Wireless ICT monitoring for hydroponic agricultureNdame, Loic Andre Stephane January 2015 (has links)
It is becoming increasingly evident that agriculture is playing a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of South Africa. The agricultural sector is important because it contributes approximately 2% to the gross domestic product of the country. However, many factors impact on the sustainability of traditional agriculture in South Africa. Unpredictable climatic conditions, land degradation and a lack of information and awareness of innovative farming solutions are among the factors plaguing the South African agricultural landscape. Various farming techniques have been looked at in order to mitigate these challenges. Among these interventions are the introduction of organic agriculture, greenhouse agriculture and hydroponic agriculture, which is the focus area of this study. Hydroponic agriculture is a method of precision agriculture where plants are grown in a mineral nutrient solution instead labour- intensive activity that requires an incessant monitoring of the farm environment in order to ensure a successful harvest. Hydroponic agriculture, however, presents a number of challenges that can be mitigated by leveraging the recent mobile Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) breakthroughs. This dissertation reports on the development of a wireless ICT monitoring application for hydroponic agriculture: HydroWatcher mobile app. HydroWatcher is a complex system that is composed of several interlacing parts and this study will be focusing on the development of the mobile app, the front-end of the system. This focus is motivated by the fact that in such systems the front-end, being the part that the users interact with, is critical for the acceptance of the system. However, in order to design and develop any part of HydroWatcher, it is crucial to understand the context of hydroponic agriculture in South Africa. Therefore, complementary objectives of this study are to identify the critical factors that impact hydroponic agriculture as well as the challenges faced by hydroponic farmers in South Africa. Thus, it leads to the elicitation of the requirements for the design and development of HydroWatcher. This study followed a mixed methods approach, including interviews, observations, exploration of hydroponic farming, to collect the data, which will best enable the researcher to understand the activities relating to hydroponic agriculture. A qualitative content analysis was followed to analyse the data and to constitute the requirements for the system and later to assert their applicability to the mobile app. HydroWatcher proposes to couple recent advances in mobile technology development, like the Android platform, with the contemporary advances in electronics necessary for the creation of wireless sensor nodes, as well as Human Computer interaction guidelines tailored for developing countries, in order to boost the user experience.

This study was aimed at investigating the high level of consumer indebtedness in the South African retail market more specifically factors that contribute to consumer indebtedness. Recommendations on how to control the level of consumer indebtedness are also presented. Consumer indebtedness is a problem in many countries around the world and as witnessed during the 2008 global financial crisis, its impact can be disastrous. Not only does it create problems for the families but also for a country and even to the extent of the whole world. The literature conducted did not reveal a study undertaken to investigate factors that impact consumer indebtedness. Eight factors were identified and explored further in this study. Results were analysed in chapter three and outcomes presented in chapter four. The method used in conducting this study is the quantitative method. A questionnaire was developed based on the literature review conducted. The questionnaire was a five point Likert scale and was distributed to the respondents in the southern area of Tshwane Municipal district. In view of a manageable number of responses, results were analysed using an excel spreadsheet. Results were verified by an independent expert. From the eight factors that are identified, one (easy access to credit) was found to impact the high level of consumer indebtedness. Although there are other weaknesses, easy access to credit is found to be the main contributor. Recommendations on the findings are presented in chapter five of this study.

The taxability of rewards from suppliersAkoonjie, Ahmed Hassen January 2016 (has links)
Successful business in today’s competitive climate thrives on building relationships with one’s suppliers, clientele and employees. Businesses, as a form of strategic engagement, extend their appreciation and recognition to these key role players with rewards (or incentives) such as prizes, holidays and free goods and/or services. This treatise examines the taxation implications of such rewards and determines that the market value thereof should be taxed in the hands of their recipients. This study also investigates possible indicators (or points of reference) to establish such market value and suggests alternate values that may be ascribed thereto for inclusion in the recipient’s gross income. Where the rewards are passed onwards by the recipient to its employees, fringe benefit consequences are occasioned and this study observes that the market value thereof should be taxed in the employees’ hands. The study goes on further to consider the position of the supplier (or provider) of the rewards and finds that the supplier is entitled to a deduction of the cost of the rewards it has provided to its clients or customers. This study also reflects upon the penal implications of not including the market value of rewards in gross income and notes that such non-inclusion constitutes a fiscal loss and is subject to an understatement penalty. Key recommendations on how such omission may be addressed by the tax authorities are also presented.

