ACCOUNTING FOR SPATIAL AUTOCORRELATION IN MODELING THE DISTRIBUTION OF WATER QUALITY VARIABLES

Miralha, Lorrayne 01 January 2018 (has links)
Several studies in hydrology have reported differences in outcomes between models in which spatial autocorrelation (SAC) is accounted for and those in which SAC is not. However, the capacity to predict the magnitude of such differences is still ambiguous. In this thesis, I hypothesized that SAC, inherently possessed by a response variable, influences spatial modeling outcomes. I selected ten watersheds in the USA and analyzed them to determine whether water quality variables with higher Moran’s I values undergo greater increases in the coefficient of determination (R²) and greater decreases in residual SAC (rSAC) after spatial modeling. I compared non-spatial ordinary least squares to two spatial regression approaches, namely, spatial lag and error models. The predictors were the principal components of topographic, land cover, and soil group variables. The results revealed that water quality variables with higher inherent SAC showed more substantial increases in R² and decreases in rSAC after performing spatial regressions. In this study, I found a generally linear relationship between the spatial model outcomes (R² and rSAC) and the degree of SAC in each water quality variable. I suggest that the inherent level of SAC in response variables can predict improvements in models before spatial regression is performed. The benefits of this study go beyond modeling selection and performance, it has the potential to uncover hydrologic connectivity patterns that can serve as insights to water quality managers and policy makers.

Kriminalitetens geografi : vardagsbrottslighetens spatiala fördelning i Borlänge

Axelsson, Henrik January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to describe and analyze the geographical distribution of everyday criminality in the town of Borlänge during the year 2002 and to analyze which measures to be taken in the physical social planning to decrease this everyday criminality there. The term everyday criminality is here to be understood as those categories of crime that appear most frequently in the records of reports to the police every year. Here two kinds of crime have been in focus, thefts from cars and office burglary. In fulfilling this aim two main questions have been answered. The first one is how the everyday criminality was distributed geographically in the town of Borlänge during the year 2002. The second one is which measures to be taken in the physical social planning to decrease this everyday criminality in the town of Borlänge. In order to answer the first question a spatial autocorrelation analysis, Local Moran LISA has been used. This method is based on the measurement Moran´s I and shows the spatial autocorrelation for every single location. To answer the second question three different theories of crime prevention through environmental design have been studied and applied in the analysis. These are Jane Jacobs’ ideas about ”the living city”, Oscar Newman´s ideas about ”defensible space” and Ronald V. Clarke´s theories about crime prevention. The major conclusions that can be drawn from this thesis are that the risk of being exposed to thefts from cars, during the analyzed time period, was highest in Centrum and Hagalund and their surroundings. The lowest risk of being exposed to this type of crime was found in Domnarvet and Islingby, during the year 2002. The highest risk of being a victim of the crime office burglary was found in Hagalund and its surroundings and in the single area of Kvarnsveden. The corresponding lowest risk was found in Lergärdet and its surroundings and in Norra Backa and Kupolen. The measures that should be taken in order to decrease these types of criminality can be divided into overall changes and place-specific changes. When it comes to the crime thefts from cars a more attractive central business district, a better view of parking lots from nearby buildings, dividing of larger parking lot zones into smaller ones, migration of hidden parking lots and stronger access control to parking lots where problems with this kind of crime have occurred have been suggested as overall changes. The corresponding place-specific changes are to remove vegetation that is blocking the view, better lighting and to put up signs with information about increased risk of exposure to crime at parking lots with the most problems. To decrease the amount of office burglaries overall changes as to create a better view of the area from nearby surroundings, move bigger office compartments or divide them into smaller units, rebuild characteristic buildings and increase security by strengthening the access control to offices with these kinds of problems could be useful. Finally there are possibilities to decrease office burglary by using place-specific measures as surveillance cameras combined with signs containing information about these, high fences and better lighting around the buildings where a higher risk of being exposed to this kind of criminality is present.

THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN POLYPLOIDY AND CLONALITY IN THE HERBACEOUS PLANT, CHAMERION ANGUSTIFOLIUM (ONAGRACEAE)

Baldwin, Sarah J 14 May 2012 (has links)
The co-occurrence of polyploidy and clonal reproduction among plant species has long been recognized, but the evolutionary mechanisms underlying the association are unknown. Here, I investigate whether polyploidy increases the magnitude of clonality, either directly or indirectly, by comparing the extent and spatial structure of clones between diploid and tetraploid Chamerion angustifolium in a greenhouse environment and natural populations. In the greenhouse, tetraploid plants allocated 90.4% more dry mass to root buds, the primary mechanism of clonal reproduction, than diploids. Per unit root mass, tetraploids produced 44% fewer root buds and the average position of the root buds along the root was 47% closer to the stem than in diploids. In natural populations, the magnitude of clonality in tetraploid C. angustifolium was similar or less than in diploids. However, clones were spatially aggregated in all diploid populations but only in two of five tetraploid populations. Average clone patch diameter, however, was not significantly different between diploids (3.9 m) and tetraploids (2.5 m). These data do not support the hypothesis that clonality increases as a result of genome duplication. Rather, it is possible that clonality is linked to genome duplication because clonal diploids are predisposed for polyploid formation and establishment. / National Science and Engineering Research Council, Canada Research Chair Program, Canadian Foundation for Innovation

The reexamination of the impact of metro system on residential housing values in Taipei metropolitan

Unknown Date (has links)
Many previous studies have showed that metro system has a positive impact on the property values due to its accessibility benefits and the effect should decline as distance increases. While the pattern of the change and its difference between stations located in different locations has yet not been fully discussed, most of the studies failed to allow for spatial autocorrelation over space. This research uses spatial econometrics to estimate a residential housing model that considers spatial autocorrelation. The empirical results show the difference in the price effect of metro stations between urban and suburban areas does exist. The effect tends to get stronger in certain area, the closer the property lies within to the suburban area the greater the effect is. Also, we find price gaps between different metro station categories. Generally, underground stations and transfer stations have greater positive effect on residential property values.

Multi-scale effects of hydrological and landscape variables on macrophyte richness and composition in British lakes

Sun, Junyao January 2016 (has links)
Macrophytes are an integral component of lake littoral zones and play an irreplaceable role in maintaining the ecological balance of wetlands. Recent research has highlighted the role of lake-scale environmental factors (or “filters”) and catchment- and/or landscape-scale processes in explaining variation in macrophyte communities across different scales. In this work, the effects of land-use and connectivity on macrophyte communities were explored at two contrasting spatial scales (i.e. local catchment scale and topographic catchment scale). At the local catchment scale, the results revealed strong scale-dependency. The effects of land use on macrophyte richness were most apparent at fine spatial scales (within 0.5 to 1 km) and significantly outweighed the importance of hydrology. In terms of growth form composition, the effects of hydrological connectivity were stronger than those of land use, with the greatest effect observed at an intermediate distance (~ 5 km) from the lake. The study on the hydrologically-connected lake pairs indicated that environmental filters were more influential in explaining species turnover than lake connectivity. Interestingly, geographical connectivity explained more of the variability in species turnover than hydrological connectivity. Moreover, the relative importance of environmental filters and lake connectivity to species turnover was very sensitive to the degree of human disturbance. The multi-scale interaction analyses indicated the effect of lake alkalinity on macrophyte composition is strongly influenced by catchment scale variables including hydrological features and land use intensity. The turnover in macrophyte composition in response to variability in alkalinity was stronger in catchments with low lake and stream density and weaker in catchments with a more highly developed hydrological network. Lake abiotic variables were found to have more influence on macrophyte composition in lowland catchments with a higher intensity of human disturbance. Moreover, the catchment-scale factors promoting the establishment of different communities were found to vary between catchments depending on lake type, the degree of environmental heterogeneity and hydrological connectivity.

