Persistence of difference : a history of Cornish wrestling

The aim of this study was to provide an historical analysis of Cornish wrestling and in particular to address the following key questions: How has Cornish wrestling developed as a sport? Why is Cornish wrestling ‘different’? Why has Cornish wrestling survived? It was argued that in order to provide an adequate historical analysis it was necessary to locate the sport within an appropriate and relevant conceptual framework. Two fields of enquiry were identified as having the potential to provide this; mainstream British sport history and the ‘new Cornish Studies’. The main ideas and debates that form the basis for these two areas were reviewed and it was argued that British sport history offered only a partial interpretation for the history of Cornish wrestling as the evidence suggests it is different from other sports. It was further argued that with its emphasis upon ‘difference’ the ‘new Cornish Studies’ in general and Payton’s ‘centre-periphery model’ in particular offers a more appropriate conceptual framework, which is also rooted in a relevant local context. Payton developed his model to answer a number of questions relating to Cornwall’s distinctiveness: Why is Cornwall ‘different’? Why has this persisted? Why is there a strong sense of ‘Cornishness’ and separate identity which has survived until today? He concluded that Cornwall’s ‘difference’ has persisted because of its historical experience, which in each period has been distinct from other areas of Britain and has led directly to a unique identity. In Payton’s model, the privileged ‘centre’, which is the location of power and influence, is based largely in London and the south-east of England; whereas the ‘periphery’ is geographically remote from the ‘centre’, but dependent upon it. Payton proposed three phases of peripherality: ‘First’ or ‘Older Peripheralism’, characterised by geographical and cultural isolation from the centre; ‘Second Peripheralism’, which recognises the central importance of industrial change, producing economic and social marginality and ‘Third Peripheralism’ characterised by a ‘branch-factory’ economy promoting a process of ‘counter-urbanisation’. The structure of the thesis follows the phases of peripherality and argues the evidence is consistent with Payton’s ‘centre-periphery model’. The evidence also demonstrates that Cornish wrestling is ‘different’ and that ‘difference’ has persisted over time because of Cornwall’s historical experience, which in each period of peripherality has been distinct. Furthermore, throughout the entire period of the study, Cornish wrestling has been, and still remains, an important icon of Cornishness, which has ensured its survival.

O ciclismo é uma das práticas esportivas que foi organizada em associações em Porto Alegre na segunda metade do século XIX. O presente estudo tem como objetivo reconstruir as memórias da prática do ciclismo em clubes da cidade de Porto Alegre, desde a segunda metade do século XIX até meados da década de 1940. Para a construção dessa pesquisa, as fontes documentais consultadas foram os jornais “A Federação” e o “Correio do Povo”. As fontes revelaram que a prática do ciclismo em clubes na cidade de Porto Alegre, iniciou em 1895, com a fundação da União Velocipédica de Amadores, primeira associação destinada ao desenvolvimento dessa prática esportiva. No ano seguinte, em 1896, foi fundada a Radfahrer Verein Blitz. Essas duas associações rivalizaram nas competições de ciclismo nas pistas, mas também fora delas. No princípio do século XX, com a organização dos primeiros clubes de futebol em Porto Alegre, a prática do ciclismo sofreu um abalo, também em razão da migração de dirigentes esportivos para os clubes de futebol. Após um período de enfraquecimento do ciclismo nos clubes, nos anos de 1930, a prática foi retomada com certo destaque nos jornais. Um acontecimento marcante no período foi a organização da Federação Gaúcha de Ciclismo, em 1935. A década de 1940 mostra um novo período de declínio para o ciclismo, onde a divulgação dessa prática esportiva se torna escassa nas fontes consultadas. Atualmente, o ciclismo está retornando ao cotidiano da cidade de Porto Alegre, não como uma prática esportiva competitiva, mas como uma atividade de lazer ou como meio de transporte. / Cycling is a pratices sports that was organized in associations in Porto Alegre in the second half of the 19th century. After a period of weakening of cycling in clubs, in the years of 1930, the practice was resumed with a certain emphasis in the papers. A landmark event in the period was the organization of Federação Gaúcha de Ciclismo, in 1935. The Decade of 1940 shows a new period of decline for cycling, where disclosure of sports becomes scarce in the sources consulted. Currently, cycling is returning to everyday life in the city of Porto Alegre, not as a competitive sport, but as a leisure activity or as a means of transportation.

An investigation into motorsport sponsorship : a comparative analysis of two and four wheeled sponsorship

The prime objective of the research is to establish why commercial sponsors use motor sport as an element of their marketing communications. A comparison has been undertaken between car and bike racing, as represented by Formula One and MotoGp, to establish any differences in approach. The initial historical element of the research revealed that motor sport had been sponsored by vehicle manufacturers since the origins of the petrol combustion engine in the late 19th century. Any suggestion that sponsorship of motor sport is a recent, late 20th century science has been dispelled. The investigation found that the sponsors of top level car racing place major importance on achieving awareness for their brands through media exposure, particularly television. This aim is shared by motorcycle racing sponsors too and a common model is identified. Where motor cycle racing is specifically concerned the research established that there is an almost identical approach to the usage and application of sponsorship to that in car racing. The only difference being that the wider commercialisation of F1, in which brands outside those intimately involved with automotive industries have made use of motor sport sponsorship, has been around for longer than that in motorcycle racing. The motorcycle sponsors have therefore taken slightly longer to reach the same level of marketing sophistication in a sport which is recognized as having less money overall. The research reveals that the most important element of the business plan for both types of motor sport relies largely on a business model linked to global television audiences. Such audiences are seen as vital in generating awareness of sponsors and their products. Such plans provide an entirely relevant platform for the initial steps of the AIDA theory (Awareness; Interest; Desire; Action) of product adoption. The research also identifies that this commonality of approach is not entirely accidental as similar promoters have been involved at the top level of both sports. The research advises that the future of motor sport should continue to involve the application of the latest technologies appropriate to passenger vehicles if it is to continue unhindered. It is suggested that motor sport should become the definitive technological test bed for vehicle propulsion systems that are sustainable and kind to the environment.

Buscou-se compreender a introdução do rúgbi na cidade num período caracterizado pelo desenvolvimento das práticas esportivas ditas modernas numa sociedade em constante transformação, na qual o esporte desempenhava papel importante na modernização da vida urbana. The history of global rugby, from its origins to the intense disputes of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, was also analysed through its internal struggles - professionalism versus amateurism, massification and spectacularisation - being understood, in dialogue, with similar disputes occurring within local football in São Paulo.