Research into entrepreneurship and small business in South Africa: current status and future challengesTai-Hing, Paul January 2012 (has links)
This research seeks to advance knowledge of the current state of entrepreneurship and small businesses in South Africa, and reports on a review of 32 articles and 244 research abstracts in the field. The studies as a whole indicate that entrepreneurs in South Africa require more knowledge in the fields of: Networking in business, Internationalisation of business, Entrepreneurship training. Since the 1990s, research in entrepreneurship has grown in terms of the number of articles published and conference papers presented. In many countries entrepreneurship has also become part of the political agenda as it is perceived as a possible solution to high unemployment rates. In addition, interest in entrepreneurship has heightened during the 2000s, especially in business schools. Much of this interest is driven by student demand for courses in entrepreneurship, either because of genuine interest in the subject, or because students see entrepreneurship education as a useful hedge given uncertain corporate careers. Most of the entrepreneurship research abstracts reviewed for this study focused on race, gender and ethical issues in South Africa. These three research topics focused on: Attitudes and experiences of black women: differ from other racial groups in business with the results indicating that black women were competent and highly-motivated, but lacked communication skills and Western business orientation. Many black women also desired equality although their male counterparts opposed this. Black women also lacked role models and career guidance. Different population groups participate in the economy: reflect regional, income, expenditure, skill, occupational and labour differences, including labour supply and demand. Ethics concerns: include whether it should be taught in the human resources management curricula taught in universities. From the findings it appeared that entrepreneurship research in South Africa is fairly similar to international research contexts. As entrepreneurship and small businesses are diverse and multi-disciplinary, the studies reviewed indicated a wide range of different models, theories, frameworks, and combinations of these. However, the theoretical richness of the studies reviewed was, in many cases, relatively low, and only a few of the studies could be regarded as highly-theoretical. In addition, the presentation of the various theories and models applied was very often inadequately reported. It is also important to note that altogether between 7 and 11 percent of the studies were without any well-argued theoretical framework. Thus, researchers in the field should discuss the theoretical frameworks applied in their empirical analyses, to ensure this will improve the theoretical understanding of the phenomenon. Although this study made use of the mixed-method approach to conduct the research, it is also important to note that, in 12 percent of cases, methodological issues were poorly described. Most of the studies often did not describe the data collection response rate provide sample demographic and firm size details as well as identify the target industry. These details were often missing or loosely defined. The reasons for the selection of a certain research approach were also poorly explained, making many of the research studies deficient or limited methodologically. These omissions present a challenge, not only to authors in the field, but also to reviewers and editors in academic journals, as this impacts on the scientific rigor of published papers. On the basis of published papers reviewed, it seems that, personally-administered data collection works best in South Africa. From the research studies undertaken in South Africa, it is evident that much has been researched in the areas of gender (specifically the role of women in business), entrepreneurship training and ethics in business. It is evident that during the 1980s, no research was conducted in South Africa in the areas of family businesses and entrepreneurship training, while international research focuses on these topics. During the 1990s, no research focused on networking in small businesses, and. during the 2000s, there was a lack of research on internationalisation of businesses as only six articles were published from 2000 until 2011 on these topics. This highlights a need for internationalisation research especially as it is well-documented that the South African economy cannot survive if it does not take cognisance of its international competitors. On the basis of the articles and abstracts reviewed, the current state of knowledge concerning entrepreneurship and small businesses in South Africa was assessed, especially the need for the internationalisation of South African small businesses. Moreover, research studies could also focus on the obstacles encountered in the internationalisation process of South African small businesses.

