Social consciousness in the work of Beckmann and Kentridge : an artist's view

Wishart, Lionel H., University of Western Sydney, College of Arts, School of Communication Arts January 2006 (has links)
This study is about how a social consciousness is made visible in the paintings and drawings of two artists who have in common an urge to examine the human condition in the context of traumatic social and political circumstances. Their prime concern is with the eternal complexities between the individual and society. Pessimism, hope, anger, frustration and guilt reside in their images. This thesis explores how their social consciousness is expressed through the unique pictorial devices that each creates. It examines their biographies and the social and political milieu influencing their work; it explores their perceptions through the examination of the particular themes and devices that they developed as visual language. These influences lead to the examination of my own artistic practice, exploring the connection between my social consciousness and my pictorial language. / Master of Arts (Hons.)

The Use of Life History Collage to Explore Learning Related to the Enactment of Social Consciousness in Female Nonprofit Leaders

Seymour, Susan R. 01 August 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to consider the development of social consciousness in female nonprofit leaders. The problem undergirding the study is that we do not know enough about social consciousness to know how it is learned, if it can be taught, if it is stable over a lifetime, and what factors and life events shape its unique expression. A further concern is understanding how people come to enact caring about social justice causes and why they enacted caring about certain causes but not others. The research investigated learning related to the social consciousness of female nonprofit leaders who work with organizations focused on social justice issues. The research method utilized, life history collage, employed a combination of art and life history to investigate this phenomenon. Once collages were made, participants were interviewed to further explore emergent themes and these themes were analyzed using the learning theory enactivism to understand how learning influenced each woman’s social consciousness. Findings indicate that organizing structures emerged in childhood that both enabled and shaped the potential of each woman’s social consciousness. This “potential” was inherent in the structure of each woman’s world view, but was enacted in the way this structure coupled with opportunities in her environment. In other words, each woman’s social consciousness coemerged within environments that shaped her social consciousness and that were shaped by her social consciousness. Thus, social consciousness and environment are mutually specifying.

Brigadas muralistas e cartazes de propaganda da Experiência Chilena (1970-1973) / The murals and posters produced in Chile during the presidential campaign (1970-1973)

Dalmás, Carine 21 December 2006 (has links)
The objective of this study is to analyse the murals and posters which were produced in Chile during the presidential campaign and the administration of the Popular Unit (PU), which had Salvador Allende as a leader (1970 -1973). During that time, a project was devised which aimed at effecting a transition to socialism by peaceful means. It is our understanding that the painting of murals and posters were the means of expression of the political struggle led by leftist parties of various tendencies, which were brought together in the name of a common project. We have started from the hypothesis that these images, created for PU\'s political propaganda, express, as historical documents, not only the political and ideological values of this coalition, but also its internal tensions. These propaganda images were aimed at creating society\'s awareneness and gaining its support for the transformation of Chile into a socialist country, and thus have contributed to the construction of a socialist consciousness. The study of the ways in which PU\'s visual propaganda has spread this consciousness constitutes the central axis of the present analysis, which is circumscribed, from a historiographic point of view, in the field of the history of representation. It is our understanding that the analysis of images expressed in murals and posters has served as a means to apprehend the significance of a consciousness which directed the political measures of the government, and the leftist political parties and movements of the time

How far are you willing to go when the prices are so low? : A mixed-method study on how ultra-fast ecommerce marketing strategies affect consumers sustainability beliefs.

Holma, Matilda, Junestrand, Alva January 2024 (has links)
The surge in online shopping, catalyzed by the COVID-19 pandemic, has reshaped consumerbehavior worldwide. Ecommerce platforms account for a substantial portion of retailtransactions, and as the digital marketplace continues to expand, the allure of ultra-fastecommerce platforms such as Shein, Temu, and AliExpress grows exponentially. Theseplatforms offer an extensive array of products at unprecedented response to immediate trendsand affordability, leveraging aggressive marketing strategies to capture consumer attention. However, the convergence of ultra-fast ecommerce raises concerns about environmentaldegradation, unethical production practices, and labor exploitation. Brands operating withinthis business practice often prioritize profit margins over sustainability, perpetuating a throw-away culture that undermines efforts towards ethical consumption. The environmental andsocial implications of this rapid consumption trend remain underexplored, and what this mixed-method study aims to investigate is the intricate relationship between ultra-fast ecommercemarketing tactics and consumer sustainability beliefs, focusing on Swedish consumers. Afterextensive literature review and empirical research involving a survey of 122 consumers and 6follow-up interviews, this study examines the multifaceted influences of ultra-fast ecommercemarketing on Swedish consumers' shopping behaviors and sustainability attitudes. Ourinvestigation focuses on the complex interplay between price consciousness, impulsiveness, trend seeking and opinion seeking behavior, and the persuasive power of marketing tacticsemployed by ultra-fast ecommerce platforms. Our findings suggest that while Swedishconsumers express a strong commitment to sustainability in principle, the attraction of lowprices often eclipses environmental and social considerations when making purchasingdecisions on ultra-fast ecommerce platforms. Marketing strategies such as paid advertising, influencers, UGC, and aggressive discounts play a pivotal role in driving opinion seeking, impulsive and compulsive buying behaviors among consumers. Empirical findings reveal a lackof consumer awareness regarding the environmental and ethical consequences of ultra-fastecommerce purchases, and skepticism toward sustainability claims made by low-pricecompanies. However, consumers demonstrate high trust in influencers, who play a significantrole in shaping purchasing decisions, particularly regarding ultra-fast ecommerce. By shedding light on how ultra-fast ecommerce marketing strategies affect consumer behavior, this research contributes to academic scholarship and offers a range of practical implications. We offer a deeper insight into how consumers make choices and suggest ways to encouragepro-sustainable shopping habits in the ecommerce marketplace. Ultimately, this studyunderscores the urgent need for more studies focusing on regulatory frameworks, industrystandards, consumer education initiatives together with tailored marketing strategies that alignwith consumer values and how to promote ethical consumption practices to reduce the negativeimpact of ultra-fast ecommerce on the environment and on ethical aspects. By empoweringconsumers with knowledge and promoting ethical alternatives, we can encourage moreconscious and responsible purchasing decisions, ultimately contributing to a more sustainableand equitable digital marketplace.
