A fast neutron spectrometer

A fast neutron spectrometer was designed and constructed using a proton-recoil telescope. Recoil protons from a thin foil of polyethylene were detected with a silicon surface-barrier diode. The output pulse from the detector is proportional to the energy of the protons and hence the energy of the incident neutrons. The spectrometer was used to obtain pulse height spectra from various sources of fast neutrons including the V.P.I. reactor and the d-d reaction using the Cockroft-Walton accelerator. Results obtained indicate that for high intensity sources the spectrometer is capable of providing high resolution energy spectra although modification is necessary in some cases to reduce background. The compactness of the instrument and its simplicity make it ideal for investigating sources that are not readily amenable to other techniques. / Master of Science

Positive and negative pion elastic scattering on [58]Ni, [60]Ni, and [64]Ni at 50 MeV and 65 MeV

Elastic scattering data was successfully taken using the new "Clamshell" spectrometer. Angular distributions of elastic differential cross sections were obtained at 50 MeV and 65 MeV using positive and negative pions scattered from ⁵⁶Ni, ⁶⁰Ni, and ⁶⁴Ni. The data were compared to predictions made using the MSU optical potential, The π⁺ data agreed fairly well with the predictions at both 50 MeV and 65 MeV while the corresponding π⁻ data significantly disagreed with the predictions. The absorption parameters in the MSU potential were varied in an attempt to fit the data. A suitable fit was achieved for both π⁺ and π⁻ data at 50 MeV and 65 MeV. The real part of the p-wave absorption parameter was well determined but showed two distinct values for π⁺ and π⁻ indicating that there is a separate potential for π⁺ and π⁻ or that the absorption part of the potential is inadequately formulated. / Ph. Performance Characterization Of A Cylindrical Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer

The cylindrical ion trap (CIT) is made up of two planar endcap electrodes and a cylindrical ring electrode. The investigation of simpler geometries like CIT has been started off in recent years with a view towards miniaturization. As a step towards this, numerical studies on CITs were carried out in our laboratory. Here in this study, our motive is to characterize a CIT through experiments. We have designed a mass spectrometer where a CIT is used as the mass analyzer. The trap performance was observed by varying six parameters associated with our experiment. The parameters are (1) the ionization voltage, (2) the ramp time, (3) the ionization time, (4) the cooling time, (5) the dead time and (6) the bias voltage applied across the filaments. All the experiments have been performed in the mass selective boundary ejection mode.

A Tunable Snapshot Imaging Spectrometer

A tunable snapshot imaging spectrometer has been demonstrated. A liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LC SLM) has been integrated into a computed tomographic imaging spectrometer (CTIS) to achieve tunability. The LC SLM allows for rapid, programmable, and non-mechanical alteration of its phase profile by the application of appropriate voltages to its transparent electrodes.The goal of this dissertation is twofold: (1) to integrate a liquid crystal spatial light modulator into a CTIS instrument and characterize its performance as a tunable CTIS disperser, and (2) to implement tunability by analyzing different CTIS configurations.The theoretical model of CTIS operation, calibration, reconstruction, and disperser design are covered in detail. The cross talk of the LC SLM forces the use of a feedback design algorithm rather than designing the desired phase profile a priori in the computer. The modifications to the current polychromatic linear inversion technique for use with the LC SLM in feedback are presented. The result of the modifications is the successful integration of a reprogrammable (i.e. tunable) disperser for the CTIS instrument.The implementation of tunability is explored by analyzing the spectral resolution of a reconstructed point source for different disperser configurations. A method for experimentally determining the CTIS spectral resolution is presented.

