qualitative study based on the experiences that immigrants went through as well as their perceptions of social integration. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four immigrants, ranging between 31- 42 years of age. The themes found during the analytic process were: Swedish language, social networks and information, identifying yourself and culture. The most important findings were that social workers and other persons in authorities were important for establishing contacts with native-born, as they introduced them to activities that led to interaction with native Swedish. Social activities, in particular, seemed to play an important role in establishing contact with native-born and creating a social network.

Social integration of two girls with Down syndrome attending a summer campFridell, Sari R. (Sari Robin) January 1991 (has links)
This study investigated friendship formations of two girls with Down Syndrome who were integrated into a unit of 34 ten and eleven-year-old girls at a residential summer camp. While acting as participant observer, in the role of co-counsellor, I recorded behavioural observations and informal interviews in a journal, friendship log and personal log. A quantitative data analysis investigated the frequency with which campers elected to be with these two girls, as well as the number of campers who chose them as their best friends, as preferred bunkmates for next year and as those with whom they would want to keep in touch. A qualitative data analysis investigated the comments made by campers and counsellors concerning the program and the two girls of interest to this study. Results indicated that these two girls formed friendships during this month-long program. Limitations of this investigation are considered and some suggestions for further research are explored.

M.A. / According to Correctional Services Act 111 of 1998, DCS has moral and legal responsibility over the parolees. Parolees are supposed to be reintegrated into the society, while still serving their sentences and ultimately become responsible citizens. Some of the parolees are unable to complete their parole sentences and end up re-offending. There are however some parolees who manage to complete their sentences successfully, despite the parole conditions and their personal circumstances. The researcher was interested in those parolees who completed their parole sentences successfully. The strengths perspective, together with other strength related theories, served as a theoretical lens that helped to identify and describe factors that enable parolees to complete their sentences successfully. A qualitative design and descriptive approach was employed. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. A sample of 15 parolees who had completed their sentences successfully was identified. Data were analysed using Creswell’s approach. It was found that factors such as employment, educational qualification, job skills, personal qualities, support, relationships and networking enabled parolees to complete their sentences successfully. Recommendations are made based on the findings.