Conchopata: urbanism, craft production and interregional interaction in the Middle Horizon / Conchopata: urbanismo, producción artesanal e interacción interregional en el Horizonte Medio

Tschauner, Hartmut, Isbell, William H. 10 April 2018 (has links) (PDF)
This chapter reexamines ceramic production, and other possibly specialized activities, at Conchopata, a recently excavated Middle Horizon urban center in the Ayacucho Valley. Drawing on the exhaustive GIS database compiled by the Conchopata Project, we employ normalized choropleth maps and localized spatial autocorrelation statistics to examine the distributions of four categories of ceramic production implements — ceramic molds, polishers, scrapers, and pulidores — and contrast them with the distributions of artifacts related to lithic manufacturing. We find high concentrations of artifacts suggestive of both types of production to coincide with each other and to correlate with high concentrations of other kinds of materials, such as botanical remains and animal bones. Consequently, areas of the site with high densities of ceramic manufacturing tools are unlikely tohave been ceramic workshops, but more plausibly trash concentrations containing all manner of remains in high densities. Indiscriminate dumping of refuse stemming from various craft production activities as well as domestic waste is indicative of non-specialized discard behavior and, by inference, of non-specialized, domestic production. The fancy ceramics whose spread across much of the Central Andes constitutes the defining feature of the Middle Horizon do not appear to have been manufactured in a V. Gordon Childe-style urban setting associated with spatially differentiated and class-structured economic interdependency. It is unlikely that they imply the spread of this kind of urbanism during the Middle Horizon, and new, Andean models of Wari political organization, craft production, and interregional interaction must be explored by archaeologists.

The choice of appropriate governmental instances for managing different resources and public policies is the subject of extensive and historical discussion. Assuming that a country’s population enjoys and exercises free movement within its territory, being able to migrate and settle in new localities, it is argued that, according to the specificities of each policy, the central or local levels of governments would be better managers / allocators and would ensure the maximization of utility of taxpayers. The present essay seeks to analyze this phenomenon using the Brazilian housing policy as an indicator. In 2009, through the establishment of the Minha Casa Minha Vida Program, the policy got partially back to federal government control since the end of BNH (National Housing Bank) in 1986 what raised the valid question of assessing if the increase of federal centralization brought efficiency gains on the allocation of resources. The literature and articles on the subject present theory and evidence that local management of social housing policies can cause population spillover among neighboring municipalities arising from Welfare Migration. This could establish a strategic game of municipal managers to reduce the provision of social housing when they assume the migration actually takes place (Mattos et al., 2014), the so-called Race to the Bottom. This study investigates if after 2009, with the increase of centralization in the policy decision making, it is still possible to verify this game, and seeks to find evidence that housing policy would be a potential cause of population movements through a labor spillover analysis. Using a panel with annualized data from 2009 to 2014 applied to spatial autocorrelation models, it was observed that in the national average there is still evidence of a strategic intermunicipal game in the allocation of housing policy resources. However, when analyzing the quantitative evolution of the Program indicators it is suggested that the policy centralization reversed the panorama from Race to the Bottom to one of Yardstick Competition, what is a significant gain of efficiency when compared with the previous local politics. The results also suggest that there is indeed evidence of a statistically significant correlation between housing policy investments with labor movements which, in turn, could be related to the Welfare Migration theory.

Estrutura espacial da assembleia de cupins (Isoptera) em uma área de cerrado sensu stricto do Parque Estadual da Serra de Caldas Novas, Goiás / Spatial structure of the termites assemblage (Isoptera) in an area of cerrado sensu stricto in the Serra de Caldas Novas State Park, Goiás State