Advancements in Kinetic Inductance Detector, Spectrometer, and Amplifier Technologies for Millimeter-Wave Astronomy

abstract: The inductance of a conductor expresses its tendency to oppose a change in current flowing through it. For superconductors, in addition to the familiar magnetic inductance due to energy stored in the magnetic field generated by this current, kinetic inductance due to inertia of charge carriers is a significant and often dominant contribution to total inductance. Devices based on modifying the kinetic inductance of thin film superconductors have widespread application to millimeter-wave astronomy. Lithographically patterning such a film into a high quality factor resonator produces a high sensitivity photodetector known as a kinetic inductance detector (KID), which is sensitive to frequencies above the superconducting energy gap of the chosen material. Inherently multiplexable in the frequency domain and relatively simple to fabricate, KIDs pave the way to the large format focal plane array instruments necessary to conduct the next generation of cosmic microwave background (CMB), star formation, and galaxy evolution studies. In addition, non-linear kinetic inductance can be exploited to develop traveling wave kinetic inductance parametric amplifiers (TKIPs) based on superconducting delay lines to read out these instruments. I present my contributions to both large and small scale collaborative efforts to develop KID arrays, spectrometers integrated with KIDs, and TKIPs. I optimize a dual polarization TiN KID absorber for the next generation Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope for Polarimetry, which is designed to investigate the role magnetic fields play in star formation. As part of an effort to demonstrate aluminum KIDs on sky for CMB polarimetry, I fabricate devices for three design variants. SuperSpec and WSpec are respectively the on-chip and waveguide implementations of a filter bank spectrometer concept designed for survey spectroscopy of high redshift galaxies. I provide a robust tool for characterizing the performance of all SuperSpec devices and demonstrate basic functionality of the first WSpec prototype. As part of an effort to develop the first W-Band (75-110 GHz) TKIP, I construct a cryogenic waveguide feedthrough, which enhances the Astronomical Instrumentation Laboratory’s capability to test W-Band devices in general. Electronics Instrumentation For Ion Trap Mass Spectrometers

The thesis aims at building an experimental setup for conducting the boundary ejection and resonance ejection experiments on wide variety of ion trap mass analyzers. The experimental setup has two parts namely power electronics circuits and mechanical assembly. The focus of the thesis is on the electronics hardware which provides various power sources required for the operation of ion trap mass spectrometer. The electronics circuits discussed in the thesis have better performance, flexibility and ruggedness compared to the existing setup. The traditional power supplies used in ion trap mass spectrometers are all linear supplies. But one major drawback of these supplies is the high power dissipation and consequently, the power efficiency degrades. We are trying to introduce switch mode power supplies to reduce the power dissipation loss and eventually increase the power efficiency. In the course of the work the following power supplies have been developed. The supplies are - 1.Constant current source, 2.Filament base, 3.gating power supply and pulsing circuit, 4.High voltage DC power supply and 5. High voltage RF generator.

Study and test of micro-channel plates used in the dual ion spectrometer of the MMS mission by NASA

