Pelizan, Tatiana Raquele 14 September 2004 (has links)
The objective of this work is to evaluate the mechanical properties for nondestructive testing in round timber by ultrasonic waves, through the correlation of these with static tests, and to identify the dependence of the ultrasonic speed in relation to the geometry of roundwood. The ultrasound technique is based on the relation between the propagation of the ultrasonic wave in the material and the elastic properties of such a material. In the experimentation Eucalipto Citriodora was used and the procedure was developed in two stages: the first one with roundwood of structural size and second with specimens removed from these parts. The following physical and mechanical properties had been evaluated: apparent density at 12% (Dap,12%); moisture content (U); strength in compression parallel-to-grain (fc0); modulus of elasticity in compression parallel-to-grain (Ec0), modulus of rupture (MOR or fM) and modulus of elasticity (MOE or EM0). For determination of the dynamic modulus of elasticity (Ed) it was used the Sylvatest ultrasound device, with exponential transducer of 22kHz, as well as the V-Meter Mark II device, with plane transducers of 54 and 150 kHz. The results indicate that the ultrasound technique is sensible to the geometry of the roundwood. The statistical analyses of the data indicate that this technique of nondestructive evaluation can be used to evaluate the mechanical properties of round timber with relative reliability.

To design and to map technically, aesthetically and ontologically “sonic-affective machines”: this is the primordial desire of this work that, especially through the schizoanalysis plateau created by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, discusses and proposes computational arts in which potency and sound sensibility play a unique and critical role in the creation and understanding of such machines. In the games, in the afectivities and in the uniques transductions created by them, the phylum of the Earth and of the machine coexists in metastable ecosystems where ontological binary digits are incarnated in technological binary digits. Between art, science and philosophy, from the existence of an immanent machinic reality, the mecanosphere, the sonic-affective machines are born as arthistics-technological compunds capable of conversations between the biosphere and the technosphere, in their inclinations to contemplate and become audible the forces, events and durations of the biosphere. Inferred by the forces of silicon, born from the subjectivities of sonic-affective machines a possible Homo natura and its power to listen to the polyphonic symphony of the Earth, as a mirror of the univocity of the cosmos.

'Tum Teav' : a study of a Cambodian literary classic

Chigas, George V. January 2001 (has links)
One of the cornerstones of the Cambodian literary canon is the verse novel Turn Teav. There are numerous versions of the story that cover all the major modes of creative expression in Cambodian culture. In addition to the literary and theatrical versions, the story also appears in different historical texts, as it is generally believed that the characters described in the story are based on actual people and events in Cambodian history. Despite Turn Teav's tremendous importance and popularity however, there are no studies that examine the extensive literary criticism on the text or the influence of the story in contemporary Cambodian culture and society. This work is an attempt to present an overview of the literary criticism on Turn Teav and provide the reader w ith an insight into the viewpoints of contemporary Cambodian writers and intellectuals on the major themes in the story. Chapter 1 discusses different versions of the story in various genres, including literary, historical, oral, theatrical, and film, in order to demonstrate the story's importance in Cambodian culture and society. Chapter 2 presents my revised translation of Turn Teav by Venerable Botumthera Som that was begun while completing my MA degree at Cornell. Venerable Botumthera Som's manuscript was completed in 1915 and is the best-known version of the story. 3 Chapter 3 examines different texts of literary criticism on Turn Teav, giving special attention to the controversy concerning the original author of the story. This chapter also discusses major themes in the story, namely traditional codes of conduct, abuse of power, and Justice, and uses various examples from Cambodian literature to illustrate them further. Chapter 4 concludes this work with an analysis of several interviews that I conducted with Cambodian writers and scholars concerning the major themes in the story. Particular attention is given to the influence of Turn Teav in Cambodian culture and society, especially the theme of justice in light of the pending trials of the former members of the Khmer Rouge for crimes of genocide.

___________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This study evaluated the effect of prior training in frequency discrimination of sounds on the acquisition of conditional relations, formation of equivalence classes and recombinative reading in tasks of matching and playing keyboards. Sequences of notes into sound (A), notation in Bass Clef (B) and piano keyboard pictures (C) were used as stimuli. Six college students participated in two experimental phases of training and testing of conditional relations, preceded by frequency discrimination training and testing. Half the participants performed the Auditory Condition, with auditory stimuli in Tone Discrimination Training, and the other half, the Visual Condition, with visual stimuli. In Phase 1, two relations were trained AB and AC, and added another two in Phase 2. After these training sessions, Mixed Training (CRF e VR-2) was performed, followed by Conditional Relations Tests and Keyboard Playing Test, with training and recombined stimuli and Frequency Discrimination Test. There was formation of equivalence classes and transfer of stimulus control for the keyboard playing response, as well as increased recombinative reading performance over the phases. It was also observed improved performance on conditional relations and keyboard playing tests when visual stimuli used only, but there were no major differences in results in both conditions, which had high scores on the Tone Discrimination Test from the pretest. It is suggested that further studies select participants by low score in tone discrimination tasks and apply more criterious training procedure for this skill.