Telkom SA will be facing a number of strategic challenges that will test its ability to survive as a telecommunications company over the next number of years. To remain competitive, Telkom must develop strategies to assure survival in a competitive environment. To assure the long-term survival of Telkom SA when moving into a competitive environment, the organisation must build a sustainable competitive advantage. In the face of increasingly fierce competition, the adoption of collaborative alliances between firms is becoming more and more common and the adoption of a world-class supply chain will be an ideal scenario for Telkom SA. A worldclass supply chain goes beyond the scope of the internal operations of an organisation, therefore the material distribution process was chosen for this study, which involved the internal operations in the organisation. The study included the availability of material up to the transportation of the material to the staging areas. The aim of this research was to identify the inefficiencies of the material distribution process of the Southern Region of Telkom SA to become worldclass. A quantitative technique was used to identify the inefficiencies. It was found that the availability and transportation of material were the inefficient categories, preventing the customer to receive the product or service on time. Communication, inaccurate forecasting and inefficient transportation of material were some of the reasons for not delivering material on time. Some of the recommendations included developing a model that could overcome the current inefficiencies in transportation, improving the communication channels, training and the development of employees at all levels.

The main aim of undertaking this research study is to investigate the role played by principals in the induction of new educators in their schools. The main questions the study addresses are: · Why is it necessary for new educators to be inducted · How could mentoring play a role in an induction programme? · What should the role of the principals be in the induction process? · What should the induction programme include and how should it be implemented? The study highlights the problems new teachers experience with respect to aspects such as classroom control and imparting information. It also emphasizes the role of the principal and the mentor in assisting new educators with these issues. The qualitative approach was used to collect data. Data were collected through interviews and observations. The main findings were that new educators experienced problems with classroom control, discipline and that principals should help them with adjustment in the school by allocating a mentor teacher for support.

The introduction of curriculum changes in mathematics has brought about challenges for both mathematics teachers and learners in South African schools. Apart from introducing new curriculum content to learners, teachers cope with factors which impact upon their collective efficacy (the sum total of the self-perceptions of all the teachers in a particular school regarding the conduciveness of effective teaching, learning and assessment processes) and on the teacher self-efficacy of mathematics teachers (the personal self-perceptions of mathematics teachers to execute their mandates effectively in the teaching, learning and assessment of mathematics ) which consequently lead to mathematics learners developing better concepts in mathematics. This study focuses on the impact of collective efficacy on the implementation of the New Curriculum Statement (NCS) for mathematics teachers, teaching in schools situated in previously disadvantaged communities. It is within the context of the constraints that these schools face, not only the socio-economic barriers, but also the willingness of all the teachers to develop a culture of teaching and learning, and the consequent impact it has on the effective teaching, learning and assessment of mathematics in the classrooms of these schools, that the effect of efficacious/non-efficacious teachers in these schools is investigated. A mixed method approach by using quantitative data (generated from questionnaires) and qualitative data (generated from interviews) probe the primary research question, which aims to investigate the effect of collective efficacy on the introduction of a new curriculum by mathematics teachers. The sub-questions probe the specific efficacy relations relating to the primary research question in terms of the perceptions and perspectives of all the teachers about their respective sample schools, how these perceptions and perspectives influence mathematics teachers in the manner they perceive their control over the teaching, learning and assessment processes in the mathematics classroom, and the consequent impact it has on mathematics learners developing better concepts and ultimately achieving better academic results in mathematics.

The process of extradition is a vital component of International Criminal Law as a means of ensuring the suppression and prevention of international crimes. It is the internationally accepted method used by states to surrender an offender back to the state where the alleged offence was committed so that such offender can be tried and punished. Without such process, and with the ease of modern global travel, offenders would, in all likelihood be able to escape prosecution and punishment. Most organized democratic societies recognize that the suppression of crime is necessary for peace and order in society and that extradition is an effective tool to be used to bring to justice a fugitive attempting to evade the law by fleeing to another country. What follows is a discussion, firstly on the theory of extradition and secondly on the effect that human rights has had on the law of extradition. The theory of extradition involves an analysis of extradition from its ancient roots to its position in society today. With regard to extradition in South Africa, reference is made to the various periods of the country’s history. The colonial era before South Africa acquired Republican status in 1961 is referred to in order to establish a basis for the present law of extradition in South Africa. The period during the apartheid era after achieving Republican status in 1961 is discussed in order to show how and why South Africa moved away from its common law roots based on English Law. This era is also of importance as it led to the introduction of the present Extradition Act 67 of 1962. Finally the current position spanning from 1994 to the law as it stands in South Africa today, as influenced by the introduction of Constitutional law, is examined. The rule on non-inquiry is also examined in order to compare the traditional approach by states, where state sovereignty was of paramount importance, with the modern trend of emphasis being placed on fundamental human rights. The methods in terms of which extradition is accomplished, both in South Africa and internationally is also discussed. Such reference to the theory and nature of extradition is done to provide general background on the complex issue to be discussed. The crux of the treatise relates to the impact that the rise in status of fundamental human rights has had on the extradition process. Reference will be made to aspects relating to the protection of the offender’s procedural rights as well as to the protection of the individuals right to life, dignity and bodily integrity. Such examination will refer to the position in South African law as well as the position on the international front. Attention is given to developments in case law as well as to how the courts approach the tension between extradition and human rights both locally and internationally. Finally, in conclusion it is submitted that the extradition process is the most effective procedure available to return an offender to the state seeking his prosecution. The process has however, in modern times adapted to uphold the rights of the offender whose return is requested. This can be seen from the provisions included in recent treaties and conventions, most notably the European Convention on Extradition to which South Africa became a party in 2003. Extradition is clearly concerned with the balancing of the offender’s human rights and the need for effective enforcement of criminal law.