The Magnetospheric Multiscale mission led by NASA has been designed to study the micro-physics of Magnetic Reconnection in Earth's magnetosphere by using four identical spacecrafts with instruments with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Among these instruments are the Dual Ion Spectrometers (DIS) engineered to measure the 3D distribution of ion flux in space. The detector assembly of the DIS consists of Micro-Channel Plates (MCP) mounted in Chevron configuration. Centre d'Etude Spatiale des Rayonnements (CESR), Toulouse is responsible for the provision and testing of all fifty MCP pairs for this mission. The goal of the work was to participate in the testing and characterization of the first prototype of the MCPs. It was achieved by understanding the working and characteristics of the MCPs in general and getting familiar with the detector assembly of the DIS i.e. the MCP pair and the detector circuit board in particular. To perform the testing, it was necessary to understand the testing system as well. These topics are described in this report along with the testing procedure and the data analysis. The testing procedure was developed eventually after facing several problems during the testing. MCP pair characteristics like pulse height distributions, gain, resistance and the MCP operating voltages for the mission were determined on analyzing the data. L'expérience AMS-02 est un détecteur de particules installé sur la station spatiale internationale (ISS) depuis mai 2011, date à partir de laquelle il mesure les caractéristiques des rayons cosmiques afin d'apporter des réponses aux problématiques soulevées par la physique des astroparticules depuis quelques décennies, en particulier l'étude indirecte de la matière sombre et la recherche d'antimatière. Les aspects phénoménologiques de la physique des rayons cosmiques sont revus dans la première partie. Une deuxième décrit les performances en vol des différents sous-détecteurs d'AMS-02, en particulier du calorimètre électromagnétique. Il est montré, en utilisant les particules au minimum d'ionisation (MIPs), qui constituent l'essentiel du rayonnement cosmique, que le calorimètre fonctionne comme prévu, et que l'on retrouve les mêmes performances qu'au sol. Cette étude est utilisée pour suivre au cours du temps l'évolution des performances du détecteur. Elle permet également de développer un estimateur de charge pour les noyaux utilisant le calorimètre. Une troisième et dernière partie s'attache enfin à déterminer le rapport positronique. La principale difficulté de cette mesure est d'identifier les positons en rejetant les protons grâce aux caractéristiques des gerbes dans la calorimètre. Après avoir défini des variables pertinentes pour cette séparation, nous construisons un estimateur via une analyse multivariée, en nous appuyant sur des simulations Monte-Carlo d'électrons pour les plus hautes énergies. Au-delà de 100 GeV, nous obtenons un taux de réjection de l'ordre de 10 000 pour 90% d'efficacité. Après avoir estimé la confusion de charge, cet estimateur nous permet finalement, de déterminer le rapport positronique pour les données acquises pendant les 18 premiers mois et pour des énergies allant de 1.5 à 350 GeV. / The AMS-02 experiment is a particle detector installed on the International Space Station (ISS) since May 2011, which measures the characteristics of the cosmic rays to bring answers to the problematics risen by the astroparticle physics since a few decades, in particular the study of dark matter and the search of antimatter. The phenomenological aspects of the physics of cosmic rays are reviewed in a first part. A second one describes the in-flight performances of the different subdetectors of AMS-02, in particular the electromagnetic calorimeter. It is shown, using particles at the ionizing minimum (MIPs), accounting for the main part of cosmic rays, that the calorimeter works as expected, and we find the same performances as on ground. This study is used to follow in time the evolution of the detector performances. It also allows to develop a charge estimator for the nuclei using the calorimeter. A third and final part, deals with the determination of the positronic fraction. The main difficulty of this measurement is to identify the positrons by rejecting the protons thanks to the characteristics of the showers in the calorimeter. After having defined variables relevant for this separation, we build an estimator using a multivariate analysis and Monte-Carlo simulations of electrons for the higher energies. Above 100 GeV, we obtain a rejection factor of about 10 000 at a 90% efficiency. After having estimated the charge confusion, this estimator, finally, allows us to determine the positronic ratio for the first 18 months of data and energies ranging from 1.5 to 350 GeV.