OLIVEIRA, Danilo Elias de 30 January 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-07-29T16:21:15Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 DISSERTACAO DANILO E OLIVEIRA.pdf: 948232 bytes, checksum: abfb2cc1c3f80adf6f86dc733c764552 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-01-30 / One of the major community ecology's objectives is to understand the factors that determine the spatial distribution of populations of different species belonging to an assembly. Works that investigate these causal factors on the termite fauna are rare, and to the Cerrado region, non-existent. This work aims to 1) describe the spatial structure of the termite assembly in a cerrado sensu stricto area, 2) verify whether there is spatial autocorrelation in the composition of termites and 3) whether the species are distributed on a checkerboard, and if so, what cause this distribution. On the plateau of Parque Estadual da Serra de Caldas Novas (PESCAN), I sampled the termites on 123 10m2 plots with distances to each other varying from 5 m to 3.5 km. This plots were divided into two sets, One of those arranged into 3 transects of 28 plots each and the other arranged into 13 triads distant 1 km to the next. I Identified the species and grouped them into food guilds. I made a Mantel s autocorrelogram with 10 distance classes to assess the changes in the similarity of the composition in function of space. I compared the C-score index, using the entire assembly and each guild alone, with a null distribution (with 5000 randomizations) to check whether there is a checkerboard distribution in the assembly and what its cause. I found 579 colonies of 57 species of termites, most of which was humivorous. There was no significant spatial autocorrelation in any distance class concerning the species composition because the values of r of Mantel for all distance classes were close to zero and not significant. The C-score was significant for the assembly as a whole (C-score = 52.01, p = 0.006), but was not significant for any of the guilds. The cerrado of PESCAN is one of the areas with the highest species diversity already registered for the Cerrado biome and possibly this is because of the well preserved condition of the park and the sampling effort employed. The absence of spatial autocorrelation indicates that the species of termites are distributed in space regardless of the distribution of others. This is the first study that shows that the assembly of termites is distributed on a checkerboard and that this is due to historical events of dispersal and colonization. In the area I studied, probably the dispersion of the allates during flight events makes the establishment of future colonies in a field forming a "scrambled" and not superimposed distribution known as checkerboard distribution. These results contradict the recurrent idea that intra and interspecific competition is the causal factor of the colonies spatial distribution of termites.

Epidemiologia da dengue na cidade de Rio Branco - Acre, Brasil, no período de 2000 a 2007 / Epidemiology of dengue in the city of Rio Branco- Acre, Brazil, from 2000 to 2007

Ricardo da Costa Rocha 19 September 2011 (has links)
O uso da análise espa- cial evidenciou que a distribuição da incidência de dengue entre os bairros da cidade ocorre de maneira aleatória / Objective - Characterize the ocurring of dengue in the city of Rio Branco, Acre, during the period 2000 to 2007, in time and space, and according to the infestation of Aedes Aegypti and the demographic, social-economical, environmental and climatical variables. Methods - a description of dengue incidence (CI) and the house infestation by Aedes aegypti (HI) was made in the period of 2000 to 2007 from secondary data. The distribution of cases was described according to gender, age and education. The Incidence Coefficient of incidence and the House Index Infestation were tested to measure their correlations with demographic, environmental and socioeconomic climatic variables. The geoprocessing technique was applied with the use of Global and Local Moran (LISA) spatial statistics to evaluate spatial autocorrelation of incidence of dengue among the urban localities in the city. Results - The epidemiology of dengue in the city is characterized by high incidence and severe infestation of Aedes aegypti. Theres no difference between the incidence of dengue on men and women and the most affected age group comprises young adults from the age of 15 to 49 years old and students who have not completed high school. The distribution of the disease shows a seasonal pattern with increased incidence in rainy periods and regression in dry periods. The increase of dengue cases and the building infestation showed significant association (p <0.05) with the populated districts, where there are many buildings and high building infestation. The increase in occurrence was found significant in areas with low public water supply. The Quality of Life Index (QLI) showed no significant correlation with the occurrence of dengue, however, the infestation rate was higher in districts with better QLI. Global and Local Moran (LISA) statistics showed weak spatial dependence (p <0.05) of the incidence of dengue among neighborhoods. Conclusion - The epidemiological analysis of dengue in the city allowed the visualization of the factors that are related to the transmission of dengue and the proliferation of Aedes aegypti that can be assessed in the formulation of more effective strategies to achieve better control of the disease. The use of the spatial analysis revealed the randomness of dengue incidence distribution among the neighborhoods of the city