Value delivered by private game reserves in South Africa : a comparison of visitors' and managers' perceptionsTheron, Elizna January 2012 (has links)
The uniqueness of the wildlife and the luxurious nature of South African private game reserves could be seen as a valuable niche in the South African tourism market and for this reason make South Africa a desired destination. Due to complex visitor needs and demands regarding price, service, social connection, authenticity, quality or image, value perceptions will differ in terms of visitors’ experiences. If managers do not understand these value requirements, differences might exist between consumers’ and service providers’ perceptions of value. To maintain visitor satisfaction, loyalty and intention for return to the reserves, managers should continue to provide valued offerings and improve their visitors’ wildlife experience. This research investigated visitors’ perceptions of the value delivered by private game reserves in South Africa and compared these with reserve managers’ perceptions of the value delivered. The results of this research study could contribute to a better understanding of perceived value, which in turn could enhance the success of the private game reserves. The literature contextualised the South African private game reserve as part of wildlife tourism, the wildlife tourism offering and the characteristics of wildlife visitors. An overview of customer value, customer value models showing their development over time, and the conceptual framework of the current study was provided. The resulting conceptual model was used to evaluate managers’ and visitors’ perceptions of Quality, Monetary price, Behavioural price, Reputation, Emotional response, Social value and Novelty value delivered by South African private game reserves. The empirical data was collected by means of a survey, using two structured self-administered electronic questionnaires administered to the managers of, and the visitors to, private game reserves. One hundred and sixty two visitors and 30 managers participated in the survey. By performing exploratory factor analysis it was found that the seven value factors were consistent with the value dimensions reported in the literature. These were labelled as Quality, Emotional response, Monetary price, Reputation, Novelty value, Social value and Behavioural price. Most of managers’ perceptions of value provided exceeded visitors’ perceptions of value received. Both managers and visitors rated value items related to Emotional response highly. Considerably more managers (17 percent) thought that the reserve experience can be associated with good service, opposed to only 4 percent of visitors who perceived the service to be good. On the other hand, a larger proportion of visitors (29%) than the managers (20 percent) perceived the reserve experience as relaxing. Managers rated eleven of the thirteen game reserve attributes more positively than what the visitors did. Of these attributes, accommodation services, protection of the natural environment, game drives and service delivery, showed significant differences. It is recommended that South African private game reserve managers: • conduct market research to get a better understanding of what delights visitors. Research should be conducted on a regular basis to ensure management stays current with visitors’ changing needs; • determine whether the prices charged reflect the quality of the physical offerings, service delivery and the time and effort visitors spent to obtain the offering; • use the adventurous activities offered at the reserves as part of their promotional campaigns to attract adventure tourists; • train service delivery staff and game drive guides to educate visitors on the history, culture and eco-friendly practices related to their reserve; • always deliver superior service to ensure memorable wildlife experiences, value for money and exceed visitors’ expectations; • continue using websites, social media and magazines to inform the target market about the reserve offerings; and • stay in regular contact with visitors through social media, newsletters, blogs, follow up emails/calls or face to face discussions at the reserve.