Recursos técnicos e científicos passaram então, a serem aplicados em busca da melhoria na produção dos cultivos,principalmente mediante o uso de fertilizantes e praguicidas. Com isso, a sociedade se deparou com problemas de ordem de equilíbrio ambiental e saúde pública, pois devido à contínua diversificação dos fitoparasitas, surgem, a todo momento, reduções do período de tempo entre aplicações consecutivas, e mais importante talvez, usos de doses mais altas e emprego simultâneo de diferentes pesticidas, por parte dos agricultores, objetivando complementar ações específicas ou alcançar efeitos sinérgicos para maiores rendimentos na produção. Tal situação traz como conseqüência óbvia e direta, o aumento, inaceitável, dos riscos de contaminação do meio ambiente com resíduos químicos de defensívos da área agropecuarista prejudiciais à saúde, o que leva a inúmeros problemas relativos à segurança alimentar dos produtos consumidos, e à uma preocupação de âmbito nacional evidenciada pela criação do Programa de Análise de Resíduos de Agrotóxicos em alimentos (PARA) da ANVISA. O aumento na necessidade de detecção e quantificação destes compostos, acarretou o desenvolvimento de pesquisas no setor, a fim de atingir uma melhoria na eficiência,qualidade e rapidez de resposta nas análises. A possibilidade do estudo de não apenas um de cada vez, mas de até 300 compostos sendo extraídos, detectados e quantificados simultâneamente se tornou a saída mais viável, tanto qualitativa quanto economicamente, facilitando o monitoramento contínuo do fornecimento de produtos do setor alimentício pelos chamados métodos multiresíduos. O presentre trabalho teve como princípio a validação de um método multiresíduo para análise de 14 analitos usando uma técnica de alto poder de concentração e limpeza do extrato como o GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography) e detecção e quantificação por GC-MS/MS e LC-MS/MS. Os pesticidas investigados englobam classes como: acaricidas, inseticidas, fungicidas, nematicidas e formicidas de aplicação foliar, em sementes ou em solo, sendo que o acefato, metamidofós, acetamiprido e o thiamethoxan foram extraídos de amostras de batata e feijão e analisados por LC-MS/MS e a azoxistrobina, bifentrina, carbofuran, chlorotalonil, clorpirifós, clorfenapir, etofenprox, famoxadone,metalaxil, procimidone e o tebuconazole em amostras de batata e tomate e analisados por GCMS/MS. Os limites de detecção (LD) encontrados variaram de 0,06 a 2,89µg/L, e os coeficientes de variação (CV), de 0,036 a 2,036%. As recuperações foram determinadas em cada tipo de amostras, e os valores encontrados estavam entre 93,34% e 109,67%. Nenhuma das matrizes utilizadas apresentaram resultados insatisfatórios e o método utilizado mostrouse robusto e de fácil aplicação para todos os analitos testados / Abstract: The growing population worldwide, has required a great effort on the part of agriculture to increase each year, the production of food to meet the needs of external and internal market of Brazil. Technical and scientific resources spent then, to be applied in pursuit of improved crop production, mainly through the use of fertilizers and pesticides.With this, the company encountered problems in the balance of environmental and public health, since due to the continuous diversification of plant parasites, arise at any moment,reductions in the time period between consecutive applications, and perhaps most important,uses more doses high and simultaneous use of different pesticides by farmers, aiming to complete specific actions or to achieve synergistic effects in producing higher yields. This situation brings obvious and direct consequence, the increase unacceptable risk of environmental contamination with chemical residues from pesticides in farms are harmful to health, which leads to numerous problems relating to food safety of the products consumed, and to a concern nationwide evidenced by the creation of the Program Analysis of Pesticide Residues in Food (TO) of ANVISA. The increase in the necessity for detection and quantification of these compounds, led the development of research in the sector in order to achieve an improvement in efficiency, quality and responsiveness in the analyzes. The possibility of studying not just one at a time, but up to 300 compounds being extracted,detected and quantified simultaneously output became more viable, both qualitatively and economically, facilitating continuous monitoring of the supply of products by the food industry called methods multiresidue. The principle presentre work was the validation of a multiresidue method for analysis of 14 analytes using a technique of high power concentration and cleanup of the extract as GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography) and detection and quantification by GC-MS/MS and LC- MS / MS. The pesticides investigated include classes such as acaricides, insecticides, fungicides, insecticides and nematicides foliar, seed or soil,and acephate, methamidophos, and Acetamiprid thiamethoxan were extracted from samples of potatoes and beans and analyzed by LC-MS / MS and azoxystrobin, bifenthrin, carbofuran,chlorothalonil, chlorpyrifos, chlorfenapyr, etofenprox, famoxadone, metalaxyl, procymidone and tebuconazole in samples of potato and tomato and analyzed by GC-MS/MS. The limits of detection (LOD) ranged from 0.06 to 2.89 mg / L, and the coefficients of variation (CV), 0.036 to 2.036%. The recoveries were determined for each type of samples, and the values were between 93.34% and 109.67%.
