Methodist Central Halls as public sacred space

Connelly, Angela January 2011 (has links)
Few people know that the first sessions of the General Assembly of the UN in 1946 were held in a place of worship - Westminster Central Hall. It was part of an ambitious construction programme, initiated by the Wesleyan Methodists, which resulted in Central Halls in most British cities. They were, and in some cases still are, flexible, multi-functional spaces used on a daily basis for a wide range of purposes. They are widely perceived as public space but they are also sacred - camouflaged churches, created as sites for missionary activity and social outreach by a faith which from its origins has challenged the dichotomy between sacred and secular space. They have never been systematically studied – even their number and locations were unknown. This thesis tells their story by presenting them as an undocumented building type of social and cultural significance. It explores the concept of building type and the dimensions of social and cultural analysis that may be explored with the method. The typological approach is then demonstrated with a specific monographic focus on Methodist Central Halls from the 1880s to the present. Using a combination of visual methods, archival research and personal testimony, the analysis offers insights into the many aspects of Methodism through the long twentieth century – the church’s spatial distribution, its modes of mission and worship, its cultural identity and its business model. These centrally located assembly halls with their landmark architecture are for many towns still the top venues for meeting and entertainment. The typology of such public sacred spaces is not only a chapter in the history of British cities but provides findings of wide interest for religion and society.

Study about the poet João Cabral de Melo Neto through his book Morte e Vida Severina , written in 1954, which is a dramatic poem that approaches the tough life of the people from the Northeast Brazil and its social and historical aspects. In his literature, João Cabral mixes the historical moment to biographical elements in order to achieve an identity as a poet, he deals with images and facts, and consequently he can t consider poetry without History. Thus, the comprehension of João Cabral poetry depends on the comprehension of the historical moment, since the text dialogs constantly with concepts as culture and space. This research analyzes the connection between History and Literature, in order to show the poetry as a reflection of time and memory. This study uses a literary composition as its main source to investigate the Pernambuco society through the 50 s. Maybe this is the way to contribute to overcoming the ever-growing gap that separates the dream-like landscapes from daily life´s / A presente dissertação faz uma articulação da História com a Literatura, numa reflexão do ser e da cidade do Recife.

Pélyová, Paulína January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the diploma thesis is to define a specific phenomenon bound to the current consumer society, which by its expression considers certain values and relations to the material world as necessary or, on the contrary, unnecessary. At the same time, it examines the boundary between consumer goods that we use on a daily basis and the subjects that have become part of our personality. These findings are demonstrated on specific examples. Telecommunication progress and its impact on today's consumer society in all aspects of nowadays lifestyle has become the starting point for the diploma work. Phone as an artifact has become part of our life with an ever more personal approach. This phenomenon is grasped theoretically, creatively and as an opportunity for pedagogical activity and research. The pedagogical intention is not only suggested but also verified and reflected in praxis.

Silva, Letícia Siabra da 28 February 2013 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This work is intended to analyse poor citizens‟ experiences at applying their communication strategies in the city of Uberlândia. By analysing a documentary produced by the television chain Rede Vitoriosa , from its emission Linha Dura no seu bairro (the Portuguese for Linha Dura in your district), one managed to obtain a complete investigation that treats the relationship amongst the living experiences of poor citizens around the city, by integrating and providing new ways of communicating. It encompass a period between the decades of 1990 and 2010, and remarks the important evolution of the communication devices that took place alongside a growing interest towards television viewers, as far as their relationship with the daily life in the suburbs were concerned. The research, carried out from written and video resources, together with interviews, has provided a strategy aimed to understand the city of Uberlandia in the given period. The same research has also related the mobilization of the inhabitants throughout the urban background to the news production, consumption and broadcasting. Getting to realize how do citizens take part in this process has become such a challenge for the concerned research, in its intents to look into the manners the citizens create their own communication spaces and also take over existing ones, in order to constitute a communication field on an unequal background.
