It has the aim to show the social and economic conditions, as well as the non-schooling, of people who live in Paredão and Costa do Bica (Piratini, RS). The study was developed in the months of January and February of the year 2008, when 114 families were visited, being 57 in Paredão and 57 in Cost do Bica. The main source of data consisted in structured interviews. From the interviews it was possible to collect data from 344 people. The responsible ones for the information were the 144 people who were available to answer the questions, as well as they could sign the authorization for public use of the collected data. The constant information from interviews which are shown in this study are about the social and economical conditions of the people who live in Paredão and Costa do Bica, and it is also about the non-schooling - the main focus of the dissertation. According to the non-schooling data of the people who live in Paredão and Costa do Bica, four basic points were revealed: the ones who were not in school age; the ones who were already enrolled in the City and the State Public Schools; the ones who were not at school anymore; and ones who have never been to school. The analisys that focus mainly the ones who are more than fifteen years old, are based on Ferraro Ferraro (1999; 2002; 2004), Galvão (2007), Pinto (2000), Ribeiro (1997; 2004; 2006), theories, besides others. The collected data from the structured interviews reveal that among people who are 15 or more, 40% are illiterate. The analisys indicated that illiteracy, in the mentioned areas, is related to social, historical and educational factors. Besides illiteracy, it was noticed, among other aspects, that children in obligatory school age do attend teaching public institutions, however those ones who are more than fourteen years old, and out of the obligation to attend school, experience school exclusion processes, since the schools do not provide the students who come from rural areas, with oportunities for being kept at school.

The nature of social integration in post-apartheid Cape Town

Lemanski, Charlotte January 2006 (has links)
This research considers the nature of social integration between individuals living in desegregated neighbourhoods in post-apartheid Cape Town. Social integration is understood as a dynamic process between individuals from apartheid's different racial classifications as opposed to the common emphasis in the literature on the static outcome of a neighbourhood being integrated. The research was based on both quantitative and qualitative methods. A quantitative analysis of South Africa's 2001 census results was conducted. From this analysis neighbourhoods in Cape Town with "multiple population dominance', where no single group comprises more than 50% of the suburb population and at least one other group comprises over 25%, were identified. Qualitative fieldwork (semi-structured interviews and mental maps) was conducted in two of these 'multiple population dominance' suburbs. Based on research in these neighbourhoods I conclude that labelling a suburb as physically desegregated implies a level of social cohesion that was not found, and masks the reality of division based on length of tenure and socio-economic status. Within the specific South African context of racial inequality, such opposition to desegregation that is not matched by a shared class is likely to restrict the potential for social integration to develop beyond the confines of black middle-classes moving into 'White' areas, and poor Coloureds and Black Africans living in low-cost housing, thus affecting only a handful of the population.

Women, work and family in England and France : a question of identity

Clifton, Naomi January 1999 (has links)
This thesis explores some of the individual attitudes and choices which may explain differing patterns in women's work in England and France. Women's work, however, cannot be considered outside the context of their family lives, and there exist important differences between England and France in terms of the structures in place to facilitate the combining of paid work and family commitments. It is proposed that these are related to broader social and economic structures which characterise the countries concerned, and the family and gender roles assumed by them. The question addressed, therefore, is the relationship between work identity and female identity. This is examined by comparing full-time working women, both single and with families, in the two countries. Since the question concerns meanings rather than frequencies, quantitative methods such as surveys are rejected in favour of a triangulated methodology combining repertory grid, Twenty Statements Test and in- depth interview. The results from each of these are reported separately. There is strong convergence within and clear differences between national groups, regardless of marital status. French and English groups are both committed to working, but this takes different forms in the two countries. The French women define themselves equally in terms of work, personal relationships and social lives, with relatively little conflict between them. For the English women, work identity comes first, there is more conflict between work and family roles and more tension in personal relationships. This may partly be accounted for by the English women's greater concern with career progression and personal advancement, which is more likely to conflict with family roles. The findings are related to broader issues of economic, social and family policy, historical factors, religious traditions and attitudes towards gender and equality. These themselves are seen as reflecting more general ideologies in the countries concerned. Finally, there is a consideration of questions raised by the study, and suggestions for further research.

O trabalho do negro livre na cidade de São Paulo 1872-1890 / The free black people´s work in the city of São Paulo (1872-1890)

Jacino, Ramatis 06 March 2007 (has links)
By the end of the XIX century, the wealth produced by the expansion of coffee plantations and the arrival of thousands of European immigrants, brought about an unprecedented growth to the city of São Paulo. Simultaneously, as slavery became extinct and the ever-growing contingent of free blacks added to the masses of other poor ethnic groups, the dominant class\'s concern rose. Striving for space in the cities and for a place in the labor market, these social groups staged conflicts internally, against other social groups and against an oppressive and discriminatory State. The rising population of free blacks, however, joined the labor market as slavery declined. Such process is aborted with the consolidation of labor and the emergence of racist theories that push them out of the formal market, forcing them to survive on the fringes of society, either by performing informal jobs of little economic and social value or resorting to crime to make a living.

CONSOLIDAÇÃO OU MUDANÇA? UMA ANÁLISE FEMINISTA DA PASTORAL DA CRIANÇA / Consolidation or change? A Pastoral da Criança feminist analysis.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Capa.pdf: 6910 bytes, checksum: 50c453bfdfbf84087c5aea1573f20ee6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2004-02-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The main focus of this thesis is to investigate the potential for liberation of women beyond the system of kyriarchical domination in the nongovernmental organisation, Pastoral da Criança, an organisation connected to CNBB (National Brazilian Bishops Conference). The research is partly also interested in the question of the extend to which the Pastoral da Criança is influenced by either the Ecclesial Base Communities or the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement. Methodologically a field research is set up in the region of Curitiba utilising semi- structured interviews with twelve women working in the organisation. As theoretical framework, it is used theories developed in Social Sciences as sociology, psychology, psychoanalysis and theology. The feminist qualitative data analysis shows the discursive social representations of the women, the perception of their own identities and the importance of the organisation in the construction of their lives. It brings to the conclusion that the organisation merely reproduces the traditional profile of women with almost exclusive emphasis on the traditional characteristics of motherhood. On the other hand the organisation facilitates for the women the construction of communitarian networks. The Pastoral da Criança is linked to a neo- liberal system of thinking that reproduces the dominating kyriarchal discourse of the Catholic Church hierarchy and of an hygienist medical system. These institutions appropriate women s bodies and lives and reduce them to merely biological, reproductive and nurturing functions. The organization is characterised by activities which do not delve into the root causes of poverty, but it only tries to decrease the effects and consequences of poverty. In the teaching and learning sessions of the organisation a banking system of education is used which reproduces domination and dependency relations for poor women. The organisation, though within the framework of religious ideology, is not systematically embedded in a religious space. A suggestion related to the present situation would be that the organisation could be opened to feminist values and ideas in the field of health and religion in order to promote real liberation and empowerment of poor women. This recommendation is in line with the openness, need for reflection and knowledge shown by the interviewed women in their reactions to the researcher approach during the field research. The limitation in this research is related to the location which do not present any influence from social movements.(AU) / O objetivo central desta tese é investigar o potencial de transformação social da organização não-governamental, ligada a CNBB(Confederação Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil).- Pastoral da Criança - para a libertação de mulheres que lá atuam, das relações de dominação e opressões inerentes ao contexto kyriarchal.
